911 is doing something very, very clever with the Miami Vice / Crockett and Tubbs reference and Buck and Eddie. Go with me here...
Tumblr media
There's the inherent queerness of the ride-or-die duo, battlefield boyfriends and all.
There's the aesthetic queerness of Miami in the 80s. Just gay as hell.
But there's something especially queer about Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson, white guy, on the right).
Tumblr media
Crockett, specifically, was heavily queer/bi-coded in the text. In a way that's hard to read as anything other than intentional.
Buck: I'm Crockett, he's Tubbs...
Eddie: ...I'm Crockett
Here's the thing: Buck is correct. It's Buck who's dressed as the queer-coded character.
Crockett and Tubbs each had distinct styles, and Buck is 100% dressed as Crockett (linen jacket, unbuttoned, big shoulders, t-shirt underneath). And Eddie as Tubbs (full suit, buttoned, button-up underneath).
But Eddie says, no I'm Crockett [the queer-coded character]. Despite having dressed himself* like the "straight" character.
So, Eddie presents as "straight," but in a wildly hungover state? After god knows what went down with Buck the night before? Says that he isn't.
See what they did there?
The people who make this show are batshit crazy, I love them so much.
*100% guaranteed that Eddie chose their outfits.

No wait, I want to talk about how Eddie doesn't ask for clarification on Buck's sexuality at all. Maddie said "I didn't think that's where your interests would lie." She isn't questioning his sexuality, but asking for clarification because she didn't know this about him.
Eddie doesn't ask him to explain why he's dating a man now. He doesn't ask for a label. He doesn't ask about the women Buck's dated. He just process for a few seconds and then tells Buck nothing is changing between them.
He jumps right into teasing Buck and being there for him and helping him get the courage to reach out to Tommy again.
I'm so emotional about it. About Eddie taking it in stride and being like, 'okay, Buck's into men too. Now I need to make sure he knows nothing has changed between us and that I'll always be here for him'.
It's so soft, so gentle. Eddie has always been such a soft place for Buck to land when he's feeling low, just like Buck has been that for Eddie and it makes me all warm inside.
So often when bisexual people come out - especially later in life - they feel like they have to justify their feelings. Eddie doesn't make Buck do that. He just accepts his friend, loves his friend, and makes sure he knows that he's there for him.

Eddie: Kicks the 3rd woman he’s dated out of his house because of repressed catholic guilt after avoiding having sex with her.
Buck: absolutely flailing as a baby disaster bisexual and sending his date running for the hills before they even finish their meal.
Chris, “out of town” somewhere, sitting on a curb and smoking a cigarette: Jesus Christ, these two fucking idiots…

HOW TO GIVE PERSONALITY TO A CHARACTER
Giving personality to a character is an essential part of character development in storytelling, whether you're writing a novel, screenplay, or creating a character for a role-playing game. Here are some steps and considerations to help you give personality to your character:
Understand Their Backstory:
Start by creating a detailed backstory for your character. Where were they born? What were their childhood experiences like? What significant events have shaped their life? Understanding their past can help you determine their motivations, fears, and desires.
2. Define Their Goals and Motivations:
Characters often become more interesting when they have clear goals and motivations. What does your character want? It could be something tangible like a job or a romantic relationship, or it could be an abstract desire like happiness or freedom.
3. Determine Their Strengths and Weaknesses:
No one is perfect, and characters should reflect this. Identify your character's strengths and weaknesses. This can include physical abilities, intellectual skills, and personality traits. Flaws can make characters relatable and three-dimensional.
4. Consider Their Personality Traits:
Think about your character's personality traits. Are they introverted or extroverted? Shy or outgoing? Kind or selfish? Create a list of traits that describe their character. You can use personality frameworks like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or the Big Five Personality Traits as a starting point.
5. Give Them Quirks and Habits:
Quirks and habits can make a character memorable. Do they have a specific way of speaking, a unique fashion style, or an unusual hobby? These details can help bring your character to life.
6. Explore Their Relationships:
Characters don't exist in isolation. Consider how your character interacts with others. What are their relationships like with family, friends, and enemies? These relationships can reveal a lot about their personality.
7. Show, Don't Tell:
Instead of explicitly telling the audience about your character's personality, show it through their actions, dialogue, and decisions. Let the reader or viewer infer their traits based on their behavior.
8. Create Internal Conflict:
Characters with internal conflicts are often more engaging. What inner struggles does your character face? These can be related to their goals, values, or past experiences.
9. Use Character Arcs:
Consider how your character will change or grow throughout the story. Character development is often about how a character evolves in response to the events and challenges they face.
10. Seek Inspiration:
Draw inspiration from real people, other fictional characters, or even historical figures. Study how people with similar traits and backgrounds behave to inform your character's actions and reactions.
11. Write Dialogue and Inner Monologues:
Writing dialogue and inner monologues from your character's perspective can help you get inside their head and understand their thought processes and emotions.
12. Consider the Setting:
The setting of your story can influence your character's personality. For example, a character who grows up in a war-torn environment may have a different personality than one raised in a peaceful, affluent society.
13. Revise and Refine:
Don't be afraid to revise and refine your character as you write and develop your story. Characters can evolve and change as the narrative unfolds.
Remember that well-developed characters are dynamic and multi-faceted. They should feel like real people with strengths, weaknesses, and complexities. As you write and develop your character, put yourself in their shoes and think about how they would react to various situations. This will help you create a compelling and believable personality for your character.

Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.
1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.
2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.
3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.
4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)
5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.
6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.
7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.
8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.
9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.
10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.

I wish I’d been in this fandom since the start

The response has been beautiful - like I can’t tell you how many wonderful messages I received from people who are openly queer and people who are not openly queer, which has been really amazing for me to see. I’ve received messages from firefighters who have said, “I’m not out and seeing this means the world to me.” I could never in a million years of expected to be getting those messages, so it’s very humbling and just a really amazing experience for me to get to be a part of that.

This whole scene is damn near impossible to work with because dark af and zero quality, but. Two very important things:
Steve putting on Eddie's vest
Eddie staring at Steve as he walks away in his vest and blatantly checking out his ass

i know we all joked about buck repeatedly calling himself an ally when he was literally just kissing another man on the mouth a few days prior but like…of course he would?
for over 30 years he thought he was just that an ally and then some hot guy he barely knows but admires kisses him and suddenly there’s this whole new part of him that he didn’t even know existed. that is a huge thing to come to terms with and even tho it was exciting and freeing it was probably also weird? and scary? and just very confusing?
but those emotions aren’t something he feels towards queer people because he is, say it with me an ✨ally✨ so that’s probably not something he could immediately wrap his head around. saying out loud or even letting himself feel that he’s anxious about other people finding out that he likes men reads to him as something a homophobic person would feel and not as something pretty much every queer person can relate to.
so he just went into default mode reassuring more himself than anyone else that he’s an ally and that he knows that it isn’t wrong and that he doesn’t have to feel ashamed of liking men because rationally he knows that!! he just didn’t feel it until he got the support and reassurance from maddie and eddie, the two people closest to him who know his heart. knowing they still love him and see him the same was the thing he needed to be confident in himself (and to pick up the phone to get the guy he likes back) because ultimately something finally fell into place for him he just had some temporary adjustment difficulties.
