A Romanian Jewish, Renée Perle (1904-1977) moved to Paris and became a model for the couturier Doeuillet. In 1930, she met the French photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue while strolling in a Parisian street. Nicknaming her the ‘parasol’ as she was slightly hidden by her elegant accessory, he immediately fell in love with the striking dark beauty and both began a passionate relationship that would last two years. Ravishingly beautiful, tall, chic and photogenic, Renée Perle became the photographer’s favourite model and the muse of his most beautiful portraits that diffused the feel of a charming yet mysterious woman. She was also incredibly avant-garde in her fashion taste: the 'kittenish Parisian coquette’ according to John Galliano wore modern boyfriend t-shirts and tanks with loose crisp trousers along armfuls of bangles. Little is known about Renée Perle, following the couple’s separation in 1932 – only remain the depictions of their two-year eternal vacation between Cannes, Juan-les-Pins and Biarritz and the muse’s numerous self-portraits illustrating an almost manic obsession in painting her own face over and over, like an urge to retain her past glory.

It happens to all of us: after making fantasies for ourselves for weeks and years believing that we are thinking logically,
one day we see something, a face, a dress, a happy man, and suddenly we understand that none of our dreams will come true.
