The success and downfall of institutions like nations greatly depend on their leaders. The ABS-CBN shutdown shows that the failures of its founders in leading responsibly led to the administration's response of stopping the operations of the network.
The question is, did the administration give a fair and just fight to ABS- CBN, or did it abused its power and served as the supreme ruler of the nation?

The Humorist with a Good Heart
Tumblr media
Our country has a lot of great writers who gave significant contributions to the history of Philippine Literature. Through their inspiring works, they have provided timeless lessons and values in life, knowledge, and skills that today's generations could use to build better lives in the present and the future. Among those precious gems of Philippine literature, one that I truly consider remarkable is Alejandro "Anding" Reyes Roces, a Manila-born playwright, essayist, dramatist, journalist, and short-story writer whose works center on the ordinary lives of Filipinos. The culture and characteristics of Filipinos are depicted and reflected in most of his writings. I admire him the most because of his exceptional undaunted love of the country. In all his statements and writings, he focused his attention and time on giving life again to Filipino culture that had been slowly forgotten. He always wanted to give recognition to Filipinos’ cultural heritage and preserve it for the next generations.
Roces was better known as the country’s best writer of humorous comic short stories in English. It was in his freshman year in Arizona when he became a writer. He wrote his first story at the university, “We Filipinos Are Mild Drinkers,” which won a literary award as Best Short Story from the University of Arizona. From then on, he had won other awards and his stories have been published in several American magazines. He then also became the first Filipino writer who had been featured in the Pacific Spectator. Another of his stories, “My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken," painted a portrait of a Filipino as a noble person endowed with innate intelligence, patience, and compassion. It was listed as Martha Foley's Best American Stories among the most distinctive. Roces made his way through great achievements in journalism, literature, and arts. He attained several doctorate degrees: Literature at Toyo University, Japan; Arts and Letters at Polytechnic University of the Philippines; Humane Letters at Ateneo de Manila University; and Humanities at St. Louis University in Baguio City.
He also published books, one of these is “Of Cocks and Kites”(1959) which earned him recognition as the country's best writer of humorous stories. It also had the widely anthologized piece “My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken”. Another of his best-known books is “Fiesta”(1980), a book of essays featuring folk festivals such as Marinduque’s Moriones, Aklan's Ati-atihan, and Naga's Peñafrancia. It showed the uniting significance of the fiesta and brought to public attention the aesthetics of Philippine festivals. A collection of Roces’ short stories, “Something to Crow About”(2005) has been adapted for a stage play of the same title that opened the UNESCO Theater Congress in 2006, the first international theatre festival to be held in the Philippines. The staged version of the said book is the first Filipino zarzuela in English. This modern zarzuela won the Aliw Award for Best Musical and Best Director for a Musical Production. It also had a run off-Broadway at the La Mama Theater in New York and other key cities in the US.
Alejandro "Anding" is one of the notable Roceses in the fields of journalism and literature. In the year 2000, in an article made by the Philippine Star, he was included in the World's Who's Who, a biographical list of the highest achievers and contributors around the world. The Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Honors for the Arts in 1999 also gave Roces a citation for his priceless contributions to the field of cultural dissemination, thus, granting him the "Parangal Sentenyal sa Sining at Kultura." Through the years, he had won numerous awards, including the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award, the Diwa ng Lahi Award, the Tanging Parangal of the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining, and the Rizal Pro Patia Award. He was finally awarded the honor of the National Artist of Literature in 2003.
Under former President Diosdado Macapagal, Roces served as Education Secretary. He led the campaign and properly moved the Philippines' Independence Day from July 4 to June 12. As Education Secretary and an advocate of bio-cultural diversity, he was able to recover the lost manuscripts of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, and Mi Ultimo Adios. He also caused the change of language from English to Filipino in the country’s stamps, currency, passports, and diplomas. While serving as Dean of College of Arts and Sciences at the Far Eastern University, he was recognized for convincing poet Jose Garcia Villa, the first National Artist for Literature, to come home after decades of self-exile in New York City to teach at the said campus.
Roces became a powerful influence on the literature field and also made contributions not only to the aspect of literature but also in the field of art. His works were published in various magazines around the world, and have received numerous national and international awards that gave honor to our country. With his patriotism, through his writings, he became an inspiration to many Filipinos. Because of the pleasure he had added to the culture of the Philippine arts, he was able to depict how beautiful our culture is. His stories and creations had become the way of introducing new hope to the Filipino nation. With all his wholehearted service to his fellow Filipinos and his country, it was no doubt that he was unequaled by anybody.
In 2011, at the age of 86, Alejandro “Anding” Roces had fulfilled his role as a cultural demonstrator and an educational innovator. He may have left us and made the local arts and culture community mourned but the lessons he instilled in our hearts and our minds will always remain and forever be remembered. All the things he had done, clearly reflected how a true Filipino should live. I learned from him that humor can bring positivity to one’s life and that we should always love and serve our country. When once asked for a piece of advice on becoming a famous literary figure, he didn’t just advise writers like him or the aspiring ones, but he also gave a precious piece of advice for everyone on what really matters in life. He said, "You cannot be a great writer; first, you have to be a good person," which only means that before anything else, goodness in one’s heart should always come first.

The Youth of Today's Generation
Tumblr media
Vernon Law once said, “Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterward.” This quote would best fit as advice for the new generation of children today for it is a fundamental truth of life. We can’t deny it, and there is no way of escaping it. As long as people live, they will continue to do things that will only make them regret in the end. Thus, young people need to be guided in making personal wise decisions that will help them to have a happy, peaceful, and unregretful life.
The youth of today’s generation have many expectations in life. They are so idealistic and they want to prove that they are independent and can be on their own without adult guidance and supervision. Young people especially teenagers are too curious to experience adventures in life and they tend to be very impulsive and lack self-control. Most of them prefer to enjoy gains today rather than the profit later and choose instant but smaller rewards over delayed but larger ones. That is why they seem to risk going too far and end up in situations that they could perhaps have avoided with a little forethought.
In our society, today’s generation seems to have a character or personality trend. Most of them don't mind whether there had been any moral issue involved in their way of life, they just do whatever makes them happy. They are in fast decision-making and require quick satisfaction. They cannot wait and will never wait. Part of their everyday lives is having constant connectedness. They are too attached to their devices, especially mobile phones. Also, they have been observed to have short attention spans so they are easy to distract and hard to engage. They also can't focus on something because they have a lot of things in their mind. The young ones are the most susceptible to social influence, they easily believe and accept everything that has been said to them. They are too vulnerable to resist following bad advice that may hinder their happiness and success in life. Thus, wise decision-making is what they needed most especially that they have a massive problem with the environment that surrounds them. They may have made some very bad decisions but they need to learn from these experiences to improve their way of living.
The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a crucial but vulnerable period when young people take their first steps toward independence and begin exploring their new role as adults. This is the time an individual undergoes self-discovery to accept oneself and others. They go through obstacles of challenges and before they can reach those peaks of exhilarating self-discovery, there are complicated mazes to navigate. This is where they can experience difficulties especially relating to the major decisions that will greatly affect their lives. This is the time when serious mental disorders can begin to manifest and the temptation to use drugs and alcohol is enhanced by newfound freedom and peer pressure. As they go through, many may have tried drinking alcohol, others may have taken an illegal drug, and some may have used a prescription drug for non-medical purposes.
During the complicated period of adolescence, a conflict between children and parents often occurs. They often struggle with the changing dynamics of family relationships in this phase. But parents are still critical support throughout this point. The adolescent years can desire to ride a roller coaster. By maintaining positive and respectful parent-child relationships during this period, the family can also try to enjoy the ride! But not to the point that they will tolerate their children of unacceptable wrongdoings like engaging in different vices and crimes that may destroy their children’s life. Most of the time children insist on what they want, parents just give in to their demand enabling them to keep on learning how to make good decisions, gathering the life experiences that teach them that it is often better to delay rewards and wait. So even if the teenager does something parents view as reckless, they still give them some space and pause to reflect on this new understanding. It helps to explain why they seem to live for today rather than wait for tomorrow.
The family plays a very important role in human development. It is in the family that a child experience what love is, how it is to be loved, and what it means to love. It is at home where different values were first learned that help a child become a responsible member of the family. A child needs to have a good home. It is the start of a good person. The way children are nurtured by their parents has a great impact on the way they behave and make decisions about their own life. Life is a series of events and choices and it's up to us to make the decisions and be thankful for the good ones and to learn from bad ones. Whether expected or unintended, there will always be consequences. It is up to us to find out our lessons. Sometimes, we have days once we get everything wrong. But always be reminded that whatever we do, it is important that we always carry integrity and do the right thing even when no one is looking. If something can’t be done with someone watching, ask yourself why. A disciplined person will be disciplined without being told to, wherever he goes and even if nobody is around.
At the end of the day, it is we who shape ourselves and our lives. The choices we make are our responsibility. We have to instill in our mind and heart the values of courage, determination, and fortitude to overcome life's challenges. Unfortunately, there are no tried and true methods to escape living with them, we must constantly learn by trial and error. This is an inevitable truth. In life, whatever we do will have corresponding consequences on ourselves and the people around us. So, it's up to us whether we want to live our life meaningfully and fruitfully. "Wise persons know what is best for their lives and avoid what will destroy their being."

Sharing Words of God | PHILIPPIANS 4:13
Tumblr media
It's crazy how it's been 7 months into quarantine. We are now all prisoners of this pandemic situation. Our lives have been affected in so many ways. Everything has changed. We have been struggling to find ways on how to deal with the “new normal” way of living. We see and experience so much suffering on many levels for so many people. Through this experience, I have come to realize a deep sense of gratitude for God, for the life that He has given me, for my loved ones, families and friends, and for everything that I have. I become more faithful to Him, I pray prayers, and I believe that all things are possible to those who believe in Him.
In any circumstance that I am in, I am still able to do what God wants for me to do because it is God who graciously gives the strength that I need. I may be in prison of this pandemic situation right now but I am at peace. I am content in any or in every situation life may bring because God is with me. Regardless of what life throws at me, God will enable me to go through it.
God is a sustainer when life feels unsustainable. He is better than what we’ve imagined because He gives us what we actually need: strength to survive and to be content when we are facing these moments in life. With the help of God, I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” - Philippians 4:13
Reflect and pray! He will always listen to those who believe in Him. Nothing is impossible with God!
