My favorite thing about Kazu is how they managed to strike the dichotomy between this almost no-nonsense punk rock man who doesn’t just blindly follow orders
and yet in the intro you can tell that he’s a goofball who’s living his best life as a mecha protagonist who strikes silly poses and uses his comrades as bullet shields during harmless team-building exercises

I don’t usually stan dudes, but I relate heavily to Kazu just wanting to throw down with the enemy in melee combat even if he has a perfectly good gun available
It reminds me of every time a game has said “hey you should totally use this ranged weapon right now” and I just proceeded to punch the 100ft tall behemoth-sized boss in the ankles until it died

Kazu had been more than familiar with people disliking his cooking. But it surprised him that someone, let alone a soldier would outright refuse to eat it and ask him to make something else. Most wouldn’t complain and just eat whatever. And after all he usually only did this for his teammates and others from the Gen:Lock program but today he decided to extend that service to any others who dropped by at that time.
Turning to Laura, Kazu smiled and grabbed a tray and placed it between them. “We got some rice.” As he spoke he grabbed a bowl scooped a large helping of rice into the bowl before placing it on the tray. “Some sausages and tamagoyaki, which is just a rolled up omelette.” Both items were removed from the stove and placed on a plate to be added to her tray. “Enjoy. Drinks are up to you, but there was plenty of stuff in the fridge last I checked.”

Kazu had simply been hanging out and relaxing after a long day when the thrown object suddenly hit Astrid. His eyebrows shot up and mouth opened in surprise when he realized what happened and anticipated her response. However the one she gave was not at all what he expected, and as a result he suddenly burst into laughter once she said it.

Kazu stood next to the Scottish hacker with guitar in hand waiting for her to start slamming the door for the over in the mess hall. After a few beats he started to play the part usually played by a trombone. All the while he was eagerly banging his head to the beat.

A personal interpretation of the Gen:LOCK process
It’s stated in-series that Holons operate by transferring a person’s consciousness into the cyberbrain via Gen:LOCK. This has caused some serious ethical and spiritual questions regarding Chase and Nemesis, such as which, if either/both, is the “real” Julian Chase.
I’ve come to a conclusion on the matter that resolves it rather nicely for me:
I believe Dr. Weller is wrong. Gen:LOCK does not actually transfer the person’s consciousness out of their body into the Holon.
Rather, it makes the Holon an extension of their body, leaving their soul in their physical shell while the neural connections that normally move their body now operate the Holon instead via a simulated consciousness, effectively making being in a Holon a “waking dream” of sorts. Everything you experience while in a Holon is kept in the cyberbrain until such time that it is reuploaded into your physical mind; without the upload, you’d forget everything that happened while controlling the Holon, just as a dream is forgotten upon waking.
Looking at it this way, I’m left to conclude that the prototype Holon being captured wasn’t Chase getting captured so much as having a new limb, one the size of a small building with a simulation of his conciousness in it, cut off. The simulated Chase within is now trapped in a living nightmare, but the “real” Chase, asleep in a waking dream at the time, was still in his body. Uploading the backup copy of his cybermind back into his body to “wake” him effectively amounted to memory manipulation, but in the end this is still the real Julian Chase.
tl;dr The real Chase is, and always was, the guy in the stasis tank. Piloting a Holon is simply akin to a waking dream. Nemesis is simply a nightmare that didn’t end after Chase woke up.
