Working at the sex shop really did rewire my brain. There was basically no topic that was too taboo to talk about, and what little propriety I’d had evaporated. I’d be out walking and chatting with friends about erotica I’d had to read that day only to be shushed and realize people were staring at me.
It always struck me as a little bit silly but I learned to curb myself for others comfort levels. Mostly.
But I have one distinct memory of decorating holiday cookies with my parents and my grandmother. My mom had worked in a sex shop back in her day, and I never hid my line of work from my family, so I was telling a work story.
I was conscious that my dad was slightly more sensitive, so I was using pretty broad descriptions, but I happened to mention silicone lube and my nana asked, “What’s that?”
I went into full sales mode. Focused on the little reindeer cookie I was decorating I started info dumping, “Oh, it’s pretty great. Water based lubricants get absorbed through vaginal mucous membranes, but silicone is too dense and our body can’t absorb it the same way. So once you apply some silicone you never have to worry about chafing, and a little goes a long way. It’s especially popular with older women, because they start producing less natural lubricant and absorb water based lubes so quickly.”
There was a silent beat after this statement.
I looked up.
My mom and grandmother were looking at me with rapt attention, and I belatedly realized I was addressing two older women who probably would welcome extra lubrication.
And then there was my dad, blushing so pink with embarrassment that I thought he was about to faint.
“I can talk about something else,” I offered in apology to my dad.
“Like hell! He can go in the other room, tell me more!” My nana declared. My dad scampered off to busy himself in another room while I answered their questions and talked about brands and pricing.
I slipped them each a small bottle of silicone lube for the holidays.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

okay so there were a ton of posts/fics about the hilarious "fuck/maryy/kill" Bruce Wayne & Justice League scenario (I read them all, amazing comedic timing y'all) but to me, the most hilarious scenario is the JL play fuck/marry/kill, Bruce's name comes up, and half of the people in the room in the know immediately turn bright red and refuse to keep playing and no one will explain why.
Hal: "...and I would fuck Bruce Wayne. No, I would kill him. Nah, actually I'd fuck him, who am I kidding."
Clark: choking on his coffee and rapidly turning an alarming shade of red
Diana: "An....interesting choice, of course."
J'onn: "Shall we play a different game?"
Hal: "Wait, what? that was the game, wasn't it?"
Ollie: "I'm with Hal, I'd fuck the shit out of Bruce. He's the easiest guy I know, it's not like it'll exactly be a hardship for him."
*every single person in the room turns to Batman, standing in the corner*
Clark: "Wow! I think I just heard someone drop an ice cream cone in Guatemala. Batman, I'll need a team up."
Ollie: "For ice cream?"
Diana, standing up and putting herself in between Bruce and Hal: "This sounds dire. I will also assist."
Clark, under his breath, one hand on Bruce's back: "It's not worth it. He's not worth it. Come on. Walk it off."

I was at a courthouse once, and saw an indigenous australian woman in a dressing gown very carefully and gingerly making her way down the steps outside the courthouse, surrounded by family who were helping her down the stairs. We asked if she was OK, because she looked awful. She looked like she should have been wrapped up in bed with blankets and hot soup, not on the steps of a courthouse.
One of her family told us that she had given birth yesterday evening, but that Child Protection services had taken her baby away with no warning, claiming that she wasnt prepared to look after him. What had happened, is that she'd literally only just given birth -- hadn't even passed the afterbirth yet, is holding her blood-coated, crying, newborn baby to her chest -- and a nurse asked what her feeding plan was. She was tired from the birth and distracted by the brand new baby in her arms and thrown off by the timing of the question, but still, she managed to answer, and said she planned to breastfeed him whenever he was hungry.
Well apparently that wasn't enough of a plan for the hospital staff, who reported her and claimed that she was unprepared to look after the child, and claimed that had no social supports, and that the baby was at risk if left with her. All because a brand new mother, 30 seconds after giving birth, didn't have a PowerPoint presentation ready to go that cited the timing cycle she would feed her kid on, and instead simply said that she would feed him when he was hungry.
Child Protection services showed up, took her kid, and she was told to show up to court the next day to contest custody if she wanted her baby back.
So a woman who had given birth less than 24 hours prior was forced to rally her family and show up to court to prove that she a) had a feeding plan for the child, and b) had enough social supports to justify reclaiming her baby.
It was one of the most appalling things I'd ever seen. I don't even know if she won her case. They didn't know at the time we saw them, and after that brief interaction on the stairs, i never saw them again. I sincerely hope she got her newborn baby back.
That was about 5 years ago. And the exact same kind of thing is still happening today.
News broke today from a South Australian whistle-blower of the appalling treatment new mothers frequently receive, including hospital staff taking the baby away from the mother "for medical tests," only for the mother to then be told, with absolutely no prior warning, that the baby was not going to be returned to her.
Here's the article, and here are some excerpts:

sorry to bother but i am in love with your camp here and there art it makes me so fing happy to see such great art for this show i love so much
idk what the fandom is cause i just listened but ur amazing and i’m so happy that ur sharing your art <3
obligatory, but is a second season being made?!?
have a great day
THANK YOU AAAA THIS MEANS SO MUCH TO HEAR <3 congrats on surviving your first listen through without imploding. I imploded. Sobbed cried writhed on the floor. It’s a right of passage.
ANYWAYS season two is… to the best of my knowledge, fully intent to happen. I know there have been a bunch of behind the scenes setbacks out of the M&CO’s control (I think it’s all detailed on the Mayfield & co twitter? Moving van theft, personal belongings & equiptment lost, there’s a gofundme still active I think!) but last we heard, season 2 is still a hopeful prospect. That being said, it has been a while since an official statement has been made on the matter.

i’m thinking about jeddie and the clocks
when the green one is given in his telling of the story his father is dead upon his return home
so that leaves two possibilities
he was lying about this while telling sydney
he had already told his father about his plans for the necromancy
i find both so fuckintbfascinating
also the sydney’s death being his fault guilt feels like more than typical self loathing, it looks like sydney was ill, and maybe even before the coma jeddie was trying to “fix” him
as the occult is mentioned as sydney’s specialty i’m wondering specifically about how he and jeddie interacted on basis of sydney’s illness/disability with his practicality and science based wish to fix everyone and sydney’s care for others health above himself
the idea of the architect also
jeddie seems to have taken on the role of the architect before resurrecting sydney
that is important
the memories of the sky being blue
i think as sydney lived with him and lucille is when the “building” of this world to suit sydney began
is this only in effect at the camp?
the compulsive return of the counselors each summer is fascinating along with junipers weird british antiquity leading to an idea that there’s definitely influence of jeddie’s meddling outside of camp, if we are still unsure of how much it is normal to us
the counselors seem to remember life before sydney’s death done, which once again leads me to thinking the meddling started long before then
and the elephant man existed theoretically before the coma i think because of lucille’s testimony
but i may be wrong there
nowwwwwww the magic that existed in the pre meddling world is interesting because i think there was either some interest or actual influence on sydney’s part based on what we’ve heard of jeddie’s journals
and the timeline is obviously confusing but i really want to know more about sydney’s mother
his mother feels like an important piece we haven’t really touched upon the motivations of atorywide and i think the centipede symbolism is her domain
but i’m rambling….
youre so right omg...
so necromancy is highly "illegal" and i assume its a punishable offence, likely by a harsh incarceration or even death (ironic innit), and "did [they] mention impossible?" which has got to be some sort of propaganda or something. necromancy does exist, its just extremely difficult and dangerous--what soren does is chasing necromancy i believe, but he only ends up with reanimation (which is stated to be possible in universe). i just think they push the "necromancy is impossible" line way too much for it not to be, y'know?
also, it seems that necromancy, even discussing real happenings of it can kill someone. if jeddie discussed his necromancy of sydney with his father and killed him, it lines up with how elijah reading the journals to the kids was physically hurting him. but this would also mean his father read the journals himself, and not jeddie reading it to him (bc it would have hurt jeddie otherwise) if this is correct.
im honestly not too sure about the architect thing, i think it might be something to do with like building something (sydney) from the ground up? like turn it off and on again? even the word 'muse' implies that jeddies 'architect' is referencing sydney for, like, blueprints or whatever. metaphorically.
also what you said about the world being built for sydney is insanely interesting!
like, for starters:
juniper doesn't want his father to know he's coming to the camp (which makes me think the properties of the camp are actually known outside of camp)
rowan comes back to camp despite his co-counsellor from the previous year literally being destroyed
soren is paying an absurd amount of money to be at camp (which also makes me think the properties of the camp are known outside of camp--there's obviously something he's there for)
joshua remains despite being widely hated (except by yvonne)
and of course the big one: sydney can't leave camp without feeling physically sick. he says he can't be away from lucille specifically, but i think it's really camp he can't be away from.
and then good lord dont even get me started on the penguins. why are they at camp specifically? is there something there they're trying to achieve?
also, elijah would've existed before the coma according to the file notes and dialogue implications, but iirc according to the timeline, he was only obsessed with sydney post-necromancing (i might try to make a comprehensive timeline one day...)
agh sydney's mother is so interesting... the gravedigress apparently reminds sydney of his mother, so that might. um. come up/have relevance at some point? centipedes are carnivores, too, so... hmmm... anyway
and omg please ramble to your hearts content, your takes are so interesting!!
