I have a question regarding how you draw.

How do you draw boys' mouths without making mistakes? I try, but they always come out weird or I don't like the way they look.

Do you have a model or do you watch the series over and over again until you find the perfect mouth?

So mouths are very fun in the Rise style! I will say, studying as many screenshots as you can will massively help, Ive watched the show so much that I don’t really need to look up references for expressions, and if I go off model I don’t much mind. And sometimes I’ll draw and erase over and over until I get the exact look I want. It really is just practice, practice, practice!

But just a few quick tips that I personally try to stick to!

Most of the turtles have this little Z on the prominent side (whichever side they’re facing), then the middle of their upper lip has an curve or arch. This will typically (but not always!) be a consistent starting point, no matter what expression you’re doing. Next, adding little creases and dimples on the sides can help make various expressions stronger. For teeth, I tend to keep them very simple, unless they are clenched, then I’ll have some fun with making them sharp and adding a few small peaks of gum showing. Less detail is usually better when drawing sets of teeth, unless you are going for comedic realism—in that case more details can add a humorous note to an angry expression.

Don’t be afraid to make the mouth or eyes bigger or smaller than they should be. If they take up more space or get mushed closer together, it can really help push the feeling you want to convey. Truthfully, as long as it looks good as a whole, things can shift off your guidelines. Squash and stretch are a huge staple of cartooning, and you don’t need to adhere so strongly to following realistic feature placement, as long as it makes enough sense, looks good, and it gets your point across.

May continue to not write for a while, life stuff is getting really hard, adulting is crushing my soul and I'm just-- anyway. Not to bore you with my scars.

ruins the sense of community

can't tell at a glance who's online right now and what they're interested in

literally cannot tell without scrolling back up who put a post on my dash if it has a single addition attached to it. or like. 2 paragraphs in the op.

i cant click my own icon at the top of the dash to quickly view my own blog

can't tell who someone used to be if they change their username

squashes the margins between the menu and posts, making the whole dash feel more cramped

ruins the quick visual cue of how long each post is and where it ends when you're trying to scroll past ones youve seen before

people put a lot of creativity and individuality into icons, and now i never see them

makes people who primarily reblog instead of make their own posts all but completely disappear

And most of the fans Doesn't see him as all serious which guess what THATS his plan all along to be underestimated. Then Boom This turtle actually won and can read you like a book he just doesn't show it. He acts dumb to make sure people see him as dumb That's what he wants.

Because when people don't take him seriously He will Win and be one step ahead of you. I was writing up a post to help encourage folks who’ve always wanted to start a webcomic to dive in- and that they shouldnt have to fear ‘being perfect’ to start one And as I was going along, it made me sad to realise that.. there is an expectation now in the webcomic sphere, as much as I want to deny it (and that it should NOT stop folks from creating!!! please keep creating, no matter your level) I’m bummed out about the changes in the webcomic sphere over the past 5 years, i’m disappointed that there has been changes to this medium that was KNOWN for all of the different skill levels and flavours of so many different creators. I want to combat that. I want to see more beginner art, I want to see that excitment and embracing of growth. I want to see what made webcomics so accessible to so many creators and readers flourish again. Hopefully, if you see this post, and you’ve always wanted to make a webcomic but felt you weren’t ‘good enough’ : Make one anyways. Have fun even if you don’t know all the ‘ins and outs’ of comics. Make one because you’re obsessed with your characters and you wanna share them with the world. Make one just because you can, and not because it has to fit in some impossible standard we’ve forced onto ourselves because of the changing landscape. Start one, and have fun doing it for YOU!
