Week 12 - Compulsory Question 1
Tumblr media
My group's manifesto has 3 important components.
Principle, Aesthetic and Reflection.
We agreed on these components as group mates because we believe that these are crucial in our design career. Our design principles are communication, visual engagement and to inspire. Through communication, we are able to connect with others through our viewers. We are also able to convey our message which is important. Aside from those, communicating works wonder in meeting with clients to prevent from misinterpretation. With interactive and colourful designs, we are able to inspire and engage with our audience while also creating social support and build stronger bonds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This series of posters is a good example for our group's manifesto as it fits the standards of our design values. The posters were communicated effectively with the vibrant text. These images gave off a sense of cold due to the colour grading which also depicts how persons with disabilities are being treated.
This social campaign's purpose is to educate others about people with disabilities. To let the viewers know the obstacles face by persons with disabilities as they go about their daily commute. Hoping that this series will inspire the public to be more considerate.
Any people with half a heart would understand the meaning behind the posters as it speaks a thousand words.
Tumblr media
In my personal manifesto, I have included mental health and good amount of sleep. It is important to prioritise these two values because they will help us mentally and physically.
Designing for clients can be draining and it may affect our design passion. To prevent from feeling this way, I make passion projects to keep the love going. My group's manifesto is not that different than mine because our beliefs are somewhat similar.
In my point of view, one of the aspects of CTS B that were significant for me would be: Week 2 - This is How You Connect Theory with Practice.
To be an illustrator is to have a strong artistic identity. Anyone can illustrate, but it is how we interpret and make meaning in our visuals. From this lecture, I learnt the importance of identity and I will be connecting this aspect in my design career.
However, Design-wise, the aspect that would be significant to the studio module is manifesto. By creating a structured manifesto, it will help us to be consistent and committed to a certain goal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Studio works from last term is a good example of my design values. My initial poster looked different than my current poster. The current poster have lesser elements than the original artwork because I believe that lesser is more. By being open to feedbacks and having self-reflection, we will able to improve ourselves!

Week 12 - Compulsory Question 2
My design strength is surrealist illustration. I do believe that my mind is capable to generate ideas that are unreal yet cohere. In 5 years from now, I want to be a kids illustrator because my illustration style is pretty similar to a picture book style, I have always wanted to work with kids because younger minds tend to be more creative. I believe that I am capable to do greater and crazier things if I let my creative fluid flow!
Tumblr media
How will I do it? I have been teaching kids traditional and digital art for a year now and it has been a fun journey! To me, working with kids is never boring and they are very happy to share with me their extraordinary ideas that sometimes..don't make any sense. The reason why I am passionate working with kids is because I have always been around with my nephews and nieces who enjoy creating art as much as I do. With this ability, I'd like to educate children in a creativity way than in theory.
Tumblr media
Strangely (not), I find myself at the children's section in the library. I train my creative mind by reading the books and carefully learn how a storyboard works. I am also practicing on motion graphics on After Effects during my free time!
To be where I want in 5 years time, I have to be disclipined in my creative works and be consistent. I have to be able to let my works communicate well by illustrating real-life problems too. This way, it will benefit me by building connections with potential clients and designers. Most importantly, I have to build my portfolio in order for me to get an experience working in an illustration company. Lastly, to understand the young and imaginative minds of children!
These are some of the works that I have done for the children in my studio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be relatable to the theme of social engagement and my artistic vision, my purpose and targeted audience of this engagement are for kids. This interesting installation was carried by Jean Jullien for kids to watch the creator illustrated an underwater world.
Jean Jullien's first exhibition is more relatable to kids' community.
Tumblr media
In my opinion, this exhibition is beneficial and creative as it helps to educate kids in an interactive way while also improving in their crafting skills as they take part in hands-on activities conveying the importance of the ocean.
While working with kids, I realised how the children are highly engrossed with social platforms that they forget how to be sensitive when it comes to important issues.
Other than just engaging them with the creative works, by visually educating them about the environmental issues may teach them to express gratitude to the Mother Nature. I believe that is the most important goal for this exhibition; to help children learn better.

Week 5 - This Is How You Critically Analyse Artistic Traditions and Lineages
Introducing the ever-famous batik motif of Singapore Airlines which features native floras from Singapore. The motif has been around since 1968 and subsequently adapted by French Couturier Pierre Balmain. In which was applied in the design of the Singaporean Girl's sarong uniform, which then became the airline's official mark to pay homage to our heritage.
Tumblr media
I believe that the batik is our reflection of identity to our Singapore heritage as it represents culture. By wearing the sarong uniform, it gives a feel of Singapore despite being miles away or 30,000 feet up from the small sunny island.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only do the airline has the sarong uniforms in 10 floras- batik motif, but they have them in 4 different colours which symbolise different Singapore dollars. In my opinion, I find it rather interesting and touched that Singapore Airlines paid attention to details and ensure that their elements are effectively communicated.
The batik motif has been incorporated on other collaterals such as merchandises sold on KrisShop, which is Singapore Airlines' retail flagship store and the strong focal element of the airline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was one of the projects that I was tasked to do during my internship in the branding department of Singapore Airlines back in 2021. (Upcycling Project)
It was important that I applied the batik motif in the backing card and designs. This shows the importance of the batik motif and how the airline has always align the elements into everything.
As a designer, learning about the traditions of the Singapore Airlines' batik motif is fascinating as we can see how much they care about the country's reputation and traditions.

Week 2 - This Is How You Connect Theory and Practice
Identity refers to the unique ways to define yourself.
We have multiple identities to alter to different social groups. I do not believe that individuals have to be their true-self to everyone they know because in my opinion, not everyone needs to really know who you are.
Tumblr media
For me, a designer with a strong identity is James Jean.
James Jean's works are remarkable and unforgettable. Maybe because he was one of the first few artists that I learnt about, but his works are easy to notice. He has a coherent style which he depicts the nature and origin of the world with surrealist imagery.
James Jean is prominent and committed to his consistent style but every one of his artworks are different from the other which makes every artworks; unforgettable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An animation studio with a strong identity is Pivote Studio, Seoul.
I strongly admire their works especially this animation video. I assume that it is a well-known animation studio in Seoul due to the number of projects that they have collaborated with Korean celebrities and dramas. As a design who enjoys watching K-drama, I also enjoy watching the animated intros.
Tumblr media
I think having a clear and coherent style makes good brand identity but most importantly, what makes it you. My illustrations have strong inclinations towards visual metaphors and full of emotions which I couldn't myself. I love colourful illustrations but my characters have no 'eyes' to depict a bland life.
To have a brand identity that is noticeable, I have to be committed with my design values. These are some of my personal

Week 1 - Creative Practice & Critical Thinking
While applying Creative Practice in our projects can help us to think bigger and break the norms, having a critical thinking is as crucial as being creative.
Creative Practice benefits us to generate more ideas. Having more drafts will help us to get the appropriate end-product. On the other hand, Critical Thinking requires to be more logical and connecting to concrete problems.
Other than having only beautiful designs, it is important to reflect if it resonates to the targeted issue as it solves the problem and communicate effectively while also creating impactful artwork.
Tumblr media
Visualizing Palestine creates visual stories for social Justice. Especially during this hard time for the people of Palestine, the non-profit organization has to ensure that their works are well-conveyed to be heard and seen.
Applying the visual metaphor of "Break" and "Siege," the designer has illustrate a simple yet effective poster that has communicate well to the audience.
Tumblr media
Same as Visualizing Palestine, Studio Renane Dal Bello has created a series to raise awareness. The design style leans more to minimalist but the posters are being communicated effected by making use of the negative space. To be engaged with the people, the company has created a S-curve typography to tell the audience that this series is related to spina bifida.
So why do visual designers have to use Critical Thinking in our projects? It is because we have to meet our purpose and aim. "Is It visually communicated?" "Has it been solved?" These are all of the questions that I ask myself as a designer.
