Chicago gun violence: Toddler dies after being shot while riding in car

(CNN) A toddler and a 26-year-old man riding in a car were shot and killed in Chicago on Tuesday, the police department said, the second deadly incident involving a child in the city in the past two days.         The 2-year-old was sitting in a car driven by the child’s aunt and was shot in the head, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital. The man, who was in the passenger seat in front of the child, died at the scene and the woman was wounded.   The shooting was captured in a social media video that shows the three in a vehicle, listening to music, when 16 gunshots are heard. The woman runs from the vehicle screaming and yells that she has been shot in the stomach.         The woman, who is pregnant, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and she and her unborn child are in stable condition, Guglielmi said. The 26-year-old man who died was a known gang member, he said. Police believe the man and woman were dating.   The three were shot Tuesday afternoon in an alleyway on the southwest side of the city by an assailant who got out of a car that was driving by, police said. Police said they have a good idea of the identity of the suspect.           “We have very promising leads, we have (surveillance) video so there’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll find him,” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference.  Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the shooting should be a “turning point.”  “Every parent, regardless of where they live, should be able to take their child for a walk to the park or a ride in the car,” he said.   Earlier Tuesday,  11-year-old Takiya Holmes , one of two young girls shot on the South Side of Chicago over the weekend, died, according to her family.  “We just cannot afford to continue to see our children being shot down for things that they have no involvement in,” Johnson said. “This has just got to stop somewhere.  “I’m sick of it and I know Chicago is sick of it, and I just hope that our legislative partners are sick of it,” he said.   Read more:  http://cnn.it/2aRgnMF    The post  Chicago gun violence: Toddler dies after being shot while riding in car  appeared first on  Automotive Guide To Everything .

India eyes record satellite launch as Asia’s space race heats up

(CNN) Forget the US versus Russia. The real space race is taking place in Asia.   India’s space agency will attempt to launch 104 satellites from a single rocket Wednesday — a record feat that, if successful, will cement the country’s space smarts after its successful  Mars orbiter mission.   The launch would almost triple the current record of 37 satellites Russia sent into orbit in 2014.  “It’s going to be a big deal. It shows the sophistication of India’s space program,” says Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan, head of the Nuclear and Space Policy Initiative at the Observer Research Foundation.         India, China and Japan have all outlined bold space exploration plans for 2017 and beyond. Smaller powers, like South Korea,  also want to get in on the act with ambitions of their own.           The increasing competition for space-related power and prestige in Asia has echoes of the Cold War space race of the mid-20th century.   But they’re not the only motivations. The pursuit of science and technological advancement plus the economic and commercial benefits they bring also factor highly.   “I’ve long said that the real race is in Asia,” says Joan Johnson-Freese, a professor and space specialist at the US Naval War College.  “Recognition of the multifaceted benefits from space exploration and space technology dates back to the Apollo program. Carrie Fisher, the actress best referred to as Star Wars ‘ Princess Leia Organa, has actually passed away after suffering a heart attack. She was 60.    Household spokesperson Simon Halls released a statement to PEOPLE on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd:    “It is with a very deep unhappiness that Billie Lourd confirms that her cherished mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this early morning,” reads the declaration.    “She was loved by the world and she will be missed out on profoundly,” states Lourd. “Our entire household thanks you for your ideas and prayers.”   Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 23, when she entered into cardiac arrest. Paramedics removed her from the flight and rushed her to a close-by healthcare facility, where she was dealt with for a cardiovascular disease. She later on died in the hospital.  The child of showbiz veteran Debbie Reynolds and performer Eddie Fisher, Fisher was brought up in the sometimes turbulent world of movie, theatre and tv.  Of course,  Princess Leia was her iconic function, but Carrie also starred in “The Blues Brothers,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Postcards from the Edge” and lots of, a lot more.   She notoriously battled compound abuse throughout her life.
