Teenpods: Production of Educational Videos as First Step in a Transmedia Educational Project About Positive Youth Development from IAFOR on Vimeo.
60550
Teenpods is the name of a Transmedia-Educational-Project (TEP) performed by the Chair Education and adolescence from University of Lleida. This project aims to promote the Positive-Young-Development (PYD) approach on educational contexts. It has 11 pods about different topics linked with adolescence. Each Teenpod is set to include several transmedia objects addressed to education practitioners. The first step in each pod design was elaborating an educational video about the selected topic. This communication aims to describe this experience: the elaboration process of Teenpods and the reflection on the followed principles for the design of educational videos as a part of a TEP. Methodologically, transmedia objects have been produced following a Design-Based-Research (DBR), characterized by iterative cycles of analysis, design, development and refinement via tight collaboration among researchers, practitioners and audio-visual producers. Results show that video transmedia objects design process is linked with principles of TEP production: choosing scientific content about educational topics, adapting content to a synthesized and dynamic discourse, taking care of the graphic design and multimedia content, and planning the launching of the final product on the Internet. This study contributes to fill the gap in the literature about TEP to train professionals. It offers guidelines to promote the self-learning processes through transmedia open resources for educational practitioners on the field of Educational Technology. Additionally, it presents an example to promote PYD through video educational objects. Finally, future research is needed to deeply analyse the impact of these resources on the Internet.

New Media
Nowadays, most used platforms by the news media and the advertising and broadcasting ambit professionals are the social media. They use these platforms basically in two ways, which are very beneficial for what they want. Firstly, the audience: Social media have a large potential audience that helps to these professionals and medias to promote or carry on their influence over the society and for advertising professionals from 10 years ago they had to adapt to this new way of communicate since it is the most used and therefore where more people will see their ads, as Markus Pfeiffer and Markus Zinnbauer said in their article Can Old Media Enhance New Media?: “Online advertising [...] generate actual revenues by a conversion rate three times higher than the most efficient”. Secondly, due to the engagement and reciprocity that new media allows (specially Twitter). For example all newspapers have several Twitter accounts that helps their audience to keep updated of the latest news. By way of illustration “USA today”, which own a main account in addition to several accounts such us technology, opinion and etcetera.
Another way that not only old media but also professionals of this ambit use new media is blogs. Currently all medias have blogs for his columnist or reporters. Furthermore most professionals have their own personal blog where they write about their professional experience. Basically these blogs allows its authors to get more audience and increase their social influence, which helps them in to their jobs. A good example is Erik Wample’s blog in “Washington Post”.
I think the most important new media concepts are, Privacy: right of the user to does not share specific content that him does not want to publish. User-created content (copyrights): Rights over the content created by the author to do not allow to publish, modify, etcetera his content. Smartphone: Phone with advances computer ability and connectivity. Augmented Reality: Viewing real life though a device that augment or supplement the real elements by computer generated sensory input. In a nutshell as Tim Folger stated in The Big Idea, “This emerging technology superimposes computer-generated images on the real world”.
Other concepts, Wearable technology: Accessories or clothes, which incorporate computers. And Artificial technology: Human like intelligence shared by the technologies, especially robots or computers. Cyberbulling: the use of new media to harm other people in a deliberate hostile and repeated manner.
Terms about new media, Crowdsourcing: get needed services, ideas or content by soliciting it publicly by the net. Curation and SEO: It is gathering and organizing the information in Internet to be able to show it when people search it. Geolocation: Identify the location of an object internet-connected. Social Networking: Services that allow members to connect with each other fro sharing, collaborating and networking. Podcasts: Digital content consisting in a episodic series of audio, video or PDF, which the public can subscribe and download. Hashtag: word or unspaced phrase that works as a tag. App: Program or software designed to fulfill a particular purpose.
What I think is the most useful new media tool is HootSuite. This Application get together all our social media accounts’ time lines in one screen from we can manage at the same time and it does with a very clean format. Moreover offers the option to schedule our updates, tweets and etcetera. However who would take more advantage of this tool would be professional new media community managers, who have to control the several accounts of his company/association at the same time and in addition should be fast responding his interactions with the other users.
Another is Storify. It basically helps you to create stories from social media content either this content is yours or from other users. Is very useful for old media to explain news happened or shared in the net, for example when some athlete or sports team announces some important new or to gather the opinion of different ordinary people about some event or announcement.
Also is a great tool Pinterest yet is still underrated. It is a social media where its users to organize and share ideas with the community. You can share your content and the content posted by other users. All this content is posted as image or video. Nowadays Pinterest is full of artistic/cultural artifacts (from great pictures, draws and designs to cooking receipts or tattoos) therefore I think that the best use is to get inspiration as well to watch several artistic objects for free. However every day is changing its way to a more commercial concept like Facebook.
Obviously Google Glass is other of this new media tools. They are reality-augmented glasses with a free-hand system that allows the user interact with the real world and new media tools at the same time easily. This wearable technology nowadays is not available for everyone but in the future will be as necessary as the smartphone today. Thus I think the best used for this device will be the ordinary life in the future.
The last new media tool is Blogs. A blog is a website where the author publish some personal thoughts or experiences frequently in wrote format and often including links. The best-used way is to share experience professional or personal since a lot of people have access to Internet, where blogs are a great source of information either in professional ambits or in leisure interests.
After this semester I am a better new media consumer since now I know more tools to use and concepts to apply. Moreover now I am able to create more interesting content because I know how to make visible my content for those who are interested in it. Furthermore I learned how to enrich my content with links or other content already posted for other people embedded in my posts. In new media the best way to create successful content is to create more than one format as Weber Shandwick says in How to Build a Content Framework for New Media Success, “Communicators can no longer publish content in one medium alone. These other mediums are as strategic and essential as the written word. As Apple said in its recent ad: "Now, we can watch a newspaper, listen to a magazine"”.
As I see it, new media have changed our society in great measure. The ambit in which more impact has had is the communication. As Gavin Heaton say in 5 impacts of new media, “New form to of language come into being” and is that not only it has had possible to communicate instantly with other people by voice, text, photos, video, and etcetera but also changed the language adding new words (such as hashtag) changing the meaning of others (like status) but also creating its own Language/slang (could be examples LOL, cre8, deja-tweet, FF).
In addition current society is more democratic since every one can express his opinion through new media and have a considerable audience, and this changed the old balance of political power since now the voter has another power more: influence the other voter easily or even creating groups through these platforms to be stronger. Furthermore, new media changed the way to we consumer, nowadays we are closer to the passing of paper or CD books due to e-books and iTunes/Spotify. And all this changes have forced teachers to teach in other way including new media in their lesson (which is a good example this class). And this fact make that in the future this changes would be greater since my generation already have a different conception of the world and the society due to this huge invention that was new media.

Class evaluation
I value this New Media class in a very positive way. It has helped me to enlarge my presence in the social media (I created accounts on Pinterest, Tumblr or Vine as a result of what I listened in class) in addition it has made me post better content and consequently have more and better engagement with other users in the social networks.
Moreover, I learned to use new media in a more professionaly way although I don’t used it yet. However I am sure that I will use this knowledge in the future since I discovered that I like this type of job.
Furthermore, the use of high technology such as the Google Glass I think that is a very good tool in addition that this type of wearable technology generally is not within our reach.
In a Nutshell, it was an enricher experience that will be very useful for our future jobs.
