What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is a literary trope that draws a comparison between two unrelated things to create a vivid image or idea.
Unlike similes, which use "like" or "as" to make comparisons, metaphors directly state that one thing is another. For example “life is a highway,” or “the world is a stage.”

Interview your characters
If you really want to get to know your characters, interview them.
Write out a series of questions (or used a pre-made set, like the Proust Questionnaire) and answer them in your character’s voice. They’ll soon start to develop unique personalities.
