Collaborative Urban Design Studio at Cairo 2020 - Highlights
Collaboration
With plenty of preparation and coordination with the partners, security clearances to enter organizations and travel arrangements, a collaborative studio was planned to be conducted jointly by four international institutions between March 1st and March 4 2020, at Cairo, Egypt.
1.Department of Architecture, School of Sciences and Engineering, the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt
2.Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University (CU), Egypt
3. Acharya’s NRV School of Architecture, Acharya Institutes, Bangalore
4.Technical University Berlin (TU Berlin), Germany, Gouna Campus
The four days were planned out with great care to maximize the learning experience for everyone involved. Below are some highlights:
Day 1
The inauguration was hosted by American University Cairo at their Oriental Hall, which is a beautiful building maintained in its original magnificence.
One can thus see that the students were exposed to the study area by many experts who have been working on similar projects as well as who have been researching in Cairo on historic preservation and other urban, social, cultural and architectural subjects.
Day 2
The second day was hosted in the heart of the site at Bayt Yakan https://www.cuipcairo.org/en/directory/bayt-yakan. After presentations by Dr. Alaa Habashi and Dr. Ashraf Botros, Dr. Botros took students on a guided tour showing and explaining important aspects of architecture, history, socio-cultural activities, markets, thus pointing out and explaining changes with time and its status as of date.
It was indeed a great leaning experience on the walk, seeing Darb Al Ahmar, monuments and historic buildings in it as well as the Al Azhar Park and efforts by the AKTC.
Day 3
Day three began a presentation on Heritage in Indian Cities by Asst. Prof. Girija Umashankar to give a brief overview on Indian culture and architecture to the international students. The students continued to work on their sites, and visited respective sites as needed.
Day 4
Student groups worked on their presentations in the first half of the day at Bayt Yakan. After lunch everyone moved to Cairo University. The faculty were taken on a small tour of the campus while students prepared to present what they had been working on in the past few days.
Students presented their work on the issues related to historic preservation, urban regeneration, and discussed on possible strategies. Faculty members answered many questions as a guidance to the students’ concerns regarding issues in the Darb Al Ahmar region, specifically the three action areas close to the historic Ayubid Wall.
The event ended with presentation of certificates to all the participants. The whole group went for dinner together on a Boat on the Nile. Students partied singing songs of different cultures.
