I've always had this dumb theory that the reason some people get very defensive about other people giving (constructive) criticism about something they enjoy immensely is that, once they percieve those (possible) flaws themselves they fear they will not enjoy the thing as much as they did before. And I get that, I really do, but that's not how it works

Most of the time, the biggest fans of something are also it's biggest critics. Not to be contrarians or that they secretly dislike it but BECAUSE they are such huge fans. They analyse the story, characters and themes because it resonates with them and as such they will find what they feel are flaws with it. They love this thing so much and want it to succeed, want it to be even better. That's just how most fans are.

And like, not every fan has the same critique as the other. What one considers a flaw in the story or the characterization of a character someone else doesn't but they in turn see a flaw that the other person doesn't and that's perfectly fine. That's how fan discourse should be: fans discussing the pros and cons of the thing they enjoy and simply trying to understand each other better and wanting the creators of the thing they enjoy to improve their work. Because both parties would (theoratically) benefit from that.

Creators aren't sheltered either. I think most would respond properly to constructive criticism or at the very least understand where you might be coming from, as long as you are doing this in good faith. In the end, no piece of media is perfect and will contain flaws in some way or another. It doesn't mean that it doesn't hold value to both you, the creator(s) and simply as a form of art. Whatever it means to you is valid, no matterer what. I mean, the shonen series Naruto means A LOT to me (if you couldn't already tell) and I will always defend what I think are the (many) pros of the series but I will in the same breath also critique what I think are flaws of the series. My love for it isn't any less then it was 15 years ago when I started watching just because I've become more aware or notice issues with it's writing over the years.

If art is reflective of the person that created it then it makes sense that it's not perfect because who is? We all strive to improve ourselves and our work and I think fans want that too.

It’s funny watching Christians looking at adaptations of their mythology and throwing fits about how it’s inaccurate. Your stories are just as open to interpretation as any other fairytale or myth. Just because you believe it’s true doesn’t mean somebody else can’t think it’s just a fun story.

Not necessarily! From my understanding the theory goes that Megalovania only plays in the No Mercy route because the sans fight is the only encounter you initiate. So because you are taking the role of the 'monster' (with sans as the protagonist), sans has his turn first and your theme is what plays.

The name comes from megalomania, which is delusions of power, grandeur, or even omnipotence (which also fits with the song's use in Homestuck & The Earthbound ROM Hack I believe?). And Vania, which sounds similar to 'mania' and is probably a reference to the videogame genre metroidvania. So you're right it does make more sense in a No Mercy route context! But I think it would still work from a puppeteer angle.

Especially if this (very hypothetical) player vs characters fight only happens in the Weird/Puppeteer route. Because so far the route has a theme of the player finding loop holes to force the story off the rails AND has you causing the death of a lotta people. Both of which, imo, play into Megalovania.

However, assuming you're right, then Megalovania would be the player's equivalent to Undyne's 'Battle Against a true Hero' theme. i.e A theme developed due to extreme circumstances. Which could then mean you have your own equivalent to 'Spear of Justice'.

And honestly, that could be even more cool to hear in a player vs character fight.
