for the “A fell first, B fell harder” trope, who is A and who is B for violetshipping? both options are good in different ways imo
Very true. I can see either of them being A and B.
I think the more popular answer is probably Jou as A and Kaiba as B. It's Jou thinking he has no chance with Kaiba for all kinds of reason, because Kaiba's a better duelist, richer and smarter than him, and not always the kindest to him. Maybe thinks of Kaiba as not good for him, until Kaiba can demonstrate that he's matured or can treat Jou better. When that happens though, it probably dooms Jou and deepens his crush. But he's so used to suppressing it that trying to ignore his growing feelings is second nature. Whereas Kaiba will probably look at Jou one day and realize "shit, I like him." But Kaiba being the sort of all-in guy that he is will lean completely into the new realization. He's canonically a guy that just goes for what he wants, and that's Jou in this case.
Funny enough, I think more fics back in the day followed the Kaiba as A and Jou as B formula. I've lost count of all the fics where that leaned very heavily into the notion that Kaiba mocked Jou because he had feelings for him (schoolyard pull on your crush's pigtail behavior). Thus, Kaiba has been nursing these romantic feelings and crush for Jou for the longest time before something snaps/changes where he reveals said feelings to Jou. Like when he rescues Jou from his father's abuse or someone else start to show romantic interest and pursue Jou. That generally forces Kaiba to show his hand. In those cases, when Jou falls harder, it's demonstrated through acts of nearly self-sacrifice, which canon because uhhh we all remember Battle City, but not always written in such a way that's my cup of tea. Probably because it needs more reckless machismo and less weepy uke "I'm not good enough for him" vibes.
