Outside the windows that look out into the gym, is a guy.
He’s got dirty blond hair, sun-bleached ends curling shaggy and disheveled around his ears, sticking out from under a flat-brimmed hat. He’s wearing a t-shirt with the sleeves cut out, sides hanging open down past his ribs, and athletic shorts that are hiked up to stretch around the considerable width of his upper quads. He’s standing there on the wooden floor of the basketball court, barefoot and sweaty and tan all over, looking like what California would look like if it was a person.
And his pale blue eyes (of course they’re blue eyes) are narrowed, laser-focused, and they’re staring right at Jamie.

Rudy Galindo - Village People
Gather ‘round. Before there was Johnny Weir, there was Rudy Galindo: Out, Proud, HIV+, so very charismatic. The judges punished him for it, but the crowds loved him. I still tear up a little watching him. He was the first skater on this level to come out on his own rather than be outed. Skating this routine back when he did it was brave. Coming out as HIV+ while still competing was incredibly brave in a way it’s likely impossible to explain in the current climate.
I love that he’s not the only one anymore, but I will never forget him and how pioneering he was.
