FGP - packaging
After looking at, trying out and discussing the many different versions of packaging prototypes I have worked on refining the chosen version. I also tried adding the graphics using adhesive paper. I first tried wrapping the paper around the corners to hide the cardboard edges but this did not work very well at all. It was very messy and didn’t stick to the cardboard very well, it also started to crease and come undone as I was working on it. So for the second try I cut the sticker paper the exact size of the cardboard prototype and applied it on one side at a time. This method worked a lot better. It went on smoother and looked a lot better.
First attempt with the adhesive paper
second attempt - more successful
the triangular packaging has been a challenge. The triangular shape and angles make every little detail more difficult than if it was a square or rectangular shape. It has been a pain figuring out how to make it work and trying so many different versions of it. From changing bigger things to small details, it been a trial and error process that is finally starting to feel like it is paying off. I have had to brush off my geometry skills and become much better at making prototypes, drawing templates and logically thinking about the packaging and how to produce it in the best way.

Visualise:
I wake up around 7 am and take my dog for a walk. Then I have my breakfast in my apartment in London while updating myself on any news that I’ve missed while asleep. I get ready for the day and head out the door. I take the tube to work which is where I mentally prepare for my working day. Sometimes I travel for work so then I would take a taxi to the airport where I meet up with my colleagues and fly off to whatever destination work brings us to that time. Most days I just head to the design studio where I meet my colleagues and have a little chat before we start our busy day or designing and creating. I work at a design studio that specialises in print and editorial design but sometimes we also work on branding and other exciting projects. No two projects or work days are the same which makes the job exciting every day.
The atmosphere in the design studio is friendly and creative. Everyone that works there are friends and someone is always cracking a joke. Everyone is very hardworking and helpful because everyone knows the team cannot work without everyone helping each other out. After a little chat with my colleagues I head over to my workspace which is an organised chaos. Since I am working on multiple projects at once I have lots of sketches, mockups and notes spread around my workspace to keep me on track with my work. I am also surrounded by lots of color, pattern and images that inspire me and remind me of my goals and how far I have come. This keeps me motivated.
The first thing I do when I get to my workspace is check my emails and answer them in order of importance and urgency. After finishing my emails I start to work on one of my current projects. I am currently working on an editorial project, a branding project for a start up business and a project for a music festival. The music festival project is very exciting and a dream project for me. It is my favourite project that I’m currently working on because it allows me to combine my love for music and live music with design. Before I know it, it’s lunchtime and I head to lunch with a few of my colleagues. After lunch we prepare for a meeting with a new client before heading to the meeting room. A few of my colleagues and I greet the client and listen to their brief. After the meeting my colleagues and I quickly debrief what happened in the meeting and what needs to be done for the project. We delegate tasks and head back to our workspaces where we continue to work.
After a few hours I received the task of writing copy for one of my colleagues, this isn’t my strongest point and out of my comfort zone but of course I will do my best to help them out. After being briefed on what my new task is I start working on it and try to work it out on my own. Whenever I get stuck or run into a problem I ask someone at the studio for help or advice and continue to work on the task until it is complete. I try to look at tasks outside of my comfort zone as a challenge and a chance for me to grow as a persona and as a designer and after completing such a challenge I feel very proud and inspired.
My working day ends around 6pm and after work I grab dinner and drinks with some of my colleagues before I head to a concert with friends. After the concert I head back home where I cuddle with my dog before heading to bed. I go to sleep around midnight so I can wake up early the next day for another busy and fun day at work.
Strategy and Positioning in Week 10
Areas of specialization:
Editorial, print, branding
How have you improved your portfolio:
I have reworked some project slightly, taken better photographs of mockups and made better digital mockups. I have also created a new format for my portfolio (portfolio zine) that suits me better than my previous standard A3 portfolio. I also think the portfolio zine communicates my conceptual design thinking better than my previous portfolio. My final graphic project (branding and packaging for an eyewear brand) has also added packaging and a larger scale branding project to my portfolio.
Are there still weaknesses in your portfolio:
The work in my portfolio is still quite varied but I don’t see it as a weakness like I did a few months ago. I feel that the work and reflection I have done in prof. Comm this semester has made me realise that I don’t necessarily need a very specific and narrow style or direction as a designer right now. I enjoy different areas of graphic design and I have skills in different areas so the varied nature of my work at this point is a good representation of my skill set.
Have you achieved your 3 top goals for this year:
Yes!
My top three goals were:
Become more confident in my ideas/designs and abilities as a designer
I have definitely become more confident in my ideas/designs and abilities as a designer. This semester has made me more aware of my strengths/weaknesses and who I am as a designer which has really helped me with my confidence.
Develop and show/communicate my conceptual design thinking in my portfolio
I think my current personal branding concept and portfolio communicates conceptual design thinking.
Narrow down what I want to specialise in and get to know myself as a designer better
I have definitely found myself and my place as a designer this semester and I am excited to see where I will end up next and how my designs will develop. Prof. Comm has made me look at my work and my abilities in a different way than before and it has made me realise there are so many exciting possibilities out there.
Next steps (Educational and/or professional):
complete my BA degree
finalise my personal branding applications and concept in a way that it can easily be updated and adapted as I grow as a designer
apply for internships/jobs in design studios to gain more experience and knowledge about the industry and to develop my skills as a designer
Experiment and explore new areas of design and develop my skills and style
Name/nickname/company name/other name:
I will just go by my name: Sara Vedeskog
Professional description/tagline:
As of now: I’m an avid concert goer and graphic designer.
Have you achieved your strategic aims:
My strategic aims were:
I need to research the design market and figure out where I fit in, is there a gap in the market?
Brainstorm how I want to promote myself and what I want to achieve from my branding
Research different medias and platforms for personal promotion and decide on which platforms are the best match for what I want to achieve
I will create physical promotional materials but I also need to create an appropriate online presence for myself that conveys my focus on analogue medias, print design, etc.
Yes I have or am well on my way of reaching my strategic aims. I am currently working on my physical promotional applications and simultaneously working on my portfolio website.
Have you positioned yourself correctly?
Yes I think so which makes me very happy to be able to say. At the beginning of the semester I never thought I would get to this point of feeling confident in my positioning and my work. I have created a branding strategy and a promotional concept which really communicates who I am as a designer and how I work while not limiting myself and showing my varied skill set.

Business cards - development
This would be appropriate if printed on colored paper and only use one colored ink.
I also played with other color combinations but it’s too bright and neon. It’s also hard to read. The red and pink works better.
Then I also tried to incorporate the cropped aspect from the posters and visual language.
after discussing the business cards in class I tried other versions of this concept. I tried slightly different layouts and composition of the type.
Digital - GIF
first attempt at gifs for online promotion. I think the cropped portraits and glasses work well together with the block colors for online promotion. It also enhances the visual language and the posters and print applications.
Posters - development
set 1 - portrait
set 2 - portrait + glasses
set 3 - only glasses poster
Print ads - for magazines etc. A5
