How to Be Better at Presentations
People who have put together presentations will know how something that seems so simple at the start becomes this monstrosity towards the end. Putting together a few slides is easy right? Wrong. What starts off as a simple idea, becomes this epic conquest for perfection as you mull over a single agenda slide. The perfect laid plans of building the ‘deck’ (that’s pro marketing speak for the presentation itself) are completely ignored, especially the rehearsing part, as you slave into the small hours trying to get this done.
That is when you are working by yourself on said ‘deck,’ the issues multiply quickly when you must put together the presentation with multiple people. It cannot be overstated how much more difficult it is to create a proper ‘flow’ in the presentation, that is again pro-marketing speak for a logical story. Worst case scenario is that you spend loads of time on a beautiful looking deck, only for it to read as if a 6-year-old kid has written it.
Here are some top tips to help you craft the next as-good-as-it-gets deck, as perfection is really the enemy.
It all starts with having a plan. Do realize that plans can change as you are crafting the presentation. Give yourself plenty of time, book in time to find appropriate visual elements, but also limit the time you spend mucking about. Give yourself time to check and rehearse the presentation.
Working in a group, it’s vital to have regular check-ins to check if the story told consistently. It also helps to make sure people are on track and that any new findings or insights are accounted for when constructing the story.
At this stage, it’s essential to have a guideline on how the presentation will look, either by providing a template or setting clear rules on which font to use and what font sizes are desired. Granted you will most likely have one person performing a formatting check before you reach your final version, you do want to minimize the amount of work required in these final stages.
Also, try to minimize things you can’t control. Don’t rely on very specific fonts if there’s a chance you are running the presentation on a device other than your own. If you’re adamant about using particular fonts, export the presentation to a PDF document just to be sure you can present something if all things go wrong. In the same vein don’t rely on external assets to work that requires a live connection to the internet. Playing videos in presentations are notorious for going wrong. Download the video if you can and put it on the same location as your presentation is a good move. If you require a YouTube video, you can find more information here: https://setapp.com/how-to/download-youtube-videos.
And it’s been mentioned before, but practice makes perfect: rehearse. Even if it’s just in front of a mirror, you need a run to check how things sound (having an audience is perfect) and, more importantly, how long the presentation will take. There is nothing worse than having to rattle off the last 20 slides in 2 minutes.

Family Games To Play During A Power Cut
You’re sat downstairs on a Saturday evening. Everyone in the family is in the living room watching Netflix on the 4K television. Suddenly the power goes out and the whole room is covered in darkness. You look at your phone and it’s only 5pm. It’s too late to go out and do something but it’s too early to call it a night and go to bed. The children haven’t even had their dinner yet, so what do you do to keep them entertained? First off you need to fill your room with light, so go and grab some torches, some candles and hopefully a portable LED lamp. After you have restored some kind of light in the room and wait for the power to come back on, try to think of things you could do as a family to pass the time. Far from what you might think, you don’t need to succumb to the boredom and whip out a plain writing book to play naughts and crosses.
youtube
A little bit of strategy
Many people find that board games really come alive when there is strategy at play. The usual way of these games is to include die rolls followed by the drawing of cards that give the play features. Then, moving their pieces on the board to play out their owns strategy. Children are far more intelligent than we give them credit for, so don’t overlook that your kids might have more fun playing this kind of board game than say connect 4. One of the best strategy games is Risk. it’s essentially about world domination, and players each have their own starting base. Depending on their personality, the player can play it safe and manage a strong powerful country, or risk it all by trying to go about taking over other parts of the board where other players have their pieces.
youtube
Taking your time
When there’s a power outage, there are usually some people who just want to chill and others that want to do something that’s not too taxing. Your partner may want to go into the kitchen and get a glass of wine while you can do something which involves taking your time for the ultimate reward. For example, gibsons jigsaw puzzles have picturesque paintings such as a Night In Paris by the river, or beautiful pictures of the UK and it’s various landmarks. These can come in 500 to 1000 piece puzzles. They’re not too long and they’re not too short either and with each piece fitted you reveal something that you can recognize.
Map and teams
A game that everyone can play and learn something is a map quiz. This game is about guessing which country is which on a blank map. You can divide into teams and communicate with each other to make the right calls. It’s simple but involves knowledge and teamwork.
The blackout won’t be forever but it might be for hours. So if there’s still time in the day, get a game like Risk that involves strategy or perhaps something more laidback and rewarding over time such as a classic jigsaw puzzle.

5 More Obscure PS2 RPGs You Probably Haven’t Played, But Really Should
Back in September, I did a post on some PS2 RPGs that you probably haven’t played (which you can read here). As with my obscure PS1 RPG series of posts, I wanted to bring attention to all of the great PS2 RPGs that tend to get overshadowed by the likes of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. After all, the RPG genre is massive and there are some really unique and interesting games out there.
So, for today’s post, we’re going to continue our look at obscure PS2 RPGs and count down 5 more PS2 RPGs that you probably haven’t played, but should really try!
5. Ring of Red
We’re going to start off by saying that these type of posts don’t have any structured order to them. I’m not listing out the 5 best RPGs on the PS2, after all. We are looking at 5 obscure RPGs that you should play at least once, to see what you think of them. That said, Ring of Red is a very fun yet extremely challenging turn-based tactical RPG featuring giant robots. What more could you want?
In this day and age where challenge and the unforgiving nature of difficult games has become a huge positive (thanks mostly to Dark Souls), it seems like it may be the perfect time for Ring of Red to make a comeback. The game was often overlooked due to the fact that it offers a real sense of challenge, unlike a lot of story-driven RPGs. The gameplay will have you on the edge of the seat, whilst the plot will keep you wanting to move forward.
Ring of Red certainly could have done with some extra polish, but the end product that we did get is thoroughly enjoyable, so I would definitely recommend trying it at least once!
4. Steambot Chronicles
You’re probably noticing a bit of a pattern here, but Steambot Chronicles is another PS2 RPG that features giant robots. The difference in these robots is that they a part of a steampunk world, meaning that they are steam-powered mecha. Oh, and the game itself is actually an action RPG as opposed to a turn-based strategy RPG. This means that the gameplay is far more frantic compared to the likes of Ring of Red. With an interesting take of early sandbox gaming, Steambot Chronicles manages to carve its own little place in the RPG genre on PlayStation 2.
Even on Metacritic, people praise the fact that Steambot Chronicles takes the base ideology and gameplay of the RPG genre and tears it to pieces, creating its own set of rules on how the RPG can be played. This, alone, would get it on a list of 7 obscure PS2 RPGs. However, it is how everything comes together to create a wonderful little game that makes Steambot Chronicles a PS2 RPG that you really should play.
3. Okage: Shadow King
Next, we are moving away for the oft-forgotten PS2 RPG to the downright weird. Okage: Shadow King is the definition of a unique RPG, featuring some of the most memorable characters I have seen. However, the most memorable part of these characters is their design, personality and sheer weirdness. Everything about Okage screams the fact that the developers wanted to create a game that truly was different from the typical and cliche RPG structure.
Since its release, Okage has gained a much more devout following due to its impressive but extremely different type of story and character design. Okage: Shadow King is one of those games where the box art will intrigue you from the get-go. From there, you’ll find that it is actually fun and enjoyable to play as well.
2. Magna Carta: Tears of Blood
The first time that I played Magna Carta: Tears of Blood was when I rented it, back when renting games from your local rental store was still a thing. The front cover was what initially caught my attention. I loved the style of the characters, so I just had to see what the game was like. Then, when playing it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that, like some of my favourite RPGs (such as Legend of Dragoon and Shadow Hearts), it had a battle system that completely broke the norm for the RPG genre.
With a combat system that felt like a mix between Star Ocean and Legend of Dragoon, you are taken into a “battle screen” like most J-RPGs, but you can freely move around in that battle screen. Then, in order to attack, you need to press a series of button prompts. This hit me hard due to my love of the Additions in Legend of Dragoon, and helps to make Magna Carta: Tears of Blood really stand on its own in a rather saturated genre. The plot is enjoyable, as well, even if it isn’t quite at the same level of games like Final Fantasy.
1. MS Saga
Now, this last one is more of a personal entry, as the game itself isn’t outstanding. The plot can be somewhat predictable in MS Saga, but as a Gundam RPG, it really does stand out on its own compared to many other RPGs on the PS2. MS Saga features heavy customisation for your Mobile Suits and Gundam, with a really interesting take on the equipment system. It almost feels more like inventory management in Resident Evil 4 than a typical J-RPG’s equip system. This means that you can customise your party and Mobile Suits to your heart’s content, allowing you to create your perfect team of giant mechs.
Whilst the story of MS Saga isn’t going to win any awards, it really is the little gameplay tweaks that make it stand out. If you’re a fan of giant robots, Gundam in general, or are looking for a quaint little RPG to spend some time on, then MS Saga is a great game to play. However, if you are looking for a deep and meaningful storyline, maybe save MS Saga for another day

And That’s All Folks
There you have it; 5 more obscure PS2 RPGs that you probably haven’t played, but really should! They aren’t all masterpieces of game design, but that’s not what really matters, is it? The fact is, each one of these PS2 RPGs is very fun to play and will have you invested in them through gameplay instead.
Are there any obscure PS2 RPGs out that which, in your opinion, don’t get enough attention? Let us know in the comments below!

A Special Thank You And Look To The Future
Well, there’s no top 7 list today, nor a review anything else along those lines. In fact, today’s post won’t even directly be about retro gaming. Instead, we are going to be doing something a little different, obviously.
I wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who reads this blog, watches my streams, chats in the 16-Bit Tribe Discord and/or follows me on Twitter. You guys are all incredibly awesome, and thanks to you all, I had a huge surprise last Friday.
A Huge Thank You
So last Friday, the UK Blog Awards went live on YouTube to announce the winners for their awards for 2019. One of their categories was Gaming, and I was so extremely proud to be nominated. It was an amazing feeling. Then, to get through to being a finalist was incredible. However, the point in which my brain exploded was on Friday when they announced that 16-Bit Dad had won the Best Gaming Blog 2019 award!
That is insane! And it’s all thanks to you guys!
Every single one of you that has read a post on here, or interacted with me in some way, helped drive 16-Bit Dad forward. You helped me get to this point, and I will be forever grateful! Along the way, there have been some things that really hit my confidence, but you guys pulled me through. So yeah, thank you.
Don’t Let Others Break You
As a way of giving something back, I wanted to share the one really important thing that I have learned over the past 2 years, and share the story behind it.
For the first 6 months of blogging, this site was getting about 200 visits per month. It was small, but I was so happy that 200 people cared enough about what I was writing that they came to look at the site. It was, at that point, where I started getting small companies wanting to work with me in a variety of ways. After a couple more months passed and I’d done work with a few companies, I decided to take the first step for a change and contact one business that I wanted to work with.
The response that I got was heartbreaking. They said that this site was an extremely low-quality blog that would “never be worth their time to look at” and that they would never work with me.
That message hit me like a tonne of bricks. I had been pouring my heart and soul into this blog, spending around 20 to 25 hours per week on the site on top of my full-time job and my family time. Yet, here was a company that I wanted to work with, telling me that all of my time and effort were wasted on a low-quality blog. It was so disheartening.
However, rather than give up, I decided that I wanted to prove them wrong.
So, I kept slogging away at the blog, pushing as much as I could to grow. Over time, more and more of you awesome people found the site, and it grew with every month. Now, about a year and a half later, we hit over 15,000 people reading the blog in one month! From 200 to over 15,000! That still blows my mind.
On top of this, I’ve been able to work with a whole host of companies, many of which are much bigger than the one that put me down. I’ve been able to do a semi-interview with the director of my favourite game, and the blog has gone on to win the aforementioned award. Oh, and I’ve since been contacted by that same company asking to work with me – I just replied with a copy of their previous email.
And that leads me nicely into the point of this story; no matter what someone says about the content that you are creating, don’t give up! You’ll get there, and you’ll prove them wrong! Don’t give up on something you love just because others try to put you down.
A Look To The Future
So now that you know that, and the fact that I am not giving up, it’s time to look forward and start thinking about what the future of 16-Bit Dad is. So far, we have a blog and live streaming on Twitch. But I want to make sure I can give you guys the best content I can, in a variety of ways. Therefore, I have a few ideas (some of which have already started but only just).
The Brand
For those who follow me on Twitter, you may have already seen that I have finally come up with a tag line for 16-Bit Dad. This tag line now defines the focus of what 16-Bit Dad is moving forward;
Obscure Is The Cure
Specifically, this refers to the fact that I am not a fan of repetitive game design and churning out a reskinned version of the same game every single year. I prefer experimentation and originality in game design. I prefer to games that don’t get the huge advertising budgets and the massive following.
So, I’ll be doing a lot of posts and showcases for games that you may have missed because of how prominent the “big” games are. I want to share these games with you so that you can find new and exciting games to experience. And to do that, there are a few ideas that I am going to be implementing over the coming months.
The Blog
As it seems that people prefer reading my top 7 posts over more focused reviews, I’m going to focus on doing those lists more than other types of posts. That way, I can share some of the games that you may have missed. But don’t worry, I won’t be doing a tonne of “hidden gem” posts
MetalJesusRocks already covers that side of retro gaming pretty damn well.
Instead, I’ll be focusing on games that you should play but probably haven’t; games that did not get the publicity they deserved or games that are just downright weird but enjoyable.
Twitch
Over on Twitch, I’ve been doing two streams per week based upon two “categories”, as it were. Specifically, on Fridays, I have been playing through Retro Games such as Final Fantasy VIII and Legend of Dragoon, whilst on Saturdays we have been playing through Modern Games, starting with Persona 5.
However, I am now adding an extra stream on Sundays.
This stream will feature a random retro game, different each week. The game will be chosen from a Master List of games using a random number generator, and once a game has been played, it can’t be chosen again. Oh! And the Master List can be added to by anyone in the 16-Bit Tribe Discord, so you can add any games you would want me to try out and stream, as long as they are at least 10 years old and not HD games (as I don’t have a capture card that can handle HDMI yet).
YouTube
For a while now, the 16-Bit Dad YouTube channel has largely been used to back up my streams on Twitch, with the odd unboxing or pickups video thrown in. However, I want to actually spend some time on getting new and unique content for the YouTube channel.
On Twitter, I recently ran a poll to see whether people still enjoy Let’s Play videos.
What’s your opinion on recorded let’s play videos in the current YouTube world? (Not livestreams, but old school let’s plays) #smallyoutuber #SmallYouTuberArmy #gamersunite #retrogaming
— Gareth @ 16-Bit Dad (@16bitdadblog) April 14, 2019
As you can see from the results, it was a resounding win for the idea that Let’s Play videos are still relevant and enjoyable. As such, I will be adding Let’s Play series onto YouTube in the coming weeks. I plan to record quite a few 15-minute episodes at one time, in order to give consistent content for a few weeks at a time. This means that you get good quality content on YouTube without me having to sacrifice the content for the blog or Twitch!
I’m also looking at other ways to expand the content offering on YouTube, but haven’t finalised any ideas yet.
And That’s All Folks
In the end, there wasn’t really an amazing point to this post. I really just wanted to say thank you to every single one of you, and discuss my plans for 16-Bit Dad and how I can give you all more content. I hope you are as excited about the future as I am.
If you have any suggestions on what content you would like to see, then feel free to leave a comment below!

Save Toward Your Child’s Education by Earning Extra Online
As parents, it is only natural that we want the best for our kids. This is not just in terms of what we can do for them now but also in the future when it comes to vital matters such as their education. Many of us have come to realize that a good education does not always come cheap, which is why it is important to try to save toward your child’s future education.
There is a lot of pressure on parents these days to save toward their child’s further education. By starting early, you can ensure there is enough cash available for your little ones when the time comes. However, if you are working for someone and are on a fixed income, you may struggle to find the extra cash to put aside. So, what is the answer?
Earn Some Extra Money in Your Spare Time
One solution, if you want to put money aside for your child’s education, is to earn some extra cash from your spare time. Thanks to modern technology, this is something that is relatively easy to do, as you can work from home in the evenings or on weekends to bring in extra money. You can even head to sites such as BestSEOCompanies.com to find professionals to help market your part-time venture in order to boost your success.
So, what sort of work could you do if you want to earn extra cash to put aside for your children’s future? Well, one of the things you could do is become an online seller, which is a simple and potentially lucrative venture. Many people set up their own retail ventures by developing their own websites or via platforms such as eBay. You can then operate your retail business from your own home on a part-time basis to suit your existing schedule.
With access to high-speed internet in the home, there are various methods by which you can earn extra money on a regular basis. You can offer a range of services online such as providing online writing services or freelance web design services. These are the services that you can offer on a part-time basis to fit around your existing commitments. You don’t need to spend money getting these ventures started up either, as you only need internet access and a computer in order to get things moving.
Making an Early Start
As many parents will confirm, it is amazing how quickly your little ones grow up. One minute, they are toddlers and the next they are getting ready to go to university. With this in mind, it is important not to put off saving for your child’s education. The earlier you start putting aside some money, the more you will be able to help your child in the future.
With the various options that allow you to earn money from home, you don’t have to worry about leaving the house or getting childcare to enable you to make some extra cash. You can do it with ease and convenience from the comfort of your own home.

Comparing Car Insurance
Comparing car insurance is not easy to do manually. Not only does it take a lot of time, but also you are bound to miss out on some of the best deals. This is why using a comparison website comes highly advised. We reveal the benefits of this approach below.
A comparison website makes it easy for you to see quotes from all of the best insurance companies. If you simply type car insurance quotes into Google or any other search engine website, you will be met with numerous results. We have a tendency to assume that the best results are going to be at the top of the first page, but this isn’t always the case. You will have to sift through each website manually in order to find the best deal. This is exceptionally time-consuming and, ultimately, unnecessary. You are bound to miss out on some great offers by going for this approach, and it will take you much, much longer than it would if you were to use a comparison website.
With a comparison site, all of the best deals will be presented on one-page, with all of the crucial information visible, making it easy for you to compare all insurance plans against one and other. You can also search different models if you are yet to buy a car yet so you can choose an insurance-friendly motor from the likes of Martin Brothers Motor Company. Most comparison companies are also more than happy to provide you with advice when it comes to choosing the best insurance plan. Their opinion will be unbiased, as they won’t have any connections with the policies being offered, ensuring you end up with the best expert assistance.
Finding The Best Comparison Website
Car insurance compare websites are designed to make it easier for you to find the car insurance plan for you. However, not all comparison websites are reputable or useful for that matter. Some have connections with different insurance providers and, therefore, they will try to point you in a certain direction.
There are then those who simply do not have enough connections with various insurance companies, which means they cannot present you with enough options, so you won’t find the perfect deal for you and you could end up compromising on your wants. This is why you need to select an insurance comparison website with care. Make sure they present you with a huge assortment of options so that you are guaranteed to find the best insurance plan for you.
You should also be able to compare the results with ease, organising them based on what is most important to you, for example, monthly premium rate. You will also need to ensure that the comparison firm is impartial. They should not try to push you in the direction of a specific insurer, and they should be more than willing to provide you with objective advice. It is a good idea to read reviews that have been left by people who have used the comparison website before. If you come across a lot of negative comments, you know to look elsewhere. Finally, you should not have to pay to use a comparison website, so make sure you choose a free service.

5 Way to Honour Your Inner Child as a Man
You know the story. When you are a child, you have all the time and energy but no money. When you are an adult early in your career, you have time and energy, but still no disposable income. When you made your career, you might have money, but no time nor energy. And when you are retired, you have all the time and money, but no energy at all. Of all the things this pattern effects, it might just affect boys and their toys the most. If you have the money, ask yourself if you simply haven’t made enough space in your life to indulge yourself? Maybe now is the time? Here are 5 things that would have been on most boys’ wish list for when they are older.
Foosball
If you have a competitive nature, but would enjoy competition more while holding a bottle of cold beer, a foosball table will be your thing. Of course, no spinning allowed! The foosball table is a great centrepiece for any man cave, providing sheer entertainment for hours.
Nerf Guns
Also high on most boys’ lists is a nerf gun. And we are not talking about those small nerf guns kids play with. We are talking full on heavy armament type nerf guns. One that wouldn’t look out of place in a Predator or Rambo film. Here’s an idea. Provide your guests with standard nerf guns and see their faces drop when you break out your BFG-style version. All in good spirit though, as you don’t want to start a nerf escalation war!
RC Vehicles
One of the best gifts you can get yourself is an over the top radio control vehicle. They come in many shapes and sizes. You can find good RC cars of pretty much any make and model you can think of. Or if you are more into helicopters and planes, you will have options too. Yes, controlling an RC car, plane or helicopter might sound childish, but would you really call someone a child who is drifting a model car with 4WD? RC models can pack quite a punch in terms of speed and control. You will want to ensure that the battery capacity will last for hours of fun.
VR Gaming
Or here is something more tech minded people would like: a full VR set including VR capable PC setup. Now we indeed entered a boys with their toys realm. There are plenty of good options available nowadays and having a VR capable PC is not out of reach for most anymore. There are even prototype developments that help solve the movement issue if you have limited room, so watch this space.
3D Printing
For the more creative-minded men out there, consider a 3D printer. Seeing a 3d model you built in CAD come to live is a fantastic experience. You might even be an inventor in waiting. The range in which they come goes from dirt cheap to extremely expensive. Consider the size of the 3d printed objects you are going for and what kind of filaments the printer accepts.
There you go, 5 options for grown boys. Best to act now before you don’t have the energy left to indulge yourself!

What I Do To Stay Calm and Relaxed As A Dad
One thing that I’ve noticed since becoming a parent (but most certainly not an adult) is that you really need to remain as calm and stress-free as possible. Not for yourself, mind you, but for your kids. By staying calm and relaxed, you’ll find that you are able to bond with your children far better.
However, in this day and age (where stress and anxiety are commonplace), how does one stay calm? Well, I thought I’d share a few methods that I use, just in case anyone is interested.
Watching Livestreams
A few years ago, I really wouldn’t have thought that I could relax and switch off when watching someone else playing a game. I kind of assumed I would end up getting annoyed when I knew what to do but the streamer didn’t. However, that’s really not the case at all. I’ve since found that, by watching decent streamers on Twitch, I can actually turn off my brain and largely forget about the annoyances of the day.
This helps me relax in the evenings, ready to start the next day in a much better mood. That also means that I am ready to play with my daughter, laugh and have fun without the stresses of the previous day weighing on my shoulders.
Listening To Music
Now this is something that is highly subjective since everyone has a different taste in music. However, I’m sure we can all agree that music helps to improve your mood. No matter whether you’re happy, sad or angry, there is a definite type of music that will suit your mood and help you relax. For me, it’s typically some form of Metal or Punk, but you’ll all have a different genre that generally helps you feel better about something.
I mean, there’s a reason why music has been around as long as humans can remember; it resonates with us. So finding that perfect playlist for your current mood is a brilliant way to let that stress just flow straight out of you.
Taking Chances
The next thing to talk about is the fact that I love adrenaline rushes. I always have
From riding my bike over large jumps to skateboarding, windsurfing and bungee jumping, I love the feeling of pure adrenaline. However, now that I’m a Dad, I don’t want to take the risks associated with these types of activities. So, I needed to find other ways to get that adrenaline rush. After all, that rush definitely helps me calm down again.
So what can I do to get an adrenaline rush now? Well, one way is to play games that are extremely hard. Whilst I haven’t played it yet, games like Sekiro are perfect for this. Then there is the option to watch horror movies, or if you wanted to, you could even play video slots online. All of these activities will give you an adrenaline rush that will help you chill out, although I would recommend that you do them sporadically.
Reading A Story To My Daughter
Finally, the last thing I wanted to discuss was probably the simplest yet best way I’ve found to relax and calm myself after a hard day at work; reading a bedtime story to my daughter. There is something incredibly enjoyable about reading through a simple story whilst your child hangs on your every word, laughing along with your terrible voices. It’s wonderfully soothing, and also really helps to grow the bond between you both.
Reading a story to your child is such an amazing experience that I really can’t describe it. But it definitely makes me feel so much happier and less stressed.
And That’s All Folks
Those were just a few ways in which I stay calm, allowing me to enjoy my time with my daughter far better. By keeping my stress levels at an absolute minimum, I’m actually able to be a better Dad, so I’m always trying to find other ways to relax.
How do you relax and get rid of your stress? Let me know in the comments below!

Yet Another 7 PSX RPGs Everyone Should Play
I think I should start making a list of all of these PSX RPG articles, just so that everyone can easily jump between them. But either way, today we are going to be continuing a series of articles that started at some point last year. However, today is also the point where I change things up a bit; I’ve been trying to sort professional and stiff with my posts, but honestly, it’s a bit tiring
 It’s also not me.
So, I’m throwing that all out of the window and from now on, I’m just going to write the way I would talk. Thus, welcome to the new, more relaxed and (hopefully) more entertaining 16-Bit Dad, as we take a look at yet another 7 PSX RPGs that everyone should play!
7. Grandia
Let’s start of this list with a game that I’ve seen mentioned a few times in YouTube videos, but one that I don’t see spoken about much at all on the likes of Twitter; Grandia. Developed by Game Arts, who I have to say are absolute geniuses when it comes to amazing RPGs (they made the Lunar series, after all), Grandia was released on the PlayStation in 1999, 2 years after it’s Sega Saturn release. At the time, I was a budding little anime lover who could easily be drawn into something as long as it had hints of anime style. That was how I picked up Grandia; the cover art.
The mixture of fantasy and so-called “emerging technology” really hit it off with me, harkening back to my love of Wild ARMS and Final Fantasy. However, when I actually started playing the game, I was pleased to see that Grandia offered more than a slight nostalgia-trip brought on by the world design. The combat, especially, was something very different to what I was used to at the time. The sliding bar at the bottom right with the turn order meant that I could plan out my strategies better, but also that I needed to pay more attention that in other RPGs. Also, whilst it’s a minor thing, the camera’s movement during a battle made it feel far more intense.
Oh, and the soundtrack manages to switch between amazing and downright weird all the time, which makes it incredibly amusing. Overall, Grandia is a great alternative RPG compared to the big names out there, and I’m planning to go back to it very soon, too.
6. Breath of Fire 3
Now, I could have included both Breath of Fire 3 and 4 in this list, but I wanted to keep it to just one game per franchise, per list. So, for this list, I have decided to go with Breath of Fire 3. Even though the fourth game is (arguably) the more well-rounded game, Breath of Fire 3 tops it for me as one of the key PS1 RPGs out there. The 2D sprites on a 3D world are all beautifully animated and still look great today. Oh, and the music is just outstanding. The composer, Akari Kaida, did a truly awesome job at putting together a memorable and emotive soundtrack that I can still listen to today!
The story and characters, whilst better in Breath of Fire 4, are all well fleshed out with personalities, which only adds to the immersion of the game. Set over two different periods of time, you get to see how the characters grow and develop as the game progresses, which I’m surprised to say isn’t actually that common in RPGs for the time
 Strange, don’t you think?
5. Shin Megami Tensei if

Well, I mean, we’ve already had Persona 2 on the other lists, so it was only a matter of time before another Shin Megami Tensei game appeared. Shin Megami Tensei if
is a PSX RPG that was only released in Japan, unfortunately. That meant that, as a kid, I didn’t actually get a chance to play the game. However, as I grew up and became able to play imported games through a variety of methods, I finally gave Shin Megami Tensei if
a try. Retaining the creepy nature of the Shin Megami Tensei games, as well as the first person dungeon crawling aspects, this entry in the franchise continued to live up to the previous entries.
I won’t lie, though. It will take some getting used to if you’ve only really played more traditional PSX RPGs. The combat and movement are all very different from what many people would expect. However, don’t let that put you off. Once you’ve nailed the gameplay ideas and mechanics, you’ll be in for one hell of a treat!
4. Mega Man Legends
Next up, we have a game that, in its franchise, was one of the lower selling entries. However, Mega Man Legends is actually a surprisingly fun game. When I first played it, I went in expecting to dislike the game. The idea of Mega Man in an RPG-style game was a bit off-putting. Yet, here I am, including it on this list! Why?
Well, the game hasn’t aged brilliantly in terms of graphics, but the gameplay still holds up as it did at the time. Overall, Mega Man Legends is a relatively wholesome affair compared to most of the games I play, meaning that it is also very easy to get into. This action RPG is light-hearted, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable, which are all of the criteria that Mega Man Legends needs. If you’re looking for an RPG that doesn’t need incredibly political plots or demons destroying all life on the planet in order to be fun, then you really should try Mega Man Legends.
3. Legend of Mana
Moving on to the next entry in this ever-growing list of PSX RPGs, that has now gotten so long over 4 posts that I largely forget what I’ve already included, we have Legend of Mana. The more commonly known entry in the “Mana” series (called Seiken Densetsu in Japan) is Secret of Mana, which was the second entry in the series. Legend of Mana is actually the fourth game to be released in the series (the third was only released in Japan).
This game came out during the time when seeing Squaresoft on the front cover of a game meant that you were in for one hell of a great ride. Legend of Mana lived up to that mentality completely, having me hooked from start to finish. I wasn’t a big fan of action RPGs at the time, preferring more traditional turn-based ones. However, there was just something about Legend of Mana that buried its claws into me and wouldn’t let go.
What was really interesting about Legend of Mana at the time, especially for someone like me who was used to RPGs with massive yet focused plots, was the lack of an overarching storyline. Rather than featuring one massive quest for the characters to undertake, Legend of Mana features a bunch of smaller questlines and story arcs for you to follow. These all eventually lead into the final story arc, creating a very unique way of telling an RPG story.
2. Threads of Fates
Earlier on, I said that 1999 was the year in which I could be captured purely by a nice piece of anime style cover art. Well, that’s what first caught my attention when my mother’s boyfriend gave me an imported copy of Threads of Fate. The cover art looked so good that I just had to try it out. However, because it was an action RPG and I was still not really accustomed to them, I didn’t play it for long and it was soon lost to time. I have no idea what happened to that copy of the game.
I’ve since matured (a bit) and tried the game again, and I was pleasantly surprised. It certainly isn’t the best action RPG out there and does has a number of flaws. However, Threads of Fate is most certainly enjoyable, and that’s kind of the point of a game, really.
The fact that, once again, it was made by the geniuses at Squaresoft meant that it was almost certainly a good game. That’s why I had to try it again. The different skills that the two main characters have also means that you get a variation in gameplay depending on who you are controlling!
1. Brave Fencer Musashi
And so we come to the end of yet another list of PSX RPGs, and we are ending with both another Squaresoft game and another action RPG. Considering how I’ve been saying that I didn’t really get action RPGs as a kid, it is funny how many of them I now really enjoy playing. It almost feels like I wasted my time as a kid
Especially when it comes to Brave Fencer Musashi. You see, whilst I loved anime covers, Brave Fencer Musashi’s cover just looked too childish for the young me. I wanted to play adult games, to prove that I wasn’t a kid anymore. It’s funny how I regret that now; I missed out on some amazing games.
Brave Fencer Musashi is an action RPG which a very interesting art-style and gameplay that, honestly, does remind me of the Legend of Zelda quite a bit. It’s not a Zelda clone, per se, but definitely has similar vibes in terms of base gameplay. What makes it stand out, however, is the twin sword combat system of the game. One sword is simply a sword, whilst the other can be imbued with magic.
This creates a novelty to combat, which makes the constant killing of enemies a lot more fun than it sounds.
And That’s All Folks
There goes yet another list of PSX RPGs that everyone should play. If you are a fan of RPGs and haven’t tried any of these out (or the others listed here, here and here) then you really ought to go and do yourself a favour; play these games!
Are you an RPG fan? Are there any games you want for yourself? Let me know in the comments below.

My Top 7 RPG Series That Aren’t Final Fantasy
It’s no real secret that I love the Final Fantasy games! I mean, the first game that I finished on stream was Final Fantasy VIII. Final Fantasy Tactics is my third favourite game of all time as well. But, let’s all be honest; the series gets discussed so much that it really does overshadow other RPG series out there.
After all, there is a metric tonne of RPGs out in the wild for you to enjoy. So, for today’s post, I wanted to put the spotlight on my top 7 RPG series that aren’t Final Fantasy! So, let’s get to it, shall we?
7. Chrono
We are going to start off this list with another Square series; the Chrono games. Now, I was torn between whether to put Star Ocean, Valkyria Chronicles or the Chrono games here
However, I didn’t really enjoy the newer Star Ocean games, and whilst Valkyria Chronicles was amazing, the series quickly went downhill (and I haven’t played the newest one yet). So, when I actually thought about the fact that we are looking at the series as a whole, the Chrono games come out on top.
Chrono Trigger is well known for being one of the best RPGs ever made, whilst Chrono Cross generally doesn’t get anywhere near enough love. These two games are both masterpieces in their own right, with deep and confusing storylines, plus great combat. Personally, I prefer Chrono Cross myself, but I am more than willing to admit that I am weird.
6. The Forgotten Realms
Next up, we have the Forgotten Realms series of games. This series includes but is not limited to Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale. All of the games are great Dungeons and Dragons video games by themselves, but when you add them together and look at the campaign setting, they are even better! The alignment system is brilliantly implemented, and the combat feels amazing unique.
The stories, which are incredibly important for any RPG, are well presented as well. There are certainly a few negative points, and some of the games will test your patience with the sheer amount of character customisation as you progress, but I love them all the same!
5. Lunar
Another series that is very close to my heart is the Lunar series of games. The series started out on the MegaCD with Lunar: The Silver Star, before getting a sequel called Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. These games were then loving remastered and ported to the PlayStation, which is where I first experienced them. These versions were called Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. Since then, the games have been remastered and ported multiple times, showing just how beloved the games really are.
The animated cutscenes and voice acting help to bring the characters to life, and whilst the older versions of the game were certainly challenging, you would find yourself so enthralled that you would just keep trying. There’s also a decent splash of humour in the games as well, to make sure that it isn’t always dark in tone.
4. Dot Hack
Anime is incredibly popular; that is a pretty redundant statement these days. However, when I was growing up that wasn’t really the case. Instead, anime was something that you were bullied for enjoying. This was also true during my teenage years as well, so when I found the anime .hack//SIGN and really enjoyed it, I didn’t really mention it to anyone. That’s a shame really, because I probably could have gotten more people to both watch the anime and then play the first set of PS2 games.
These games are pseudo-MMORPGs. You can “log in” to the game to play, or “log out” and read emails from other “players” or chat with them on a forum. The developers did an amazing job at creating the world around the MMO featured in the game, as well as making the pseudo-MMO portions of the game feel realistic too. The combat is simple to pick up but takes time to master, and the trade system with other “players” is genius. Admittedly, the game’s levels aren’t much to look at in terms of beauty and uniqueness, but everything else in the games makes up for that!
3. Wild Arms
When I was a kid, if you had told me that a J-RPG series that mixes demons, magic and Spaghetti Westerns together would end up being one of my favourites, I would have laughed so hard you’d think I was crazy. Yet, here we are, talking about Wild Arms. The first time I played Wild Arms was shortly after completing Final Fantasy VII for the first time. I was looking for my next big J-RPG to sink my teeth into and spotted it on a shelf in Blockbusters. It looked intriguing, and since it was a rental, I was more than happy to give the game a try.
Since that day, I’ve played the large majority of the Wild Arms games, were 2nd Ignition being my favourite in the series. Sadly, the Wild Arms games never really sold well in the States or Europe, meaning that the series effectively died (with the exception of the recent Mobile game). This means that the games can be pretty expensive these days. However, I would definitely say that they are worth it!
2. Megami Tensei
The penultimate entry in this of a great RPG series that aren’t Final Fantasy has to go Megami Tensei. I recently said on Twitter that I rate Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy at the same level in terms of my “RPG love”. Both series are absolutely massive, with Megami Tensei featuring all sorts of takes on the RPG gameplay. The most famous sub-series of Megami Tensei is the Persona games. Persona 3, 4 and 5 launched Megami Tensei into the limelight far more.
However, I still prefer the original PlayStation Persona games, as well as Lucifer’s Call on the PS2. But you know what? The greatest thing about Megami Tensei is the developers were always finding new ways to add customised designs and a wonderful look & feel. This style and design of Megami Tensei games have become synonymous with the series, showing how much the developers care about the franchise as a whole.
1. Shadow Hearts
And so we come to the final entry in tonight list; the Shadow Hearts games. These are some of the darkest RPG make in history, dealing with loss, suicide and much more. The games, despite their comical nature, can create some really dark and lasting memories. There are so many events in the games that will forever be stuck in my head, like the tale of Li Li or the way in which Shadow Hearts 2 ends.
Starting with my favourite game of all time, Koudelka, the series hits the ground running when it comes to dealing with dark tones. From there, with the first Shadow Hearts, your very first town that you reach turns out to be run by a bunch of cannibals who then switch into being demons. Oh, and the opening video is incredibly violent, with soldiers getting sliced apart and the hero getting his arm cut off but reattaching it. So yeah, Shadow Hearts is definitely one of the darkest yet strangely comical RPG series I have played.
But that’s not all. The characters are all really well developed and the story is surprisingly good. The translation of the first game isn’t great, as to be expected, and the graphics haven’t really held up well, but the series overall is most certainly worth your time.
And That’s All Folks
Those were my top 7 RPG series that aren’t Final Fantasy. The top 2 of them might have been obvious for those who have read this for a while, but that’s only because both of the series deserved a lot more attention that they received.
What are your favourite RPG series? Let me know in the comments below!

How to Heal After a Bad Hospital Experience
Except for births, hospitals are usually places of pain. They are where people are most likely to die, or where they go when their health takes a turn for the worse. Ask most people, and they would say they hate being there, that they hate the smell or the lights, or they had a less-than-pleasant experience.
Hospitals, however, are also a place of hope. You go with the hope you will get better, or that a loved one makes it out of surgery. They are the last resort when your health goes awry, which is why having a bad hospital experience should never stop you from seeking out the help you need. A misdiagnosis can be fatal, yes, but by following this guide, you can better heal so that when your health requires a doctor yet again, you are willing to go.
Claim the Compensation You Deserve
Financial compensation can be used to pay for private healthcare, non-NHS funded therapies, premium tools, and can help cover income loss. It is therefore non-negotiable. If you were the victim of medical negligence, then you need to contact The Medical Negligence Experts before the three year claims limit runs out.
Sign Up For Counselling or Therapy
Trauma is trauma. It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like you are on the same page as someone who has been to war; you can still be affected by symptoms of PTSD. That is why when you have had a bad hospital experience, you should sign up for one or more of the following therapies:
1. Counselling
Counselling or visiting a psychologist essentially means going somewhere to talk about your problems. Having someone listen and care is powerful and is a significant first step when it comes to getting help and moving on.
2. Psychiatry
The main difference between a counsellor or a psychologist and a psychiatrist is that the former two cannot prescribe medication. They are not medical doctors, after all, so if your PTSD or mental health needs medical interference, then you will need to find a psychiatrist.
3. Support Groups
Support groups are great for meeting up with people who have gone through a similar experience and healing together. You will find great listeners, a great support system, and great advice at a support group.
Find the Right Combination of Treatments for You
There is no right way to overcome trauma, and there is no timeline. For some, behavioral therapy might be the ticket; for others, it might be a combination.
Medical Treatment
Medical treatment from medication to surgeries can be crucial to help your body re-set and heal.
Mental Health Treatment
Mental health treatment that doesn’t involve medication can be a great way to work through how you are feeling and even overcoming triggers and negative emotions.
Holistic Treatment
Holistic or creative therapies like music therapy can be great to help you express yourself and give you a good outlet for your emotions.
How to Learn to Trust Doctors Again
Healing and moving on from a bad hospital experience does not mean you need to trust doctors blindly. In fact, you will likely have a hard time even setting foot in a hospital or doctor’s office again if that was the case. Instead, know that you have a few rights when it comes to your health. If you don’t feel that your symptoms are being taken seriously, go somewhere else. If you were misdiagnosed in the past, then ask for a second or third opinion before starting treatment, and so on.

Father and Son: Fun Hobbies You Can Do Together
Parenting is about leadership- teaching your child right from wrong, putting them on the best path for the future and encouraging their hopes and dreams. However, great parenting also includes friendship, a chance to connect with and bond with your child- it can help you to understand them in a completely different way. And what better way to get to know the little person you’re raising than to enjoy some hobbies with them, develop interests together and build that positive history that they’ll look back on when they’re adults and smile. Here are some ideas.
A sport or active hobby
Kids need plenty of activity to keep them fit and well, and most of us adults could do with getting more of it as well. So why not get involved in an active hobby that you can enjoy with your son, you’ll get your exercise in but will be having so much fun it won’t feel like a chore. You could try out a father/ son team sport, see if there are any cricket, football or basketball teams locally that offer this. You could play one- on- one, or take up a sport like tennis or badminton. If you’re both beginners you could book some lessons, or if you already have a sport you’re good at it’s an opportunity to pass on your skills. You could go swimming every weekend, go to the trampoline park and mess around or go on long hikes with your dog. This would be a chance to chat, take photographs, go bird watching or just take in the scenery as you go.
Gaming
Not all hobbies have to be especially productive. Sometimes you just want to kill some time and have fun without an end product in mind. Gaming is great for this, it’s accessible (no need to leave the house!) can be done in bad weather, any time of day that you’re free. Gaming might get a bit of a bad rap, but there’s a place for it within a healthy routine. As long as your kids aren’t doing it as a substitute for exercise, socialising or learning then what’s the harm if they enjoy it? There are loads of age-appropriate games you can play with your kids, and it can even be another way to add a dimension to a hobby you already have together. For example, if you love to play football, go to football matches and watch it on tv, a game of Fifa together every now and again could be a lot of fun. You get that competitive element, and there are even additional elements you could bring in like igvault’ fifa coins to trade players.
Camping
Camping and getting outdoors is a great way to spend time together, and there’s plenty of skills you can pass onto your son. From pitching a tent to building a campfire, orienteering using a compass and map reading- the list is endless. Now that the warmer weather is approaching, it’s a great time to get out there and enjoy some fun father/ son time.

Pokémon Stadium: 20 Years Later Still A Great Game To Play With Friends
If during your childhood, you dreamt to be a professional PokĂ©mon trainer, then the right school for you learn the basics about it it’s with Professor Oak in the Lab of PokĂ©mon Stadium. This strategy battling video game of Nintendo64 was released in Japan in 1999, 20 years ago. Feels like a long time, doesn’t it?
With a main focus in the battling, without a storyline, as opposed to the main games of this series, Pokémon Stadium gives you a free ride of what is the sensation of reaching the podium of the elite trainers defeating not only the gym leaders of the portable games but also four specific tournaments.
Choosing a set of 6 pocket monsters, you and your adversary need to pick up three each battle, which turns the gameplay more exciting and less predictable. Even so, each opponent trainer has one beloved type of PokĂ©mon, as it’s used to be, but not every challenge is an easy going. It’s really important to master every type of moves, either physical or special attacks hits, to neutralize the enemy qualities.
This is necessary since, in the tournaments, opposite to portable PokĂ©mon games, they have some specific rules about levels that restrict the advantage that the main games give you in the battlefields. Besides that, here the PokĂ©mon’s don’t evolve, and you can’t change the moves of them.
Nonetheless, don’t worry! Professor Oak has the solution for you! With a transfer pack plugged in your controller, you can look inside of his laboratory, where you will find a lot of useful resources that will help in this journey. As per example:
you can check the PokĂ©dex of the PokĂ©mon’s first generation which displays in the map the localization, the level and the rarity where the wild PokĂ©mon’s appear;
you can see the PokĂ©mon’s in 3D effect and what was the innovation of that time in the console’s world;
check the individual stats, reorganize your boxes stores and items;
see in one compact list the moves of all PokĂ©mon’s and the genre of them and even in this place, you can make a trade with your friends.
By this way, it will be easier to beat the Elite 4 after the normal gym leaders and, if you are able to find some codes that give you a legendary monster, then you should, because you will need them to defeat the powerful Mewtwo. Once you beat him, you unlock a harder mode to be played.
With a fast rhythmic of game, without long speeches, it’s really easy to enjoy the personification that the game gives you with the orchestrated epic beat music. Meanwhile, the pundit describes your energetic and battle talent, putting you on the pressure of being the next Kanto champion.
After collecting the trophies, you still have time for the lighter fun that the game offers you in the mini game area. As like Mario Party features, is funnier if you find a friend and challenge each other with up to four competitors.
You can also take some snaps of PokĂ©mon’s in different backgrounds and after that, you can even print them. This functionality brings us back, like a crossover, to the early published game, PokĂ©mon Snap, also for Nintendo64.
While many fans might believe we are flogging a dead horse the truth is that this game still is much fun to play with. Besides bringing back epic rivalries with our friends, given by the big retro feeling, it is still common today to see the nostalgia in online forums reclaiming for the continuation of the franchise or a remake on Nintendo Switch.
This game was making, not surprising, a great income until it stopped the production in 2003. It sold almost five and half millions of copies and consolidated not only a special place in the gamers heart but also a great rank in the gaming websites as per example 8,2 points in IGN or 8 points in Nintendolife.
