something happened today
I saw something really traumatic today while riding home my normal route on Line 57. I really couldn’t tell if it was some kind of prank gone wrong or just a cruel act of bigotry, but it was really, really, fucked up. As usual, I went to board my regular stop at Athol Avenue at approximately 4:46 P.M. in the afternoon after visiting my friend at the Haddon Hill Café. As soon as I stepped into the transit vehicle, I walked down the inner alley of the double-length bus and headed to the very back of it. One person was sat down in the middle of the row; male or female, I couldn’t really tell. They had a small novel resting upon their head and a noticeable translucent, white skirt that was hanging over the edge of their seat. The reason why I’m mentioning their choice of dress will all make sense later when I explain to you the sheer event that occurred.
So I sit down at the window seat, with just one chair closing the distance between me and the sleeping stranger. Honestly, nothing really happens in the passing ten minutes until two men board the bus. One looks about the age of seventeen or sixteen, and he’s wearing a casual fit with a “black hoodie over a white T-shirt and an orange-billed New York Knicks hat” (Slater 110). The other man looks much older, wearing similar attire to the younger man, but with no cap. The two men head toward my direction and turn to greet a boy ahead of me. From there, I could hear little snippets of their conversation as the older one jumped up and down, trying to recreate a tune to what I recognized to be—a Drake song? I really couldn’t tell. After a bit more chattering and catcalling women, one of the men turned their attention to the person next to me with the skirt. They were pointing and giggling with wide grins on their face, obviously finding the feminine dress on the masculine individual quite comical and “weird”. The laughing slowly faded away as one of the older guys handed the younger man a lighter and got an iPhone out, ready to record in his hand.
They kept catcalling the woman in the front, yelling, “’Hey! Light-skinned!’” (Slater 112) as they ushered the little boy closer to the person sleeping on the bus. Their voices bounced off the walls as they yelled and screamed nonsense into each other's ears. At that point, I didn’t know what was going to happen, and I surely didn’t want to know. The younger boy repeatedly kept flicking the lighter’s flint wheel in his hand, until the fluid inside the container erupted into a small flame. On the fourth try, the fire transferred to the sleeping chick’s skirt, which caused the cloth to then burst up into embers. The three men jumped off the bus after yelling something to the driver inaudible to me. The person awoke from their nap in a panic, and started swearing uncontrollably while their skirt began to turn into a wildfire. I didn’t know what to do, but I quickly got out of my seat and ran for the doors. The screams inside of the bus entered out and in of my ears as I darted for the exit. A mustached man shoved me aside to a seat while sprinting across the aisle to help the person being burnt alive behind me. As the driver slowed the bus to a curb, the doors opened on command and I sprinted out of the vehicle, many following behind me. I didn’t know what to do. I don’t know what happened. I’m a coward, I knew it—but I still kept running.
