My honest opinion is that when they met on the Austin Mahone’s Live on Tour in 2014, they were just acquaintances/tour friends. Friends of circumstance. Yogurt majesty was equally friends with the rest of 5H, and there are even takeovers that prove it contrary to what they wanted to make believe with the fake narrative. They became friends for real the following year in 2015 due to the time they spent together for the song (IKWYDLS). After that, let’s say they were ‘forced’ to remain friends because of the future PR. I’ll explain myself better.

They were friends, but they never saw each other except on rare occasions because of the busy schedules they both had. Under normal circumstances, singers who have collaborated together, either remain friends and sometimes become super friends, or remain in friendly and polite relationships such as ‘I’ll have a chat exchange with you if I see you at an event and then we go our separate ways’. We’ve seen these two examples happen with a lot of singers. And in their case, at least the way I see it, they would’ve fallen into the ‘remain in a friendly and polite relationship’ category if it wasn’t for the future PR. After their collaboration, their relationship would have dwindled, and instead, precisely for the future PR, they had to maintain this friendship. They certainly did it with delight since they were fond of each other anyway, but let’s say that the way I see it, it was a forced friendship (and therefore not 100% genuine) because they had to keep it.

If before they kept that relationship of friendship with delight, afterwards, from the beginning of the PR to now, they’re 100% forced friends. Remaining long-distance friends was one thing, but being in a fake relationship by learning to know each other completely and living each other almost every day even just for those few hours that are needed for stunts, is totally another. We don’t have an official version yet, and apart from being blessed by Laur when she first sang it live two years ago, we still don’t have any other information about it. The only other thing I can tell you is that Always Love is part of the list of songs (like Expectations, Inside, Toy, Freedom, The Co-Dependent Dance, 50ft., Burning, her part in Let Me Know, etc., etc.) that she wrote in 2018 (on October 9, 2018, she said she wrote 40).

Let’s move on to my interpretation now.

Verse 1:

The first verse, and the whole song actually, is very self-explanatory. But let me explain how with just one word, memories, she managed to encompass more meanings.

With every person in our life, whether it’s a parent, a relative, a friend, a lover, or even an acquaintance, we create memories. Whether they’re good or bad. Obviously, the more time you spend with this person, the more memories are created together. Places, objects, perfumes/scents, songs, or anything really, can remind you of a person in particular. And regarding perfumes/scents in specific, especially the personal scent itself, since each one of us has a unique scent. That same scent, we can also smell it on their clothes and in their home, especially in their room (even more specific, coming from the closets because their clothes are there, and on their bed). That unique scent, we can also find it on our things such as for example a sweatshirt if they’ve worn it, or on the bed (pillow and sheets) if they’ve slept (or done other activities with you) there.

What am I getting at with this? To the fact that Laur wasn’t just referring to the memories of sex as it may seem and many have thought. She woke up, reached her arm out to the other side of the bed (because it’s a habit to do so if you and your partner sleep together often or if you live together) to find it empty, and was struck by the memory that they were no longer together. So, she started thinking/remembering about how it ended up, about the reason, about the why, and all the kinds of memories that ‘attacked’ her at that moment. And where did she do all this instead of getting up? In the bed. Why? Because that same bed contained memories of the time spent together on it (+ Camila’s scent that was still on top of it there).

“the memories - they’re still on the sheets and they stay there, so I’ll lay there with you”. She preferred to stay there, on the bed where the memories of her were, which may have been memories ranging from simply sleeping, having sex, cuddling, watching a movie, listening to music, eating, playing, having conversations, arguing, etc., etc., to be metaphorically still with her.

Verse 2:

When there’s still love”

For this part, I went to take a screenshot of an answer I gave an Anon some time ago, so that you can understand not only how these two things are connected, but also the period that Always Love’s talking about:

Look at it from a different perspective. Mine: she was very conscious about this (that it didn’t work) and provides a reason (the love) to say that even though it was over, the love was still there. It was a hope. An open door. There are billions of reasons why a relationship can end, but if there’s still love, then there’s still a chance.

Oh and, even though it didn’t work out between them (back then), Laur underlined several times during the chorus (and in the fricking title) of the love that had been and still was there, since she used the present simple. ‘It’s always love’. This is also an indication of non-resentment.

Fucking non-communication problems and misunderstandings! You know, sometimes I think that if they’d simply talked, they wouldn’t have had all those problems and that toxic, co-dependent relationship. But on the other hand, I think that if they hadn’t been through everything they’ve been through, they wouldn’t have been the same people we love so much today.

I also think it’s the same for them. “In your opinion, what inspired it?”. Well, in my opinion, their toxic, co-dependent relationship. Many of their songs are about this, and This Love is no less. This Love talks about the instability that their relationship had and the repetition of their actions that led them more and more to fall into that toxicity. They were addicted to each other, and therefore couldn’t let each other go. In one way or another, their unhealthy way of acting led them to always be stuck in the same limbo (until they finally got out of it).

This Love has the same concept and similar lyrics that Mila used in Leave for Good in 2014. Let’s say that This Love is the more mature evolution of Leave for Good 🤭🤣

Before starting I’d like to establish that This Love is about 2016, but it’s not about a single specific event. She speaks generically of all the times they broke up (even before they were actually official; therefore from 2013 to 2016) because, at the end of the day, it was always the same thing. Always the same situation.

Having said that, we can get started 😁

Intro:

“No, no, no”

She already started with denial. These are not just words to keep the rhythm. It was a way to express denial right away and set the mood for the song.

Verse 1:

“Know just how to make me miss ya

When I’m feelin’ sentimental”

Obviously. I mean, who better than Lauren who knew her perfectly and knew all her weaknesses? It’s easier when you know someone inside out (see what I did there 😏. I’ll do it often during this interpretation 😉). This part lets us understand that they weren’t together at the time.

“Goin’ in our separate ways

But when I’m back here in the middle

Losin’ you I couldn’t face

But to love you is worse”

Here Mila explains the usual loop that we also find in many of their other songs. The situation she found herself stuck in. They were together, they broke up, and before getting back together, she found herself thinking whether it was the right choice (before deciding to do it) and therefore she found herself stuck ‘back here in the middle’. In that ‘middle’, the same thing always happened.

She knew that loving Laur was young, and wild, and free. That loving her was cool, and hot, and sweet. That loving her was sunshine, safe and sound. A steady place to let down her defenses. But loving her had consequences. Consequences that looong after, when she couldn’t take it anymore, turned into “Loving you was dumb, dark and cheap. Loving you will still take shots at me. Found loving you was sunshine, but then it poured. And I lost so much more than my senses. 'Cause loving you had consequences”, which subsequently gave us Let Me Know, Something’s Gotta Give, Crown, Always Love, and to continue gradually with the story.

But back to the point. In that ‘middle’, that is, the moment before making the decision to go back together with her, she knew the pain that it entailed loving Laur and being with her, but at the same time, she couldn’t even bear the idea of losing her. The choice was between having her and suffering, or not having her at all. Well, we know what she’s always chosen. The memories and the strong, intense feelings she felt for her were stronger than any suffering. Stronger than anything in the world. That was one of the main reasons why she always came back together with her in the end.

Even though she knew how wrong it was to give in and fall back into that limbo, Mila clung to the idea that one day she would no longer suffer like that because things would get better. That they would finally solve their problems by getting out of that toxic situation (thing that then happened for real 🥳).

Pre-Chorus:

This is an even more perfect description of the cycle in which she was/they were trapped in. She tried to convince herself that that would’ve been the last chance every time, then they broke up, she raised the walls, Lauren burst in by breaking them down, and Mila found herself back to square one by believing that that would’ve been the last chance.

Oh and, we can see how “Said it’s the last time, but nah, nah, nah, nah” goes arm-in-arm with Leave for Good’s “Listen, ‘cause this will be the last time, honey”, because Mila had been thinking of giving her the last chance for years, which then always turned into other last chances.

Chorus:

“Get out of my veins”

This is a reference to Never Be the Same: “You’re in my blood. You’re in my veins. You’re in my head”. She came to a point of utter frustration many times; understandably so. It would’ve been easier if Lauren and her love for her had simply come out of her, out of her heart, out of her system, out of her veins as easily as she had come in.

“If you need your space, then just walk away”

Ahem-ahem. *throat clearing* “Respect for my time, respect for my space, respect for my energy”.

Come on, guys, it’s just:

No, but jokes aside, we know how often they talked to each other through their songs. This was a small reference, as well as an answer, that Mila gave her for Expectations. *Expectations comes right before This Love. And I don’t mean just in the actual release of the songs*

Again, and again, and again, and again”

Laur had this, let’s call it capacity, to ‘make it okay’ after hurting her and vice versa. This cycle, this loop, this limbo, this ‘game’, or ‘emotional game’ as Laur herself calls it in All Night (2014), had become exhausting (for the both of them) at that point (2016).

Verse 2:

“Maybe you should set me free

Maybe I don’t really want you to”

And the internal struggle continued. Here we have the head versus the heart. *The heart wins*

If Laur had let her go for real, then it would have meant losing her for real. Instead with this on-again, off-again, Mila knew she always had her in one way or another. Although she knew how bad it hurt her, how much healthier it would’ve been for her, Mila was a masochist in a way. Like a junkie in withdrawal. Same way she describes herself in Never Be the Same: “Got your chemicals all in my veins. Feeling all the highs, feeling all the pain. - …you intoxicate me. Here we have rationality versus pride. *Pride wins*

She wanted to be ‘set free’, but she also wanted to be ‘the person that Laur just couldn’t lose’ because, yes, out of pride, but also because that was what she felt. Laur was the person she absolutely couldn’t lose, as we also see in the first verse “Losin’ you I couldn’t face”. And this also explains the repeated use of the ‘maybes’.

On the one hand, it may look like she used the ‘maybes’ only to show her indecision and her mixed feelings, right? Because they’re all good at talking and pointing fingers without actually knowing. They’re all good at judging and asking questions like: “why do you still want this person if there’s more suffering than the rest?”, just because they haven’t felt it on their skin and therefore it makes no sense to them. So that’s what it looks like. That Mila used those ‘maybes’ to indicate her uncertainty. But, well, that’s wrong. Mila used them in a sarcastic way, also for protection and not to be judged by the kind of people who, God forbid they look beyond their own noses 😒🙄 But anyway. Let me explain why she used them in a sarcastic way.

‘Maybe’ is one of those words we often use in a sentence. Sometimes we do it without even realizing it because it’s completely natural. Many times, we use it to give a meaning and a change to the value of the sentence. Example: “It’s raining and I’m getting all wet. Maybe, it wouldn’t have happened if I had brought my umbrella”. In this example I just gave you, I used it to say something that was already obvious even without the use of the word itself. I added it in a sarcastic or rhetorical way to emphasize the value of the sentence, but the meaning of the sentence is still the same. Reread the example without the maybe now. Doesn’t it make the same sense? Good. Now I challenge you. Reread the second verse from the beginning and tell me you didn’t naturally get a smirk on your face. #trynottosmirkchallenge

Now do you also understand why she used those ‘maybes’ for protection and not to be judged by that kind of people? Because it was better to show herself indecisive and with mixed feelings instead of showing how much she continued to want that kind of toxic relationship with Lauren because it was Lauren (in the sense that she wouldn’t have done it if it were someone else). Wanting something toxic isn’t seen as a thing that made sense to outside eyes, so Mila simply preferred to disguise it in that way instead of saying it openly.

“If you’re gonna leave, then go

If you need me, let me know”

This is yet another description of their going back and forth and how heartbreaking it was. Oh and, we can find the same thing as the first sentence in Leave for Good: “If you’re gonna leave, then, baby, leave for good”.

“Love me or just let me go

But no, nah, nah, nah”

‘But no’ because it never happened. They couldn’t be together and love each other properly when they were still in the group. Only after that.

With “If you’re gonna leave, then go. If you need me, let me know. Love me or just let me go”, we can find the connection with “If you need your space, then just walk away” of the chorus, and we can also find the same resemblance in Leave for Good: “just say the words so I can disappear - Don’t make it too complicated. Either you leave it or take it”. And the same thing I wrote before: “If you’re gonna leave, then, baby, leave for good”.

Oh and, by the way, won’t you look at that. The ‘maybes’ have disappeared. And why’s that? Because in these (4) parts, there’s nothing to disguise. If before only those who lived that type of relationship could relate, with this, everyone could do it.

Bridge:

“Maybe you should set me free

Maybe I don’t really want you to

Maybe I just wanna be

Be the person that you just can’t lose

No, there I go and fall again”

In the bridge, we find a repetition of the second verse with the ‘maybes’, but Mila also adds a connection with the pre-chorus about her relapse into the loop. “Tired of building up my walls just to watch them fall again” = “There I go and fall again”. It’s another brilliant way of explaining that she knew getting back with her would only inevitably hurt her again. Why inevitably? Because they were still in the non-communication phase. They still hadn’t solved anything because, indeed, they didn’t communicate and they still hadn’t clarified and found compromises to improve their relationship. So getting back together in that way every time, always led them to inevitably break up as we know.

Here I go again back to square one. The cycle/loop/limbo we’ve talked about so far.

As I also explained in my Señorita interpretation: “Even though she knew it was best for her to let her go and run away from the situation for her own good, she couldn’t resist her. She couldn’t do anything about it. She simply couldn’t help herself”. Saying to do something was one thing, but doing it for real was completely another. Her determination broke with Laur every time because it was like she had this power, this hold on her. Something that we also find in Must Be Love: “You control me more than you’ve ever known. But I wouldn’t have it any other way”.

And that’s all, dear Anon 😊 In addition to what I’ve already explained to you at the beginning and during my interpretation, I’d like to add that This Love is a manifestation of the frustration that Mila went through. A scream to say “enough, I can’t take it anymore”, and at the same time, the surrender on falling back into the same cycle because she couldn’t lose her.
