How to Prepare for Coronary Angioplasty
A coronary angioplasty procedure is an atherosclerosis treatment that helps open the blocked or narrowed coronary arteries to restore blood flow to the heart muscle. For a Heart treatment hospital in Delhi, a coronary angioplasty requires a stent placement to keep the artery open. Coronary angioplasty is a type of heart catheterization procedure, also known as a percutaneous coronary intervention. Though it is not major heart surgery, it does involve an incision to place the catheter inside the arm or leg. After the surgery, you may be asked to stay in the hospital overnight for a shorter recovery period. Here are the tips to prepare yourself for the procedure:
1. Stop smoking.
If you have been smoking, now is the time to put it behind you. One recent study exhibited that people who quit smoking had better outcomes after angioplasty. After the procedure, they are less likely to feel chest pain than those who continue to smoke. Try to stop smoking before your angioplasty. Your body will heal faster afterwards, and you can celebrate your success and quit smoking for good!
2. Talk about your medicines.
Talk with your doctor about all your medicines before your angioplasty. In addition to your prescriptions, discuss all over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal treatments with your doctor. Before the procedure, your doctor may want you to stop some of these medicines. You will be asked to stop some of them for several days beforehand. Also, medicines, including anticoagulants and diabetic medicines containing metformin, will have to be stopped. Obey your doctor's instructions for which medicine you have to take and which one to stop.
3. Follow food and drink restrictions.
Before your angioplasty, your health provider team will give you instructions for eating and drinking. Generally, you will not eat or drink anything for six to 8 hours before the procedure. If you eat or drink too close to your procedure time, then you may be required to cancel and reschedule it. It is usually done to avoid complications with anaesthesia, and therefore it is for your safety purpose. You can also ask your care team about taking the medicines the morning of your procedure. If the care team has prescribed some medicines you need to take, it is usually okay with water sips.
4. Prepare a list of your medicines and allergies.
On the day of your angioplasty, Coronary Angiography Hospital in Delhi has a team that will again review your medical history. The team will want to know your medicines' exact doses, whether your allergies or herbal medicines. the doctor will decide whether you should continue with your current amounts or adjust them afterwards. If you do not get time to prepare this list, you can bring the medicine bottles on the procedure day.
5. Arrange a ride home.
After the angioplasty, you won't be able to drive yourself home. In most cases, people have to stay overnight in the hospital after the procedure. Ask any family member or friend to be with you at the time of your procedure and drive you afterwards.
