Y’all need to stop commenting on fics like the author is dead or something. The author sees those comments bro it’s like saying to someone’s face “sorry to hear about your passing. The only reason I’m sad about it is bc you won’t be making me any more sandwiches for free” like can you see how that might be insensitive? So what if they haven’t made a sandwhich in a month or a year or five. It’s not your place to announce their death lmao

This is in the post replies but I’m reposting it here bc I want more people to see this and realize
I think my biggest issue with these comments isn’t that I get them (my policy is to either ignore them or just be rude back) but that other authors might ONLY get them and I feel upset and offended on their behalf.
I have a big reader base and so these comments are few and far in between (though I still do feel bad whenever I get them. I can have a hundred good amazing comments that make me feel so happy about my writing, but then I‘ll get one singular comment that’s only demanding and rude and it’s like it wipes away all the good feelings I just had from the hundred good comments. It’s horrible.)
But I also remember when I was starting out, and I know comments like this could have decided whether I would keep writing or quit. And I know there are authors out there who have stopped writing entirely because all they got were those comments demanding updates from them. I know because I’ve meet them, several of them. People who once loved writing and creating but can’t do it anymore bc they had the love for it sucked out of them. And it makes me sad, because we could have had so many more amazing stories from skilled authors who are willing to share their work, but we don’t because they got those comments and it led to them giving up. It’s a tragedy.
It just infuriates me. So this is a topic i feel very passionate about. And I want more people to notice this issue and realize the problem and take it seriously so everyone can take steps to avoid becoming the reason an author stops being an author.
I just read your "stop commenting like the author is dead post" and I completely agree with you. May I ask if there is anything one can say to an author (other than thanking them for their work and complimenting the fic) if they have suddenly stopped posting out of nowhere? There are some authors who posted regularly and just completely stopped and I'm tempted to add something like "I hope you are doing well and that everything is okay" but I don't want to make them feel bad or that they have to justify their decisions. How would you feel to get such a comment? My intention is not to guilt them into updating but good intentions can still make people feel bad
I have had comments where people say exactly that (the “hope you’re doing well and that everything is ok”) and I’ll say that this is the angelic other side of the coin of the “update now!” devil side.
Saying “i noticed you haven’t updated as you usually do, I hope everything is ok.” (Oftentimes this comment type continues on to specify that they are not asking after an update but instead are asking after the well-being of the author, such as “no pressure or anything! Just hope that you’re doing well”) this comment highlights the fact that the commentor is only asking because they noticed that the trends of the author’s posting have changed suddenly without warning and it’s made them concerned for the author. The commentor in this case is asking if the author is alright and letting them know that the commentor is hoping for their well-being. It’s coming from a kind place, a human place. It lets the author know that the commentor acknowledges that they are a person, too.
That’s completely different from comments that just say “noticed this hasn’t updated in a long time. Are you still working on this?/Why is it always the good stories that get abandoned?” Because THIS comment communicates to the author that the commentor does not care about the author themself, only the content that the author provides for them. Chapter updates are only a transaction in the eyes of the commentor, one that they feel entitled to despite not paying for them, and they’re annoyed that they have not received their product as per usual. They are commenting on the change in the quality of service and wish to voice their complaints to the provider for slacking. It lets the author know that the commentor does not see them as a person, but as a source of media.
So while the two comments above are similar aside from how they’re worded, they communicate two different mindsets. One is someone asking after another person’s wellbeing and wishing them well, and the second is someone annoyed that the content creator they feel entitled to the content of hasn’t been ‘doing their job’ despite not being paid for it at all.
Hopefully this helps clarify why we authors find it so offensive and insulting to receive the second type of comments.
But rest assured, we (or at least I personally) actually find the first type of comment as something nice to receive bc it means you care.

You highlight one of the more immediate consequences of people leaving comments on this, that somehow they don’t seem to realize:
When you comment on a fic and all you say is to ask when the next update is coming or to demand more, did you know you are actually lowering the author’s willingness to give you that update?
I myself had a whole chapter all ready to go and post, and decided to look through my emails before I did so. I got a comment on that very fic I’d just finished a chapter for, and all it said was “I notice it’s been a while since you updated, are we getting anymore of this? I need to know so I don’t waste my time waiting”
Immediately, I decided then and there that I wouldn’t be updating that fic that day. Actually, I haven’t updated it yet. I’ve had a chapter sitting there ready to go for over two years now and every time I think about finally posting it, I just see that comment in my head and am annoyed all over again.
Why the fuck would I update a fic — hell, why would I keep writing a fic, when all I got in my comments were annoying, entitled little brats who demand more and more and more out of me as if I’m the motherfucking Giving Tree?
I already struggle with finding time and motivation and energy to do the hobbies I enjoy. It’s even harder to find motivation to write when people comment shit like they think they’re the reason you’re writing.
Anyway if you’ve gotten this far in the posts and you see yourself in the comments we’ve shared as examples, you need to know that YOU are the reason that story hasn’t updated yet.
Also I do recommend reading the tags other authors have left on this. It highlights things you might not realize are commonplace bc this style of commenting has encouraged people to be entitled to fanfics. Things like death threats for not writing a story the way someone wanted or not updating fast enough
Just. What the hell is wrong with you people. Don’t bothering commenting if you can only comment like this. You’re the last person authors want reading their stories.
Y’all need to stop commenting on fics like the author is dead or something. The author sees those comments bro it’s like saying to someone’s face “sorry to hear about your passing. Actual replies I have received on my real fics from reader who either don’t realize they’re being awful or do realize they’re being awful and rude and don’t care:
(Please note NONE of the stories that these comments were left on had ANY note from the author of being abandoned, on hiatus, or otherwise not being worked on.)
“Sad it hasn't updated in so long but I'll be here just in case it one day does”
“Sucks that this is abandoned it’s one of my favorites”
“Are you planning on continuing this? I check on it every day I’m really worried it’s not going to be finished :(“
“sorry to see this only has one chapter”
“I know it’s been around 2 years but when do you think you will update again 😭😭😭😭”
“Help it’s been more then a year, is this discontinued?”
“This story does not continue?I am waiting for the next season.”
“I've been waiting for an update bfrr😭”
Reader: Rewrite he said 😞 yet only this much content... great content nonetheless. Truly good things don't last 😩
Me: I’ll get around to it when I want to and not a moment sooner.
Reader: Well so long as you ain't completely dead to the fandom...could I've the ffn link tho...
(Above comment exchange was on a fic where in the notes I explicitly state I hate the FFN original version younger me wrote and ask reader to not try and find it)
Now I do want mention I have a LOT of comments, and these are not the majority. I did have to scroll a lot through my email to weed out these examples.
However imagine if I did not have as big a reader base, and these were the majority of comments I received on my stories? Can you imagine how that would feel. I put hours of my free time and effort into writing and share it with the world for absolute free and people decide to come in and treat me like I’m a showriter that their viewership matters to?
And before you say “but Vod ur just being hypothetical” I want you to know there ARE authors out there where that’s their reality. Bc of people like you who comment like that^.
So I’ll reiterate: unless a story has a specific note or announcement from the author themself that it is no longer updating, you don’t get to decide they are dead just because you didn’t get an update a week like you wanted. Don’t be selfish. Don’t be demanding.
Don’t comment if all you have to say is “hey are you going to update or are you just dead? I’m disappointed in u”
If you comment like that on ANY fic (yes even if it IS announced as abandoned by the author, they can still see your comments and you are talking to a real life person) then your being fucking rude.
Y’all need to stop commenting on fics like the author is dead or something. The author sees those comments bro it’s like saying to someone’s face “sorry to hear about your passing. newbie fic authors, shooting themselves in the foot: This fic is bad haha I suck at writing lol I am being mean to myself in the hopes that you will be nice to me but actually am dissuading anyone from even clicking on my fic because all I have done to advertise it is tell you why you shouldn't read it
me: I am King Big Dick of Fanfic Mountain and I have arrived in your fandom with the Express Intention of writing my Very Favorite Fics, which I will generously allow you to read. You're welcome.

“One of the most solid pieces of writing advice I know is in fact intended for dancers – you can find it in the choreographer Martha Graham’s biography. But it relaxes me in front of my laptop the same way I imagine it might induce a young dancer to breathe deeply and wiggle their fingers and toes. Graham writes: ‘There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.’”

It IS true that being on here gives you a tumblr accent. This morning my mother asked me something and i replied "i don't know i've never heard these words in that order" and she nearly choked laughing. It wasn't even that funny
