"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.

re: pop culture references in this book - simons family being super intense about the bachelorette is a fun detail, its a great way to show us family dynamics and personalities.l (like having simons dad call one of the guys gayer than a parade) but shoehorning in "i havent eaten chick fil a in a while because theyre mean to GAY PEOPLE" is so... not it.

like maybe its hypocritical of me given (gestures broadly) but i get uh embarrassed when real life books mention fanfiction like that.
simon vs the homo sapiens agenda simply did not need to mention yaoi or drarry fic. like i'm embarrassed reading this.

plus honestly there are ways to show setting and familiarity without being like "hello my childhood best friend, did you listen to the new taylor swift album?". i'd rather an author make up a book or celebrity or slang term to use bc we can get what they mean to the characters without needing it to be 100% grounded in the real world.
i do think something a lot of YA books get wrong is trying to be Relatable to their audience by referencing relevant pop culture, bc i feel like thats a fast track to your book aging terribly, but if you actually focus on the feelings and experiences of your characters, thats way more relatable and timeless.
