Interior Design Trends For Spring 2020
We like to keep our finger on the pulse of all things design related here at Unidrape, and with some great new fabric collections now available in-store, we have researched what’s hot for the new season:
High Contrast Rooms
We love this dramatic yet elegant look. Using a light neutral background with a strong, dark accent colour such as Navy or Charcoal, this style can be used in both modern and period properties with great success. Full-length curtains in a striking, dark geometric Art Deco print or texture can add grandeur to either a living room or a bedroom.
Furniture works well as an eclectic blend of period pieces with contrasting upholstery or cushions, and alongside more modern pieces. The fabrics used in this room are from the new Iliv Astoria collection, where a balance of small-scale pattern repeats are teamed with larger geometric designs. Lighting is kept simple, with accent lamps placed to create a variety of lighting effects.
Floral Prints
From wallpaper to curtain fabrics and bedding, the new florals range from bright tropicals to muted country gardens. Some of our favourite florals this season are the new Botanist collection, with delicately embroidered fabrics teamed with prints and soft checks. This style works perfectly with wooden Venetian blinds or plantation shutters to create a restful sanctuary with a colour palette inspired by nature.
Velvet
Luxurious to both the eye and touch, we love to use velvet on soft furnishings in rich colours! From a sofa to a footstool, or a roman blind to wall to wall curtains, we have a vast selection of velvets in different weights and finishes to be able to incorporate in any design scheme. We love mixing fabric textures, and feel as, in this picture, it only makes this beautiful velvet sofa more inviting!
Statement Lighting
Lighting is always an important consideration in any room design. We always consider the amount and type of light source required on any of our projects, but with some stunning new light fittings available, we think that designing a room with the lighting as the focal point can pay dividends. With architectural shapes and a wide variety of materials, statement lighting can inspire an entire room scheme.
Adding Accent Colours to a Neutral Scheme
Bright colours aren’t for everyone, and we still love neutral rooms! So much can be added with beautiful textures, and even small areas of colour can really lift a grey or beige palette. Something as simple as new cushions can make a huge change in the aesthetics of a room; and are a great way of intruding accent colours without redecorating.
So, if you’re looking for expert advice on interior design, Unidrape has you covered. Call us today on 01707 376088, or visit our contact page for more details.

Best Conservatory Blinds
Choosing blinds to dress your conservatory can be very different from choosing for other rooms in your house. In an area with so much glass, your priorities are likely to include reducing heat gain in summer, keeping the heat in during the winter, and of course privacy. Whether you have a traditional conservatory, a glass-walled extension, or an orangery, we can help advise on the best product to suit you. Here at Unidrape, we understand the importance of style and functionality, and with our knowledge and product range are able to offer you the best solutions without sacrificing either your style, vision or practicality.
Blinds for a Traditional uPVC Conservatory
For a traditional conservatory in uPVC, it is worth considering a no-drill system that is fitted to each windowpane, such as Perfect Fit or Intu. These frame systems enable a tight fit to the glass and make it easier to open windows and doors. Perfect Fit International frames are available for shaped roof windows; and are the best solution for reducing heat gain in the summer months. Pleated systems, in particular, can provide privacy, reduction of solar glare and insulating properties. Our Hive and Duette honeycomb fabrics provide an additional layer of insulation and come in a variety of colour and texture options.
Motorised Roller Blinds
If you have a large wall of glass such as bi-fold or sliding doors, motorised roller blinds can often be the perfect solution. Available with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries if no power source is available, roller blinds can be controlled on a remote handset, or through a home hub from your mobile phone or tablet. With a home hub, you can also programme your blinds on a 7-day timer, and even control your blinds remotely when you are away from your home. With a wide range of fabrics to choose from, motorised roller blinds can suit most property styles.
Roman Blinds
For a softer, warmer look Roman blinds can make a conservatory feel cosy in winter, and give a sophisticated and stylish finish. Using a thermal lining, roman blinds can improve heat insulation and block out any draughts, making the conservatory more usable throughout the year. Roman blinds can be made using the majority of our vast soft furnishing fabric ranges, in a variety of styles, colours and finishes.
Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds are available in a selection of material finishes; from real wood to faux wood and aluminium. Venetian blinds are fantastic at controlling light and privacy. Fabric ladder tapes can be added to both faux and real wood Venetian blinds to give a softer finish and add an accent colour.
Whatever the style of your conservatory, Unidrape are always on hand to advise you. We offer a free of charge, no-obligation survey and design service where our experienced designers can advise you and show you fabrics. So, if you are looking for a specific blind or are still unsure what to go for, Unidrape have you covered. Call us today on 01707 376088 or visit our contact page for more details.

Bedroom Lighting Trends for 2019
Interior design can be a very difficult thing to tackle, with new trends and designs coming in and out of fashion very quickly. Interior lighting is often a central aspect of your home’s design. Your home is your own place to manipulate and make your own, the lighting design can make a huge change from each room. What works in the kitchen won’t work in the bedroom and bathroom. The lighting reflects the function of the room and how the space feels.
What’s the most popular lighting to have in 2019
Lighting in the bedroom can completely change your room, it is incredible how much of a difference that lighting can make.
Rope Lighting
Rope lighting is very eccentric. Properly positioned rope lighting can help create a warm, calm and relaxing mood in your bedroom.
Portable Bedside Lamps
Portable bedside lamps offer great flexibility and functionality. If you love to read and you have a partner who prefers to sleep, then you can get portable reading lamps that you can use to read while your partner won’t be disturbed.
Standing Lamps and Table Lamps
Table and standing lamps provide accent lighting. Standing lamps usually provide design flexibility because it is very easy to move them around in a different arrangement. Table lamps also provide good lighting when reading. Lamps are often seen as the ‘boring’ option, but they are very on-trend right now, people are loving them in geometric shapes to add a bit of a twist.
Colours
Lately, lots of people have fallen in love with golds, grey and greige (a mix between grey and beige). People are loving this colour scheme all over the house, the soft yellow gold or rose gold looks great on the head of lamps or even on lampshades.
Matte finishes
A more traditional style that has come back around into people’s houses is a matte finish, it is become increasingly popular to have a matte grey finish on the light cover and lampshade. Lots of people have lampshades like this on a larger scale in metal looking style with a rose gold colour on the inside of the lampshade.
Marble
Marble has been huge in 2019 so far and is still growing and proving to be more and more popular. Marble bases look great with the soft gold accents on the lamp these 2 complement each other greatly.
Sculptural shapes
Sculptural shapes can also be a great and interesting feature of your bedroom, these can make an amazing decorative feature and can add a lot to a plainly decorated room. They can be a real statement piece- these can be fitted to the wall, ceiling or a standing lamp.
Which one of these trends do you reckon that you will try? Or do you have something completely different in mind and be a trendsetter? If you have any questions please get in touch on 01707 376 088 or alternatively head over to our contact page and fill in our online contact form.

Benefits of Window Shutters
Window shutters are usually overlooked when homeowners are considering window furnishings. Most people often turn to blinds or curtains to dress windows, however, shutters provide a quirky and attractive alternative for your home.
If you’ve been looking for a modern‌ ‌window covering that can replace your existing curtains or blinds, then take a look at shutter blinds/wooden shutters. They are a great alternative to your home. If you would like to find out how installing window shutters to your home could benefit your day to day life then take a look at the points below.
Increased Privacy
Shutters offer you full control over your home’s privacy, enabling you to completely keep out undesired attention either during the day or at night. In contrast to curtains, there is no gap left through from where nosey neighbours or intruders can peek.
Control Sunlight and Heat
The greatest benefit that a window shutter offers over old curtains is the way in which you can easily control the amount of light entering the room from the outside. The blind shutters can either be opened or closed all way or they can easily be partially opened. This will be highly beneficial, especially during the summer when you may want to keep the room cooler or you may wish to retain heat in those chiller winter months.
Safety
If your main focus is to make your home more child-friendly, then shutter blinds are a good option. The main reason why window shutters are safer than curtains is that wooden shutters do not have any strings that could pose risks to your pets or children. You may wish to fit the window shutters instead of curtains in your child’s playroom or bedroom.
Reduced Noise
Fitting wooden shutters or shutter blinds has been shown to minimise levels of outside noise, this helps to shut out any noise or busy traffic that can potentially disrupt your quiet afternoon.
Money, Money, Money.
Depending on the brand and style of wooden shutters you wish for, there may be a small upfront cost. Whilst this is less likely when purchasing curtains and blinds, you will be saving money in the long run. Wooden shutters serve as insulation for a home and can reduce the warm and cool air from entering your home. The wooden shutters act as a barrier to prevent heat from escaping your home, helping to control the temperature of your home all year round. This can help to reduce your energy bills in the long run, as you will no longer have to turn up the heating as often.
Durability
Window shutters are coated with a high-quality finish, the finish helps to prevent the wood from fading and water damage. As they are very durable, there is no need to worry about replacing them anytime soon.
Easy-to-use, energy-efficient and stylish, it is fair to say that window shutters are the way to go. They increase security, increase privacy, boost energy efficiency, reduce costs, block out light, minimise external noise, durable and can increase the property value of your home. What’s not to love? If you would like to find out more about our wide range of wooden shutters, get in touch today on 01707 376088 and speak to one of our specialists.

Getting your Garden Furniture Ready for Summer
Make your comfy outdoor seating area exclusive by planning a perfect garden set-up that will impress everyone including your neighbours and friends. We will be providing some amazing information that will guide you in making your outdoor oasis a pleasant space to spend a comfortable and relaxing time.
Choosing garden furniture isn’t always as easy as you first think. First things first, measure up your outdoor space for the selection of furniture to make it elegant and well designed. Gear up and shop smart! That’s right. Give your summer garden a makeover by thinking of it just like a room that you refurbish. Plot a map in your mind, whether you want it to be just like a comfortable lounge where you can relax all day, or setting it for dinner parties or BBQ to entertain guests. Therefore, revitalise your outer space with delicate designed furniture that makes your neighbours feel jealous.
After finalising your personal style and taste, choose the type of furniture that compliments your garden and gives a comfortable and fabulous experience for everyone to enjoy all year round. It comes in many types of styles; from sleek contemporary designs to traditional ones, with varied colours, shapes and sizes. Careful selection of all these specifications gives your garden a unique style. You can choose from a set of armchairs, to long sofas, to dining chairs. Because, let me assure you that you cannot spend more than one hour sitting on old fashioned wooden benches.
You can always make your garden look competitive with synthetic rattan furniture, known for its longevity, non-corrosive nature unlike steel furniture, it is also cost friendly and has many eco-friendly qualities. Let your imagination and hard work come into play by styling your outdoor oasis and choose from a complete range of furniture that suits your style, personal taste and standards.
Benefits of Rattan Furniture
Highlighted below are some of the benefits of rattan garden furniture that will complement your decision and make your garden stand out within your community:
Minimal Maintenance
Rattan furniture does not require regular maintenance. Instead, wash it with hose once a month to remove dirt or simply wipe the dirt off with a clean wipe to use it all year round.
Complements Your Garden
Add taste to your garden with various beautifully coloured rattan furniture of your choice that suits your garden.
  Comfort
Opt for comfort! Use plush, padded cushions then enjoy your relaxation. These cushions are mostly removable and machine washed, however always refer to the care label.
Weather Resistant
This weather resistant furniture lessens your struggle to keep them in shade to stop any fading from sunlight damage.
Cost Friendly
Rattan furniture is durable and falls easily within your estimated budget. With cost-friendly furniture, you can make your garden dream come true!
Lastly, flooding your outdoor oasis with unnecessary furniture can overload it and make it less attractive and less enjoyable. Make sure to add meaning to your garden with stylish furniture along with simple accessories like outdoor rugs, lighting or even parasols.

Flooring – Trends and Ideas
Flooring trends are constantly changing, not as much as fashion thank god! But home décor and flooring trends are continuously varying. Hardwood flooring trends have changed a lot throughout the years, in 2018 we saw a lot of the medium brown tones and a more rustic look. Another trends that picked up in 2018 were knots and strands, the natural and rough look was very popular. With 2019 we have seen grey tones come on to the scene and they look very luxurious. Carry on reading to see our top picks below.
Spotted 2019: Trends and ideas
The time has come, and you are ready to remodel your hardwood flooring and choose a new design that you have always dreamt of. It’s always so exciting until reality hits and you realise choosing flooring is um…. daunting. Except it doesn’t have to be, below we have listed the flooring trends that we have seen coming into 2019.
Bleached Woods
As we were saying this year, we have seen a lot more people going for grey tones. Not everyone likes the glossy brown stains of wood, for some people they would much rather the whitewashed look of bleached floor this is also a very modern design and can give a room a very clean and fresh feeling.
Distressed Wood
Distressed wood has the look of being a bit weathered and gives off a more rustic texture. This wood has a lot more knots and surface imperfections, than traditional wood would have, these will impact the effect of distressed wood.
Parquet Flooring
We’re all very familiar with horizontal and vertical laid wooden flooring. However, if you’ve been looking to have flooring with a bit of a twist, then parquet flooring would be perfect for you! It can make a room look completely different and a bit funky. This is a very eye-catching technique, we’ve seen people use different tones of wood, from the more traditional to the warm honey to tones.
        The Power of Rugs
Lots more people are getting colourful or patterned rugs to go over the top of their wooden flooring. It can feel colder in a room if you are used to the carpet and have just switched to laminate or hardwood flooring. Introducing a rug into the room can go a long way for making it feel cosier again. With hardwood flooring, you have more scope for which rug you choose as it is essentially a blank canvas for your room. Therefore, the texture and colour of the rug that you choose is left very open.
We hope that you have enjoyed reading our blog and it has given you an insight into some of the flooring trends that are about at the moment as they are forever changing.  If you do have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via 01707 376 088 or head over to our contact page.

Motorised Window Dressings
Motorisation of blinds and curtains is now both widely available and affordable; what was once considered as a premium product requiring an electrician to provide power sources is now cost effective and simple thanks to the huge variety motorisation options that allow everyone to add a touch of luxury to their window dressings.
youtube
There are many benefits to having motorised blinds or curtains installed, including certified child safety and accessibility on hard to reach windows.  When used alongside a Somfy home automation system, products can be controlled via an app from home or when away, as well as the option of 7-day timer control, making an excellent security feature. Motorisation is available for most blinds (including; Roller blinds, Venetian blinds and Roman blinds) as well as curtain tracks; all of which can be controlled via the same handset or app. Lighting, heating and security systems can also be integrated with the system.
Until recently, home automation systems were limited to the houses of the rich and famous. Specialist engineers laid a multitude of cables and racks of electronic control units to enable lighting, home entertainment systems and window treatments to be controlled via a hand held or wall mounted screen.  Smartphones, Bluetooth and app development has changed the market entirely. Devices such as the Amazon Alexa and Google Home have made home automation the ordinary for many households.  The plug and play set up and affordable cost of these devices has made them hugely popular, but many homes are not taking advantage of the full range of features they can provide.  It is now possible to control lighting, central heating, blinds and curtains via either of these voice-activated devices; as well as through your smartphone using the Somfy Tahoma or Connexoon interfaces.
Some of our most popular systems use rechargeable lithium-ion battery operated motors. These batteries simply need to be charged 2-3 times a year, using a mains charger that plugs into the motor whilst in situ, meaning the end user does not need to take the product down to charge. These types of motorised blinds are controlled by handsets that are available with numerous ‘channel options’, allowing a series of blinds to be operated both individually and simultaneously, as a group.
youtube
Not only can blinds be motorised using lithium-ion technology, but you can now add this luxury to your curtains. Somfy’s Glydea curtain tracks with Irismo batteries allow you to open and close your curtains at the touch of a button. The discreet track allows efficient and sleek operation of all types of curtains, with quiet operation and soft stop and start.
youtube
Intelligent motorised systems also provide additional security options for your home. With 7 day timer programming and adjustable pre-programmed scenario settings, your home can look lived in wherever you are.  Even from a sun lounger on holiday, you can control your window dressings and lighting; all from your smartphone!
Contact us to book your local survey, or to find out more about the motorised and home automation options that we offer.

Decluttering – The KonMari Method
There are many ways in which you can make your home look and feel amazing, however many people have the misconceived idea that to enhance your home, you must add items. This ideology is not always true; often you can achieve the perfect home by simply re-organising the items that already exist or by decluttering. Not only will your home look better but your lifestyle will also change for the better. The process of decluttering allows you to only present and keep items in your home, that have true meaning and affect. Most of us by now have heard of Marie Kondo and either read her book or watched her Netflix series. To give a bit of background, Marie Kondo is a Japanese organising consultant/specialist. Kondo’s mission is to ‘help more people tidy their spaces by choosing joy, and we are committed to developing the simplest and most effective tools to help you get there’ and she believes that you can achieve this lifestyle through the ‘KonMari Method’.
Traditionally people often choose to tidy and declutter their items by going through their house, room by room. Often you never finish and can never organise items in the most minimal and simplistic manner possible. On the other hand, the ‘KonMari Method’ proposes that instead, we should organise our belongings by category, Kondo proposes 5 categories; Clothing, Books, Paper, Komono (miscellaneous items) and finally, Sentimental items. This philosophy for tidying is so effective, as it not only impacts and betters your home; but it also addresses your wellbeing, by making your home a serene and inspiring space to be in.
To follow the ‘KonMari Method’ there are 6 simple rules, firstly you must ‘Commit yourself to tidying up’, followed by ‘Imagining your ideal lifestyle’, thirdly ‘Finish discarding first’ and the fourth stage is the key step ‘Tidy by category, not location’. The final two steps are to simply ‘Follow the right order’ and to ‘Ask yourself if it sparks joy.’ To understand whether a belonging ‘Sparks Joy’ you must hold and feel an item and keep only the items that bring/spark joy to your heart, if an item no longer sparks joy you must thank them for their service and then discard of them. This process will make you face your sense of values, leading to a developed sense of mindfulness and optimism. When you are on this journey, the final aim of this process is to have a house full of items that spark joy!
One of the key tips that Marie Kondo proposes in her ‘KonMari Method’ is to change the way in which we fold items, such as clothing. Kondo suggests that even leaving folded clothes, even in a neat, stacked pile is not efficient. She believes that instead you should fold your clothing, so that it stands up; making it easier to feel, find and appreciate your items (staying true to philosophy of the ‘KonMari Method’.) To find out more about Marie Kondo and the ‘KonMari Method’ you can check out her website & book, using the link below! We believe that you can transform your home through the process of Interior Design schemes & decluttering; we can help you create the perfect design scheme, with just the items you already have (but only the ones that Spark Joy!….) https://konmari.com/
