i cannot for the life of me make a decision about this, so do you have any headcanons on opinions on what banks would've been like if she had gone to high school ?? what tropes or clichés she would've been closest to embodying ?? because we know em was a nerd, that winter struggled for the obvious reasons but ultimately was fine in hs and fairly normal, rika was decently popular but far from the cheerleader level... but banks, i can't place what she would've been like if she'd gone to high school. we know she's very smart, but i can't see her as someone holed up in a library. then, we can also probably deduce that if she had gone to high school, damon would've been crazy protective but i still can't really make a set decision on much else regarding how banks' storyline/personality would've gone if she did indeed attend Thunder Bay prep or some other high school, minus these small details.
i do think she & emory would've got on like a house on fire if she attended TBP as they would've been in the same grade and probably had similar opinions on high school hierarchy and the horsemen and general thunder bay weirdness and extravagancy. they would've dissed people so thoroughly and easily with their quips and banter, for sure.
Ohh I have thought about this.
It can go so many ways, because as same with Emory, the debate is "was she naturally someone different and the circumstances made her this way? Or is it that she survived the circumstances because this is who she is naturally?"
Did Banks do so well in Gabriel's house because that's who she is, or did being in that house make her that way. In Hideaway, she mentions that she never cut her long hair because it was the last part of "Nikova." Additionally, her struggle with Damon is wanting to be her own person and to experience things other teenagers - normal teenagers - experience. But if she were a normal teenager, would she still value those experiences, or would they be mundane and expected?
I chose to think High School AU Banks would fall somewhere in the middle. She'd still be a bit of a tom-boy, and a bit of a rebel. In my AUs, she still lives with Lucinda, but Damon wants her close, so Gabriel pays for her to attend TBP. She's smart, but not without effort. She's not afraid to get involved throw down if she sees something she doesn't like. She's careful, though, and never throws the first punch, so she can always claim self-defense. It's helpful that she's a bit of a sarcastic smart ass and naturally skilled at goading people.
In school, she'd appear to be generally nonchalant about stuff, but she actually has a lot of opinions. It comes as a surprise to the teachers, who were not expecting Damon Torrance's younger sister to be so... outspoken. And argumentative.
Having a bit more freedom, and hopefully a healthy relationship with her brother, she’d probably be known for fighting with Damon in the halls over how protective he is. Like, he can’t even let her project partner talk to her without going all big brother on her.
Seriously, get a life, dude. Maybe if you had as much confidence talking to your little dancer friend as you do telling me what to do, you’d actually have a girlfriend. Newsflash, bro, there are certain things I can’t and won’t do for you.
I don’t see her wanting to participate in any extracurricular activities, but with a school like Thunder Bay Prep, it would probably be expected. I can’t see her wanting to be on a team, so Girl’s Basketball probably isn’t a good match…
Oh. You know, with her being a bit of a sleuth in Hideaway and tailing Kai to get his routine, she’d probably make a good Yearbook photographer. Or maybe working on their school paper. Maybe something along those lines that keeps her out of the spotlight. Though, I don't know what Banks would want to do growing up. Maybe she does go into student government, wanting to make changes that actually make sense and benefit the students, instead of planting a tree as the senior gift for the fifth year in a row (do these people even know what they could do with this much money, or do they only know how to add when it's involving cases of beer and tits?). Maybe she does it because she's tired of seeing Chloe get everything and wanted to challenge her, and then sort of accidentally ended up class president.
Actually, I like that...Emory makes fun of her for it all the time.
Speaking of Emory, they are best friends. Both come from more humble backgrounds, which would naturally make them targets for bullies, but not this time. Because the whole school knows wherever Emory goes, Banks is close by. And wherever Banks is, Damon is close by. And wherever Damon is, the Horsemen are close by. Not to mention, Will is a horseman, and he’s always close to wherever Emory is…
Not that Banks and Em need them. They're pretty good with the tongue lashings, themselves.
Without a doubt, Banks goes to every single one of Emmy’s activities to show support. She hangs out when Emmy’s working on her projects, and helps when she needs a hand. They both have a crush on a Horseman, but they only talk (read: tease each other) about that when they can guarantee no one can hear them.
I headcanon Banks, Emmy, and Elle are a pretty solid trio. Emmy's smart and artsy, Elle's a soft-hearted romantic, always talking about dating but never taking her own advice, and Banks plays the rebel without a cause who loves her two friends.
Anyway, have some pics that would definitely be in Banks' friend's (so Emmy and Elle) camera roll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
that last one's from Banks of will and emmy. (i've never seen love, rosie, so I don't know context. but I know in a willemmy high school au that has yet to be written, this scene will happen)
Let me know what you think! Or if my headcanons helped inspire some of yours. This was really fun, thanks for the ask.

emory scott opinion: she would kin rin sohma so hard. their trauma, the ways they deal with it— both are very similar, except rin is a lot darker and has more exacerbated trauma, and her love interest is THE MAN like he ran, he did it all, he tried his best and fought for his girl in the best ways. unlike will, who i mean, he was okay, but my man haru is in a different league. but god, look me in the eyes and tell me these clips don't give emory vibes.

thinking about DN (with a focus on conclave and nightfall, in particular) and the way Damon Torrance becomes so bland in those later books. i know he's been redeemed and all, but jfc, let the man still retain some facets of his actually unique personality. how is the former psycho villain the 'voice of reason' in nightfall out of everyone else present? how is he so easily re-integrated back into their group when previously he & the gang had such fundamentally opposing ideologies and ways of dealing with shit? damon had a redemption arc, i know, but i would've preferred to have seen more of his darkness seeped into the plot and maybe even corrupting the group as opposed to just this switch in how they all now view damon and the welcoming him back into the fold.
i don't hate damon's character and actually love his storyline in kill switch (despite being a diehard kaibanks shipper & banks stan, i will concede that kill switch is the best written book in the series even if it isn't my favourite book) but after kill switch, he seems to shed the majority of what made him so fascinating and terrifying as the villain in corrupt/hideaway/killswitch and just becomes the resident grump of the group 😭 it's probably a little morally wrong of me but i would've liked for some of Damon's harshness and darker tendencies to have remained intact in nightfall.

DN fanfic: an exploration into Kai Mori's mind while he's in prison. Introspective piece. So get ready for self-loathing, the woes of the disgraced son and the Banks reminiscence and yearning that we deserved.
My first Devils Night fanfiction ever. Actually, it's my first writing piece in a long time in general, but fuck it, we balling. I've always struggled a little with understanding Kai, but I think this piece helped me get more of a grip on my characterisation of him <3.
_
Kai sits in jail, and he knows he's a scrouge on his family name. He’s the shameful blot in their lineage, the fuck up who keeps on giving even when all they want is for him to stop. Kai's the shadow in his family's illustrious life. A good boy gone wrong, the ungrateful child, responsible for his mother's tight smiles and fervent worry — he’s the parasite leeching away at his mother's kindness, carelessly ruining the happy life his father fought to give her. It took one blow of a hammer slamming against a gavel, and his parents have a sword of humiliation rammed into their guts. The pain is only dug in deeper with the indignity of a sentence of 28 months lost to the confines of walls crammed to the brim with prisoners, with his fitted suits for interviews traded in for a standardised orange jumpsuit, as a lifestyle befitting of an animal is thrust into the hands of their only son.
The worst part is that they still loved him despite his neverending failures.
"–Gave him three broken ribs. So he fractured his fucking spine."
"Who?"
"The rich brat. Mori. He didn't even hesitate."
"Shit, he might belong here, after all."
Yeah, maybe he does belong here.
From the start of it all, he's been the defining reason for the lines marring his father's forehead, those were wrinkles etched in from worrying about Kai's unfortunate tendencies, but he's still forgiven again and again for every indiscretion that they catch him in and he learns to forgive himself for the thousands that they don't know about as a default. Kai's allowed to follow his own path even if it means spitting at his father's feet and disparaging the legacy that Katsu built with his roughened hands. It's wrong, grievously so, but he takes the chances and the freedom, Kai proves he's a certified fuck up. Useless boy who's worth nothing much when compared to the father who tried to give him every head start in life no matter what it cost. Katsu's a man who pulled his family out of poverty, he gives his wife her old life back tenfold, and Kai’s the worthless son who ruins it by gorging himself on endless vices, amusing himself by toeing the lines, and eventually, he gets a crew and starts obliterating the lines. Never improving even as they ardently pray for him, Kai only gets worse as the years pass.
Everyone knows it in Thunder Bay. Kai Mori's a cautionary tale in the flesh.
The good boy who gets caught up in the wrong crowd and suffers for it. Prince amongst the heathens, gilded gold stained by their tar, a demon playing at being an angel. Kinder smiles and 'thank you's' on his tongue don’t get rid of the taste of sin, but they mask it well enough. Until it suddenly doesn't anymore, and they see that he's made of the same strokes as his friends. Demon, not an angel. Predator, not the prey. Villain, never a prince. Sins can't be hidden forever in a modern era of phones to the ear and the glimmer of cameras catching their every move. He should’ve known better than to have expected zero consequences – Kai hid his truths better than his friends ever managed to, but an unchained nature couldn't be hidden forever.
People were predisposed to making assumptions.
In Thunder Bay, they accepted and revered the version of him that they thought they knew, and they share their aggrieved regrets as his fall from grace occurs in the brightened spotlight. Analysed just like Icarus, with a tragic fate of his own making – Kai can't meet his father's eyes for the first couple of weeks after his wrongs are aired to the public. Kai Mori had potential in spades, the gossip somberly chastens, and he squandered it away on freedom ravelled within insanity, he wasted a guaranteed future on the kind of lust that made priests look away in discomfort, and he ruined himself due to a useless loyalty towards friends that should've never amounted to much more than a footnote in his life.
Outsiders never understood how the blood of the covenant could run thicker than the water of the womb. They didn't feel the allure of darkness in its fullest form. Nor could they understand the power that control gave him when it was cradled in his palms, and he had chaos biting at his neck. She had, though, that one girl who hides in his mind just like she'd veiled herself into that confession all those years ago– she understood it all, and she even fed into it back then.
He wonders what she felt when she saw him in cuffs.
Mystery Girl was among his worst mistakes, mostly because she quickly became his darkest daydream and a favourite nightmare.
Kai's quiet when he does it. In the showers, when heat spindles against the mirror, he washes off the heat of shame by engaging in more depravity. He thinks about her often. And he's not gentle, not even close to it. Whenever he thinks about girls wrapped up in men's clothes, in shirts that aren't his, he's harsh and angry because they should've been his clothes, she should've been his girl. He thinks of smart quips on the curve of her lips, and he wonders how sweet it would've been to have held her and shut her up in the way he'd desperately wanted to whenever she said the name of a man who wasn't him. Kai's got a hand on his cock and he jerks it hard to the thoughts of her.
Chocolate hair. Green eyes. Golden skin. Daydreams and nightmares.
She's the only thing he never got that he'd desperately wanted in his golden years; she's the thing he still wants so carnally even in his darkest hours. Wants her thighs wrapped around his torso, wants his name to be the only thing she's capable of saying by the time he's done with her, wants her marked and ruined by the touch of him and him only. Indulging in her, Kai knows, would've been his favourite sin. Back then, he got only a speck, got nothing more than a touch, and he'd still been hopelessly addicted, high on fumes when he had the wisp of her silhouetted in his arms, and he was in withdrawal whenever he lost her to a man he hated and loved in equal measure. Just a taste back then, just the thoughts now, and he's still maddeningly hooked on her. Pretty girl, harsh girl, but never his girl. Sweet like candy with a tangy kick to her. She's the only drug in his veins, inching in without warning, putting him in a trance and an unruly high.
In the dead of night, she visits him, and Kai welcomes her.
He is a fuck-up, Kai knows it well. Somehow, he's still so ready to engage in the betrayal of his brother in everything but blood. Damon's down in a living nightmare in solitary, and he dreams of stealing his girl. He dreams of using her up. He yearns to take her and have her feed the desires of his concupiscent flesh for as long as he wants, and he thinks he wants to keep her for months, for years, for as long as it takes until she feels more his than anything else.
Irreverent lust, onerous fingers, amatory desires, and all for what? A girl he had known all of a couple of weeks. And he thinks he'd sell the flesh on his back to go back to that time with her. For her, he thinks he'd do anything because if she's a reverie then he's a victim to the ghost of her. Kai thinks of her and that hotel room, and he wonders why he let his dream girl go.
She's the only person to ever make him feel alive, to make him feel desire on an impulse, the only one who could easily stoke his dangerous need for control, and she did it all without ever trying. No fight to take and no need to make his blood boil; there was no need to force himself into those conversations with her because he was already obsessed with her voice from the second he heard it. Everything came naturally when it was with her.
He thinks she could've been his if she hadn't been Damon's to keep.
Kai laughs when he grips the plexiglass, breathes harder, and strokes faster– she's certainly not either’s now, and she wasn't his back then, but she is all Kai’s in the darkness of his mind. Smooth skin pressed against his chest, lips to his neck, and she's begging for it, for his dirty criminal's hands to stay on her neck. Moaning, whining, crying for more. He's undone by the idea of her, air caught in the chasm of his lungs, knuckles tightened to a pale white, as he gives into his favourite nightmare. Kai's spent by the thought of her, the evidence washed away by water, as his back presses against the shower wall.
Suddenly, he's almost glad that he doesn't see Damon here at all. Kai tries to convince himself that he should be relieved that he'll likely never see her again either (it doesn't work but he tries). If he doesn't see her, then it means the fantasies, the output of those unreachable desires, can stay intact.
There's no Damon to stop him. No dancer in a hotel to distort what they could've had. No blood to mop away and no nights to hide away. It was just him and her again.
In his dreams, Banks is everything he still desires.
In his dreams, she belongs to no one else.
In his dreams, Banks is all his.

devils night thoughts: kaibanks as parents.
when people think of kaibanks' children, their minds often swerve to madden mori, his inherent darkness and his issues due to his character being very highlighted in firenight. but me? i can not stop thinking about jett mori, and the way banks would be as a mother. she'd have to confront her childhood trauma once again, heal it even, as she raises a daughter who has the world at her feet as opposed to banks who was locked up. jett gets to behave and be whoever she wants and i love that banks ensures she has all the freedom in the world to just be herself. i find the fact that jett is banks' little fashionista, dressed in pink to be so ?? soft. healing. sweet. i simply LOVE banks as a girl mom and even more than that, i'd love to know how she felt when jett was born, if she had any worries, if her past with lucinda/gabriel & damon came back to haunt her, and the ways she and kai seek to raise jett to embrace her feminity and express herself in a way that no one ever let banks.
goddammit, i have such a strong temptation to write this as a fanfic, but DN is first person while i'm a third person writer 🫡 rip to my angsty & sweet ideas tho.

devils night thoughts: banks/rika/michael/kai edition.
- i found the action between rika/banks/kai/michael to be so icky because its framed as rika & banks being the ones with an interest in each other, and kai & michael getting off on watching. and this is so performative lesbian vibes to me, it feels gross.
- i probably wouldn't have cared about PD's fb one-shot, the scenes in hideaway & nightfall, if it were just rika/banks enjoying each other. i mean, sure, it's cheating on some level, but damn, it makes more sense to me than the weird orgy/nearly-swinger vibes between kai/banks and michael/rika.
- let those girls enjoy themselves ALONE without their weird husbands who may/may not have unchecked crushes on the wrong woman (let's be honest, michael definitely thinks banks is stupidly hot. and kai was down bad for rika for way too long), or not at all.
- another way this would've bothered me less is if kai & michael had some action with each other, but no, that didn't happen.
- my opinion stands: eww to these scenes.

Michael always came off as very closed off. Never close to his family, kept distance from Rika... the boys were the only people he let close. So, it does make sense he hyperfixates on them while they're in prison due to the guilt, his warped sense of responsibility, etc.
He definitely didn't envision banks and kai becoming more, but they did, and so he helped Kai cause I guess this was the one instance where he could relate– the heart wants what it wants, no one knows that better than Rika/Michael. For sure, Michael had a commanding presence. He could keep his cool and handle tension, but he was no strateigist. Damon was strategic to the bitter core. Rika learnt to be strategic due to circumstance. Will definitely had a talent for strategy, too, in Nightfall. But Michael does not come to mind when it comes to strateigic thinking, though he definitely had some level of intelligence, just like Kai (who again was no master of strategy though he was clever and had an imposing presence), but he wasn't some genius.
devils night: unpopular opinion: michael crist edition.
michael was actually such a bad friend if you really think about it. this is so ironic because his character is built off the fact that he's diehard for his friends to the point of having insane loyalty to them. he's supposed to be loyal to the point where he chooses to torment rika for that friendship's sake, to the level where he struggles with choosing love/rika over the guys in corrupt.
but like,, he was also so rubbish as a friend and person. it may have been due to oversight and PD not thinking about the overarching relationships that clearly, but c'mon, michael escaped prison while his friends were sent in and has huge guilt over this...
yet, he never once thinks to help damon's sister, who he KNOWS exists and who he knows would be SUFFERING in a house run by big, bad gabriel torrance. he knows his best friend is in jail, that she was the only family damon cared about to the point of keeping her under wraps and hidden away from everyone, and yet, michael never reaches out or tries to help banks??
and michael also knows kai is agonising over her in hideaway, they're actively against damon at this time and he has this top secret info to his name, yet he never thinks to tell kai who banks really is. everyone (including PD) uses the argument michael minds his own business, but no he fucking doesn't, if he did then he never would've messed with nik back during devils night or threatened her at the hotel.
the fact is that we should've either gotten a humanising moment/mention of michael actually being sweet for once in his life, and see him at least keeping an eye on banks if not reaching out while damon was in prison (although, i think it would've been a great platonic bonding scene if he had sought her out before the events of hideaway even if it's just to offer her an out that she may not take, or to simply ask how she is). OR, michael perving on banks that one night, him discovering she's damon's sister– that whole thread should've been omitted because it honestly made no sense to me and just made me dislike michael even more.

banks probably would've created an infinitely better revenge plan alone than the boys did with all their heads combined 💀but honestly, yes !! it would've been something to have seen banks & michael's bickering as they embarked on creating a revenge plan. she could've been his secret card against everyone, including damon, because like you said, not even damon knew that michael knew banks' identity. this is the sort of info you leverage against the guy who's trying to hurt your girlfriend.
i don't know what PD's intent was with michael's choices, but to me, it just makes michael come off as highly self-centered, which is not a good quality for the supposed leader of this group to have. he's clearly a character who has very few limits and is only concerned with his immediate group of friends, so likely didn't consider anything but getting the guys revenge as his main priority, thats the only thing he owed them, so it was what he was intent on giving them.
but this is a big maybe and based on my characterisation of michael. i'm more sure on this next part bc of hideaway providing at least some context– and so i think he never exposed that info to kai, because he didn't want banks & kai together, he didn't trust her, he was clearly antagonistic to her in early hideaway, he likely thought kai deserved better, and probably didn't want to give kai more reason to seek banks out by revealing the damon connection, thereby showing she could be kai's. he wanted her out of the picture, so revealing the info wouldn't have served his purposes. but at the time just before the marriage, its clear that kai is in love with her, that she is it for him, so he reveals the truth bc they're pretty much inevitable at this point. or that's my interpretation.

Tumblr media
There is such a deep romanticism to this; he sees her innermost thoughts and finds them infinitely interesting.
Tumblr media
They have different opinions, they're a true opposites-attract, and it shows in ALL their actions.
Tumblr media
Screaming, crying, throwing up– they're such a dark romance, but moments like this ?? ThatcherLyra are everything.

internally crying because rina kent is choosing NOT to write the one LOG book that i was dying for. remington // ariella would've been EVERYTHING, imagine the golden boy and the female stalker trope in action, and the amount of drama that could've occured with this one book between everyone. how did all of the King's get a book (the only book that wasn't about a King was Jeremy Volkov's and of course, that one was my favourite) but Ronan/Teal (my all-time favourite rina ship) got nothing for their one and only child.
justice for ariella // remi, their ship lives on in my brain. i have so many headcanons for them.

current series that i have brainrot for include: devils night series, royal elite series, legacy of gods, hollow boys by monty jay, folk of the air, crowns of nyaxia, ouabh, fairyloot stuff, a couple literary classics, and probably a lot more because i read semi-regularly.

devils night thoughts.
unpopular opinion:
while i love the series and usually fangirl hard for second-gens (legacy of gods, hollow boys sequel, cora reilly's verse), i think there would be too many issues with a DN second gen. namely, it would be very damon heavy yet again since he has the most kids. and also... i cannot lie, i'm so scared that pen would do a madden/octavia pairing, which is icky enough. i believe that they'd definitely ruin nikova/damon's relationship (since they don't seem to value it anyways after hideaway) to justify this ship, as they do write taboo and the taboo they write is pseudo-taboo. i just know they'd do something aggravating, such as some revelation that banks isn't gabriel's daughter, which would ruin a lot of her arc for me.
i'm also highly afraid they'd go heavy on creating marital problems between the og ships which would kill me inside. i need emory/will to stay happy, i want to believe kai/banks are secure, i think winter/damon had a great ending, and michael/rika were secure by the end of things. even if a second gen was feasible, they'd have to pick/choose characters i just know willemmy, and kaibanks would suffer as the least utilised.
DN has its problems, but i think the ending, and the implications of thunder bay's uniqueness/problems/wildness continuing was enough. it was good.

PD did banks so dirty from the very start of the books. i don't think they hated her like other fans like to say, but i do agree with your opinion and feel like they just created her character after corrupt, liked her concept and decided to throw her into DN when she actually deserved far better than this world and what she got in it.
emmy & winter got mentions in corrupt and hints of them being paired with damon and will respectively, while banks got nothing, and i hate this.
she was connected to two of the horsemen, kai via their past, and damon as his sister– how was there not even a hint of her?
honestly, i like kaibanks separately, when they're alone and away from the group. but when they're with the others, it just feels so sad because it always feels like kai would choose any of them over banks, that he constantly prioritises the others (especially rika) over her.
i once read someone's opinion that they think banks deserved a story that was more focused on her healing, with a character that might be dark and obsessive, but who still helped her stand on her own, who liked watching her slay, while also giving her all the love/care that she missed out on, one deadset on jointly punishing everyone that did her bad... and i'm inclined to agree, banks was her happiest in domestic/caretaker moments like when kai washed her hair or when they shared that meal for the first time,, she deserved a man that picked her first every time over one that leaves her feeling insecure even 12 years later.
OH MY GOD, she deserved a Jeremy volkov-esque character, a ronan astor. rina kent, in my humble opinion, may not write the best plots, but a lot of her male characters/relationships are top-tier compared to pen douglas who writes interesting plots but executes their amazing character dynamics in a way that comes of as kinda sloppy for all the DN characters but especially nik/kai.
devils night thought:
nikova banks, i could've treated you better...
it's the way kai literally forgets about her that night at the pope, and there's no mention of him trying to meet in her the years where he's finishing his senior year and the year where he's at college. the other girls got two devils nights with their dudes, but banks got one. she got a man who wanted her so bad that he apparently forgot about her until she was literally up in his face herself??
i mean, he watched damon be so weird & SA-ish to her, killed natalya in front of the two of them, and was so absurdly fascinated by him. then, he never thought to reach out or even think about her again? did he never ask damon about banks ever? what the fuck, kai?
this is what true love amounts to.
pd should've given us crumbs of kai's pining. he apparently liked rika because she reminded him of banks, yet he never once obsessed over thoughts of her?  she should've given us a scene of kai trying to find her, or of something that could've happened between them in the last devil's night before jail (because, i can give the kai a pass after jail since he had a right to have other things on his mind then), rather than what we got with the weird orgy in her fb group.
i am so obsessed with this series & especially banks characterisation and plotline. someone please talk to me about it 🙏

pen definitely made an obvious blonde vs brunette pattern on this point and many others, which i could screech about for days but i'll refrain and keep to only a couple points.
namely, winter/rika = rich, some decent-ish friends, non hellish high school experience, men that made sure no one ever disrespected them after they got together, hot threesomes with guys who did it before their love interests came into the picture.
VERSUS, nik/emmy = poor/highly abusive families, no decent friends minus the guy trios who are friends but not normal friends, hellish / no high school experience, had their men openly pick over people over them (kai with rika, will with alex) and let them be disrespected despite knowing what they were going through which made committing harder for them. they got the weird threesome scenes with people who had relationships/love-interests already, the girls who shagged their men once bc that's totally normal (/sarcasm).
emmy and nik deserved better, i will die on this hill.
Our sweet, innocent blonds got boys who were friends, who contrasted the girl's dark and intimidating love interest (Noah; Ethan).
Our brunettes got a set of boy friends, who were actually criminals, but revealed the softer side of our tough, cold-hearted heroine, and was at times put in positions to protect the heroine from their love interest (David and Lev; Micah and Rory)
I'm not sure why the pattern exists or what I think it means... but there's definitely a pattern.
