#avgeeks, can you guess this aircraft? Hint: It's sometimes described as a cross between a German Bf 109 and an American P-51 Mustang 😗 #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationlovers #WWII

1st April 1939. First flight of the Mitsubishi A6M Reisen (Zero), official Allied codename ‘Zeke’. The aircraft had superb agility and range, at the expense of a lightweight airframe. Improved Allied tactics and aircraft, plus declining Japanese pilot quality, ended its supremacy.
Pictured:
1) A6M2 Zeros in flight, 1942. This variant bore the brunt of early fighting in the Pacific.

2) Captured A6M5 Zero in flight, September 1944. By this stage of the war, the aircraft’s early dominance was long past, though if flown by a skilled pilot, it could still prove a challenge.

3) As with many other Japanese aircraft, Zeroes were pressed into service as kamikaze aircraft. This A6M has been hit by anti-aircraft fire and is about to crash short of the carrier USS Essex in May 1945.
