Havana, Cuba, Mar 6-10, 2020
Tumblr media
[Cigars, Vintage cars, communism but so so much more]
Since we’re still in a pandemic right now, this might not be the best time to blog about International travel (it is honestly starting to sound like a joke to me now after 7 months of being at home),  but still I want to document this JUST IN CASE one day the world opens up again. Fingers Crossed.
Cuba is the one of the most interesting places I’ve traveled to. Having lived in a communist country for so long and learned about Chinese communist history, I definitely see some similar traits on how things operate there (compared to  China before 1980s). 70-80% of locals have government jobs, limited quantity and variety of everyday supplies and a generally closed off economy. However, the culture was a huge surprise. Because of colonization all the way until 70s or something and close proximity to the US, the architecture, the people and even the food are just a fascinating mix of old Spanish, Caribbean and the Americas with a touch of Chinese influence (from I guess inter-governmental support). Glamours western looking palaces, stunning hotel rooftops (with Hemingway’s favorite daiquiris), extremely welcoming people, run-down multi family homes, Chinese brand buses, vintage (and very loud) Fords, moka coffees, and of course music cigars and Havana Club rum. There’s literally a little bit of everything which makes this place unfathomable at times but definitely very unique.
------------------
I spent 5 days in Havana, RIGHT before the US closed the border due to COVID-19.
Stayed in an Airbnb in Old Havana
Tumblr media
[balcony of my airbnb]
Everything was great besides no Wifi, which was pretty much the case with any accommodation besides large government operated hotels. With the visa I have (support for Cuban people) I was not supposed to stay in those so...My Airbnb host gave us a phone for emergency contact.
------------------
Participated in 2 Airbnb experiences
One was a rooftop tour (with drinks) in vintage cars (yes one of those very ‘fancy’ ones you see I tourist pics). Went to some of the best hotel roof tops, Madonna’s favorite restaurant, etc.and just amazing views.
Tumblr media
[sunset so pure and holy]
Tumblr media
[Another one]
Tumblr media
[rooftop of Kempinski with a pool and direct view of the Capitol]
Tumblr media
[the host had such good energy the group chatted into later in the evening and everything lit up]
------------------
The other was lot more cultural, basically a city tour with two Cuban college students learning about Cuban people. Had some very open and honest conversations about locals’ lives, struggles, Cuban government, social systems, political views etc. Very eye opening and informative.
The most shocking part for me was the drastic difference in lifestyle between the rich and the poor. Pretty incredible to see what tourists get to experience vs. how locals actually lives.
Remember the rooftops and impeccable views? Well for local Cubans working government jobs, one drink will probably cost half months’ salary, let along staying overnight in a hotel room.
We got to go inside to a local multi-family homes and spoke with people living there. 12 families (or was it 15) cramped in a tiny tiny yard. The living conditions were...brutal to say the least. Photographing their private rooms felt a bit too intrusive to me so I took photos outside.
Tumblr media
[outside of the multi-family home. Each window is at least one household]
As we walked towards the Chinatown area, which was right across Capitol (the central area), this is how different things are. I took these two photos standing in the same spot, just facing opposite directions. On one side-
Tumblr media
[grandiose]
and on the other side:
Tumblr media
[slum, building were literally falling apart and mostly empty with no windows]
------------------
I would recommend both experiences because I got to this country under very different lights and pretty in depth. In short, local life here is really tough but tourist/rich life is pretty damn amazing.
------------------
Havana Club Factory
I personally like visiting distilleries when I travel. Being able to see how different types of liquor come to be is interesting and it’s always good to learn about the history behind the brands. Like, sugar cane to rum? Magic. And honestly the silver one makes great Cuba Libre even with Diet Coke.
Since Havana Club is THE local rum brand and one of the most famous exports of Cuba besides maybe Cohiba, I had to pay the factory a visit. Unlike Bacardi factory in Puerto Rico, where they literally take you around in a golf cart, this place is a lot smaller but still very impressive. Needless to say I brought some back for friends but unfortunately they are still sitting in my home coz ugh COVID.
Tumblr media
[look at that molasses]
------------------
Cigar Factory
Also worth a visit. I didn't have a photo here but it’s a operating factory and the whole cigar making process open for display. I watched workers literally from picking the right leaves, rolling the cigars, cutting, packaging them, etc.
Tumblr media
[on my way to the Cigar factory]
------------------
Food and Drink
Great but not as cheap as you think. The prices are comparable to US, not NYC but maybe...Charlotte? I went to mostly restaurants for tourists instead of local ones which were generally way cheaper but not the best quality. You are welcome to try but I didn't want any accidents and was on vacation so decided to treat myself okay. There were plenty of decent restaurants and amazing food. Clean, fresh and amazing flavors. Not just rice and beans for sure.
------------------
Internet and communication
Like I mentioned before, wifi is not really a thing. I got Internet cards from my Airbnb host and also bought from the post office. It’s hourly and with the card I can log in and use internet at Wifi spots. Some specific park and post office.
In terms of calling and texting, I used T-mobile and the local phone my host provided to contact them.
Language - locals speak Spanish. I... don't really. Most people understood a little bit of English especially if they are in the service industry (like they know ‘water’ if you're trying to buy water in a store, most restaurants have English menus ). Locals in general are nice and will help as much as they can. I mean I survived pretty easily.
------------------
Traveling right before pandemic/lockdowns?
It was a little scary at the end coz there were very very limited internet access for tourist and we were worried we won't be able to go back or worse - get the virus and be stuck sick in a foreign (and definitely not very medically equipped) country. Thank God that didn't happen, and it was an amazing trip.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alrighty, hope this is some what helpful and I realllyyyy hope we get to travel again soon. My inner travel bug has definitely been buzzing.
Until then, stay safe and have faith:)
xxx.

Miami, FL,  Jan 11-13, 2020
Tumblr media
[Meet my new friend @Vizcaya Museum and Gardens]
Winter in Miami is probably a New Yorker’s dream, at least for me as I drown in layers of coats and sweaters and can still barely feel my own hands... Have to say, the weather here in Jan was the optimal combination of humidity and warmth. I was also pleasantly surprised by how metropolitan the downtown area is. Unlike other any tropical cities I’ve been to before, Miami has a strong big city vibe with all the vibrant bars, restaurants, stacks of tall buildings and 24-hour convenience stores (--those are important too okay?!).
A brief rundown of key locations from my way-too-short-not-ready-to-go-back weekend trip, hope these helps--
Saturday afternoon: arrived and checked into rental apartment in Brickell Icon (great location in downtown), amazed by the weather, got food at La Mar, and went out to a couple bars (Sugar, Blue Martini Brickell)
Sunday:  brunch at Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita, toured Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, ubered to Wynwood and absolutely loved the area, dessert at The Salty Donut, random dinner at Pollos y Jarras (not very good)
Monday: Perez Art Museum, airpot...
Food
In terms of food (by now you all know I love food/taking photos of them), you also have options, but can get a little tricky. While ceviches and cervezas seem like the obvious choices, for someone who not only can't eat dairy (mixed in most ceviches) but also not a big fun of beer, I had a hard time finding things to eat in some of the most popular restaurants... For example, when we went to CVI.CHE 105, one of the best+most reviewed place on Yelp,  99% of the dishes on the elaborate menu do not/couldn't be adjusted to accommodate my lactose intolerance. However, if you re into smoothies and cafes and açaí bowls, you’d be very happy here. There are also a great selection of Cuban and Peruvian food for apparent reasons (literally everyone here speaks Spanish, I felt a little left out tbh) and somehow an astonishing number of restaurants here are asian fusion. For recommendations, I would give you just one, for good view and services. Food itself was decent, but not mind blowing in any ways.
La Mar by Gaston Acurio in Mandarin Oriental
South American food (supposedly)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Grilled octopus was definitely one of the better dishes we tried!]
Tumblr media
[Branizo in ponzu sauce, a little salty for me. Comes with rice ...?!]
Tumblr media
[stir fried steak with rice, is this considered South American? Or am I just too Asian and everything tasted Asian...]
Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita
Normal brunch with extra hip name, limited coffee options (as in only black coffee...), but lots of cocktails!
Tumblr media
The Salty Donut
The vegan donut (pictured below) was really not that good. Regular ones might be better, good reviews online at least...!
Tumblr media
Bars
Miami is famous for its nightlife. Although because of time constraint and mostly my 11pm bedtime, we did not explore too much. I ended up going to 2 bars only (Sugar and Blue Martini, both in Brickell) and called it a day. Some clubs recommended to me by friends include E11EVEN MIAMI, Club Space, LIV, and Story (last two are in South Beach).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Sugar: a rooftop bar with great views, but gets pretty crowded]
Tumblr media
[Blue Martini: fun vibe, more clubby and had dancers. They serve cocktail with the shaker which was kinda nice. Wish I had a better photo but I don't...]
Museums
Loved Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Great architecture, beautiful construction, intriguing details, made for photos. So there’re lots of photos...See for yourself:p
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ok Im a sucker for all these symmetries, just picked two for the blog]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[I swear my grandpa has something similar in his house]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pérez Art Museum Miami
or the ‘PAMM’
Modern art, pretty decent selection with a slight focus on South American art. There was a short film about Brazilian pop stars that was really impressive, but not sure if its permanent/also can't remember the name...Outside of the museum was beautiful though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[lol my face...]
Wynwood, Wynwood Walls
Really hip area with lots to do. Cafes, shops, street markets, and GRAFFITIS  To me feels like Bushwich and Soho had a child with less people and more space. Definitely a great area for the younger crowd.
Wynwood Walls is a very well organized part of Wynwood filled with graffiti, reminding me of part Berlin Wall that was turned into a street art gallery (east side gallery? something along those lines). Although in my mind the essence of street art is that it is spontaneous and free and should not be caged in one place. At least I always appreciated some nice unexpected artful vandalism on some random streets.

Ok now hope you find this somewhat interesting. Enough babbling!
Until Next Time,

Vieques, PR,  Aug 24-26, 2019
Tumblr media
[Watch me get 3 shades darker in 3 days :o]
HEY it’s vacation time! After 6 months of working full time, I decided to take my first vacation and without too much planning, landed in Puerto Rico. We spent  days in Vieques, a beautiful little island near San Juan and another 4 days in San Juan.
Getting to Vieques, we took the ferry from Ceiba since we weren't in a rush and plane tickets were hard to get last minute... In hindsight, buying plane tickets IN ADVANCE woulda been a very good idea since the flight was about 25 minutes and the ferry took about 45 minutes + 1 hour getting to Ceiba ferry terminal. And we took the charter flight back which was honestly one of the coolest experiences Ive had so far. (I’ll try to get a video up here if Im not too lazy)
Accommodation: El Blok
A little boutique hotel with very artsy and unique designs. Nice rooftop especially during sunset (see pic below). BEAUTIFUL Balcony with the most calming views and Caribbean sea breeze. Honestly I can stay there all day every day.
Tumblr media
[All the rooms are located around this middle circle on each floor]

Going to the Beach
Most popular choices for transportation for us tourists are 1) golf cart 2) regular car 3) scooter. Walking is not really an option for sure. So we rented a golf cart and I would highly recommend it. Super easy to ride and park, no air but kept us away from direct sunlight.
Tumblr media
[old town road...?]
Tumblr media
[beach time]
Tumblr media
Food : Coffee, Cocktails, Fresh seafood, Mofongo
Please try all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
------
Vieques was chill, relaxing, breathtakingly beautiful. Haven't felt so close to nature in a very long time to say the least. Will upload another post on San Juan soon!
What I actually did most of the time:

Snark Park, Hudson Yards, NYC Apr 2019
Tumblr media
[’lost and found’ or maybe just lost...?]
Besides all the hype around the Vessel, Hudson Yards recently introduced a new installation- ‘The Snark Park’. Couple weekends ago, I made my first trip over to the area after its grand opening. To my understanding the installation captures the abstract concept of ‘lost ad found’ with combintaions of different textures and lighting effects. The space itself is quite small but definitely attracted some attention and people were lining up at the entrance.
Okay, sounds like a serious show but the expectation is basically taking as many pictures as you can with as many backdrops as you have time for. And that’s exactly what I did in my 45-min session. Here are some pictures of me trying to be dramatic/goofy and just ended up looking pretty silly. But hey I tried. So, enjoy the silliness I guess!

Savannah, GA, Dec 25-28, 2018
Tumblr media
[hello nothingness(?)]
Like I said in my Atlanta post, we spent the 3 days after Xmas in Savannah, GA. Savannah is only a few hours drive from Atlanta but everything feels quite different here- the people, the streets, the buildings...everything. Savannah lives on year-round tourism and the shipments at the Savannah Port. Although it is a coastal city, fishing is not a thing here and there are no fish markets, according to a local Uber driver. People just enjoy their lives and somehow I felt like majority of the population are older/retired or working in either tourism/port.
Also worth mentioning is that we also visited Tybee Island, a beautiful barrier island east to Savannah (very close, less than an hour drive). And if you have no idea what I’m talking about- look here for its exact location (thx Google).
Okay now back to Savannah-
We stayed at the Homewood Suites right by the Savannah River on the edge of the Historic District. It’s a very convenient location and cozy. We took Ubers most of the time to go to the central areas but it’s also very walkable (and tbh a nice scenic walk along river street).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since Savannah is quite small and we were not in a rush to see all the attractions, we basically wandered around with no plans in mind and followed all Google Maps nearby recommendations.  A few can't-miss spots (mostly food, obviously):
LEOPOLD’s ice cream
First of all, if you can't tell from the grin on my face- their ice cream is legendary. I got the vegan vanilla flavor (coz lactose, no:/) and the flavor was still definitely out of this world. Imagine the actual dairy ones... (actually no need to imagine, my boyfriend had the regular chocolate one and liked it A LOT).
Also, if you’ve ever seen movies before, the original owner’s son, Stratton Leopold, is the famous producer of blockbusters like Captain America, Mission Impossible, etc. (See what else he produced here.) That being said, the entire ice cream shop was meticulously decorated with posters, film strips, and all things movie related.
Definitely check this place out! To avoid lines, go early in the afternoon (2 or 3 maybe), but it doesn't get overly crowded anyways.
Tumblr media
Olde Pink House
As the name suggests, it’s an old, pink, house. It’s a nice restaurant but unfortunately a few days after we left, there was a fire that really damaged part of the establishment and is closed for the time being. What a shame! Hopefully it reopens soon.

Not much to say besides its very, very windy. A change of scenery for sure and seafood was also good!

Helen, GA, Dec 24, 2018
Tumblr media
[I know what your thinking- ‘awww...😍’]
This post is going be short but sweet just like my spontaneous half-day-trip to Helen, GA.  Helen is a quaint little town about 1.5-hr-drive away from Atlanta, famous for its Bavarian-style buildings and German heritage. Although I’m no expert on architecture or German culture, I was in Bavaria couple Christmas’ ago and since then have really missed the decked out German Christmas markets and festive spirits. So when Helen popped up on Google Maps as we were trying to find things to do for the day when everything’ s closed in Atlanta, I was very excited and immediately decided to make the drive (well make my boyfriend do the drive since I don't drive...) -- arguably the best impulsive decision I made during this entire trip.
Right away we got a zip car and hit the road. The drive was beautiful and the weather was nice. Great for turning down the window and blasting music.
Tumblr media
[Excited not having to wear a jacket in December!]
About an hour something later, we arrived and were absolutely amazed by what Helen had to offer during Christmas time. The town is not very big but definitely filled with holiday spirits. Very much the opposite to the empty streets of Atlanta, Helen was packed with tourists and local families and Christmas decorations. Most shops and restaurants were open and (rightfully) Christmas-themed. See for yourselves--
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[giant Christmas tree and gingerbread man house on the side of a street]
Tumblr media
[Bavarian enough?]
We were lucky enough to get the last table in one of the most popular restaurants in Helen without waiting- a German restaurant called Bodensee (German name of Lake Constance on the Rhine at the northern foot of the Alps. [Wikipedia]) They serve quite authentic German food, but since I’m not a big fan of pork we ordered mostly seafood besides the signature curry wurst.
Tumblr media
[A LOT of food. Regular sized salt and pepper for scale...Very satisfying to say the least.]
We went back to Atlanta shortly afterwards to make our reservation for Xmas Eve, but definitely wished to stay longer. So if you’re visiting Atlanta, highly recommend a day trip/half-day trip to Helen. You won't be disappointed.

Atlanta, GA, Dec 19-25, 2018
Tumblr media
[Warm Xmas finally!]
Everyone knows NYC during the holidays could be a bit overwhelming. To get away from the tourists and cold, this year we took a trip down south to the state of Georgia.
We spent about a week in Atlanta, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,  Neither me or my boyfriend have been to Georgia, so naturally we did a lot of the touristy things while we were there.  For Accommodation, we stayed n a Airbnb in Midtown for 3 days and the rest in the Downtown Westin. Both were pretty cheap compared to NYC prices (obviously). Location-wise, I liked Midtown better.  It is very convenient with lots of local restaurants and bars close by and not as crowded as Downtown where all the touristy spots are. However I’m a sucker for good views and the view from our room was quite unbelievable. I’m glad I got to experience both!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Views from our hotel room on the 56th floor]
Tumblr media
[Nice and cozy Airbnb with lots of space!]
Be aware that most places are closed during 12/24-25 here and the streets get pretty empty, so make sure to plan out your day early (things to do, places to eat, etc.) We didn't get to visit the CNN Tower or World of Coca-Cola because they weren't open during Christmas and wandered around for an hour trying to find open restaurants.
Tumblr media
[so close...]
In terms of transportation, Ubers or renting a car is your best bet. Downtown is walkable, and there are electronic scooters everywhere (Bird/ Lime) for short distance. You will need drivers license and be very careful while riding those tho, learned the hard way. SAFTY FIRST!
And now let me tell you about my favorite spots:
Museums and Sightseeing
High Museum of Art
One of the biggest surprise of this trip. The High has a very diverse collection of decorative art, photography, and modern art pieces among many others. I really enjoyed the aesthetics, the architecture and as much as I like MoMA and Picasso, the curatorial focus on southern and Native American artists was definitely refreshing.
Tumblr media
[reminds me a little bit of the Guggenheim]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[they have a Flavin too!]
Ponce City Market
Lots of food drinks and shops. Definitely worth a visit.
Highly recommend taking the Eastside Beltline Trail (a beautiful walk like the High Line) that will get you right to the market.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Ton Ton ramen]
Piedmont Park
It is exactly what it sounds like- a nice little park to take a walk or... a Bird ride.
vimeo
FYI
Georgia Aquarium
Hmm...Do not recommend. Yes there are cool animals and watching jellyfish move is extremely therapeutic, but the lines are too long for everything and the whole facility seems outdated. LOTS of people and gets very crowded inside- majority of them are kids below 12 yo with parents so decide for yourself.
vimeo
[Therapeutic right?]
World of Coca-cola
Right next door to the aquarium. Unfortunately didn't get to visit either due to holiday hours, but according to friends it’s quite commercial and not worth it.
Tumblr media
Food
For brunch: The Flying Biscuit Cafe (midtown near Piedmont park)
Very large portions and great atmosphere. Typical southern comfort food (grits comes with almost everything). Overall a bit too greasy and sweet for my taste but the French Toast is worth a try.
Tumblr media
Lunch/Dinner: Takorea
Mexican-Korean fashion, as you can tell by the name. Great fries! Cozy and cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[jalapeño in bibimbap and fried chicken burritos]
The Sun-Dial Restaurant
Located on 72nd floor of Westin Hotel on Peachtree.  Technically it’s a rotating restaurant but sadly the rotation feature was not working when I visited so no 360-degree view for me. Decent food and decent price for the sevice and the view. Great for special occasions- we went for Christmas Eve dinner!
Tumblr media
[Crab cake- absolutely incredible]
Tumblr media
[Halibut- ok]
Tumblr media
[NY Strip - arguably better than the halibut]
Tumblr media
[View from our table]
Friends also took us to Duluth where all the good Asian restaurants are and the 30 minute drive is not too bad if you’re really craving good Korean barbecue.
We also took a day trip to Helen, a nearby German town famous for its Bavarian-style buildings. Very Christmasy- I’ll do a separate post later.
After Atlanta, we spent 3 days in Savannah, GA.
Get ready for some pretty pictures!

The village and more, NYC, November- Jan 2019
Tumblr media
[the iconic arc]
For some reasons, I found myself downtown a lot lately. Ever since college,  I haven't really spent too much time around the lively downtown bar scene among the quintessential ‘young and free living in NYC’ hipster crowd. Maybe because it’s too much of a hassle to make a transfer at 42nd street metro stop, or I’m just too grounded in the quiet cozy uptown lifestyle, or  just laziness and lack of motivation to explore. These days however, as I am finally finishing up school and have abundant free time, the exploration began.
In this post, I’ll mainly be including places from Greenwich collage, East Village, and Meatpacking District-  some of my preferred spots, or rather, some photographic records of my favorite explorations.
Since some of the facilitates I went to do not allow photos, I will just leave links to their websites.
Live Performances
Cafe Wha?
Great spot if your into some live jazz. Gets a bit crowded during the weekend tho... Make Reservations!

(photos coming soon)
Shake and Bake (Love Labor’s Lost)
Immersive theatre experience incorporating dinner and (quite a few) drinks🍷 🍹 🍸throughout the show. Everything gets a bit more interesting when you mix Shakespeare with some alcohol-  highly recommend if you’re a  fan of either. Since the theater is quite small (fits around 20 people per show) and audience sit on couches together, it’s also a surprisingly great place to make random connections. Person sitting next to me turned out to be an alum of my school graduated about 30 years ago. Who woulda thought.

[post show blurs...]
Comedy: Village Underground, Comedy Cellar, Gotham Comedy Club
These places sometimes have free nights or a line so it’s worth doing a little research before you go.

Food
For Brunch: The Wild Son
Very photogenic spot with killer pancakes and healthy options. For modern art lovers out there, it’s also only a few minutes walk from the Whitney Museum if you want to see some Warhol in one trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[outside]
Spicyyy: Szechuan Mountain House
Originated from Flushing, they recently opened this new location in St. Marks. They are open all day so go  in the afternoon to avoid lunch & dinner crowd. Pretty authentic with lots of options.

[...take me back]
Oh what’s a better time to visit DC right after the craziness of the 4th long weekend. This summer my best friend of gosh 11 years happened to be working near DC so naturally I went to visit. It was my 3rd time there so no more touristy stuff- we decided to make it a food trip.

The Manhattan Skyline from (one of) the BEST viewing spot, Pier A Park, NJ, Aug 22, 2018
Tumblr media
[and photoshoot spot ofc...]
Oh hi again. Can’t believe I haven't posted in months and it’s still summer in NYC. How is it September and still 90+ degrees outside everyday??
Anyways, few weeks ago I finally finally made my way out of NY state...to Pier A Park in Garden State New Jersey (about a 20 min drive from UWS). This place has been known for its amazing view of Hudson River and of course the magnificent Manhattan skyline. So I have been to a few spots that give a decent view of the city skyline, like Brooklyn bridge park, LIC roof tops, and the side of Central Park reservoir, but have to say, Pier A Park is so far the top on my list. Not too many people, nice long walkways, large picnic area, etc., great for some artistic photoshoots or thinking/sitting on benches having deep convos about life’s purposes. Street parking available, but sadly not very accessible y public transit (at least from my research), so maybe Uber or rent a car.
Here are some pics:

Tokyo + Kyoto, Japan, May 10-16, 2018
Tumblr media
[finally!!]
Although I lived in Asia for 18 years, I never went to Japan. Now that I don't live that close, I finally decided to take a 6-day trip there. This time around, I traveled with my mom which added a lot more shopping to the trip (and let's face it who doesn't love Japanese drug stores). Also because I had a minor infection on my foot, I wasn't able to walk a lot or consume any alcohol (no sake for me sadly) throughout the trip. Overall, the trip was pretty chill and we didn't do too much sightseeing- more reasons to come back again for sure!
We started out in Tokyo:
Meiji Gingu
Tumblr media
[cleanse hands to show respect before entering the shrine]
Tumblr media
[came across a traditional Japanese wedding]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tokyo Skytree
Tallest tower in Tokyo. Taller than One World Observatory (I think).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Tokyo Tower is right there]
Sensō-ji (Asakusa Area)
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Tokyo. Worth a visit but crowded for sureee.
Tumblr media
Kyoto
After spending 3 days in Tokyo, we went off to Osaka and took a day trip to Kyoto. Super convenient with the JR lines (45mins, Japanese train system, affordable and fast).
Kyoto is definitely less crowded and has more character.
Lots of good food and nice temples. We didn't spend too much time there and went straight to the Bamboo forest.
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
About 20 mins train ride from kyoto train station. Nice change of scenery.

Rooftop bars in NYC
Tumblr media
[Happy drinking 😉]
Ah it’s finally spring in NYC. I remember walking outside around 11pm a few days ago, and for the very first time in what feels like FOREVER- I was NOT freezing. So I guess there’s no better time to release this post as the long-awaited appropriate open-air rooftop weather is officially here (fingers crossed).
I love rooftop bars and have made it my mission to try as many as I can wherever I go (beijng, chicago, bangkok, etc.) Of course over the years of living in NYC, I have accumulated a list of my favorite rooftop bars here and hopefully this post can give you some inspos for your next night-out!
(I tried to link all the websites just click the name)
The Press Lounge
Is a good one if you like the city skyline and the nice river view and have a hard time picking a fav. Nice indoor/outdoor sitting, and there’s a tiny non-functional outdoor pool for *endless* photo opportunities. Since it is located right in midtown you also get a close view of the empire state building and time square. Also it’s only on the 16th floor so no need to freak out if you have a fear of height👀.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loopy Doopy
On top of the Conard New York in Tribeca. The bar itself is quite small and only opens for the warmer months since it is all outdoor seating, but the drinks are absolutely delicious and fun. Their signature drink is Prosecco and ice pop(!!) basically a bubbly wine with a alcoholic popsicle inside (multiple pairings to choose from) and the popsicle melts in the wine as you drink. Such a simple idea and they really made it work. Nice view of the Hudson and perfect for sunset (photo ⬇️).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Skylark
Your classic nyc lounge with a view. Compare to the ones I mentioned before, the Skylark has no outside seating but a much bigger space indoors. (edit: I looked it up and there is actually a rood deck for seating outside!! Because I went in Feb/March it was not open then- definitely going back soon.) If you prefer less crowed  indoor seating (tables, couches, pool tables, etc.) but don't wanna give up the view, this is the place to be. The little outdoor area though is great for photos- there is even a RING LIGHT.

Bar SixtyFive
Saving best for the last... Bar sixtyfive is absolutely-one-hundred-percent my all time favorite among all I have been to. It is also among the first rooftop bars I ever went to in New York so I might be a little biased. Still, this is my go-to rooftop bar for any night out occasion (hanging out with friends, celebrations, etc.) and I just know it’s gonna be a good time. The ONLY thing about bar 65 is that its hours are quite short: 5-12pm Mon-Fri, 4-9pm on Sun and closed for Sat. Make reservations if you want to get a table because it has become more and more popular (😔) over the years and hopefully it never becomes one of those super touristy insta-famous bars in the future. It’s on the 65th floor of Rockefeller center and also COLLARS for guys (no tees or sneakers).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(another go-to: their champagne cocktail)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(back when it was snowing)
Will probably update this if I find a new spot. There are other rooftops Ive been to in the city (e.g. empire hotel rooftop, refinery, etc.) but the aforementioned ones I would definitely go back to. Drink responsibly and have fun.
Any recommendations please lmk!!

New Orleans, LA, Jan 9-12,2018
Tumblr media
[spooky Big Easy]
CAN’T BELIEVE it’s March, or actually, 8 days into March already. Quarter of 2018 just..GONEEE. Anyways, about two months ago, I took a quick trip to New Orleans during winter break to escape from the then-freezing (now-still-freezing) New York City. Although NOLA in January was not as warm as I thought, 4 days in the big easy was a nice change of scenery from the intense urban NY lifestyle.
Now, here are the pics and recs for traveling in New Orleans, LA:
For accommodation, we rented a airbnb across the street from the French Quarter. It was pretty close to everything, Bourbon street, Jackson square, good restaurants, etc. Good for sightseeing and going out at night.
Day 1- in order to know a little bit more about the city’s culture and history, we booked a French Quarter walking tour that started from Jackson Square and went all around the quarter. Very informative and the tour guide was funny. (She told us the craziness in New Orleans is genetic [?! -since the city was originally built by exiles and prisoners from Europe]) Definitely recommend if you have two hours to spend during the day.
Jackson Square:
Tumblr media
Faulkner House: (right by a cathedral, legend has it- the great writer used to shot nuns with a bb gun from his balcony...)
Tumblr media
Mardi Gras festivities:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
French Market:
Tumblr media
Filming location for Interview with the Vampire:
Tumblr media
Cafe Du Monde: bad service, but really good Cafe Au Lait
Tumblr media
Central Grocery: apparently famous for inventing pho boy, would be good to try if you like good old fashion Italian sandwiches (i didn't..)
Tumblr media
Restaurant August: if you fancy a nice meal. French, classy and food was good. Ideal for occasions or dates or both. Smart casual and book in advance if you want better table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bourbon Street at night: vibrant but touristy, still a must go
((I do have some awkward shaky footage of the night scene but tumblr wouldn't let me insert videos so using photo of myself to give you an idea. Imagine this + more lights and more people with loud jazz playing everywhere.)
Tumblr media
The next day, we decided to explore the garden district. Lots of pretty houses) and world’s largest WW2 museum.
Brunch first- Ruby Slippers (portion size too large but food was bomb ):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lafayette Cemetery: chillsss... I basically ran right back to the entrance after this photo was taken
Tumblr media
WWII Museum: surprisingly well curated and educational, worth going if you are looking for indoor activities or traveling with kids (i guess).
Tumblr media
Lots of gimmicky stuff (gift ideas?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jazz performance: Preservation Hall was worth the wait. No photos allowed during the show so snapped a quick pic outside the venue. (don't judge the hood it was really cold and my hair was messy from the wind okay)
but pro tip: get a beer or something before u go in, there’s no bar inside. (Im not a huge beer drinker, but i got beer and it went very well with live jazz.)
Tumblr media
Okay as you can probably tell, we didn't do too much in New Orleans. A good idea would be going to a plantation and swamp tour. Unfortunately it was rainy and windy when I was there so  had to skip that. But if you do decide to go to New Orleans, end of Feb- April would be the best time (according to uber driver) - a) because of Mardi Gras in Febuary when the big easy turns into a giant party city, and b) the weather is warm enough to be outdoorsy but not too humid that everything feels gross.
Going to Thailand in a few days for Spring Break (woo-hoo). I guess I will see you on here again when I see you on here again!
Until next time....

Tumblr media
[Misty Millennium]
First of all, HAPPY 2018!! Thank you to everyone who's reading this for being interested in my travels and whatever my posts have to offer. Hopefully I can be more consistent with this blog in the new year, but please forgive me if otherwise because once school starts next week, I know I’ll be hella busy.
Anyyyyways, Chicago. After years of contemplation (procrastination/ laziness/ forgetfulness), during fall break 2017, I finally ventured out to Chicago, Chi-Town, the “Windy City”. And yes, it was windy indeed.
Touristy Spots:
Millennium Park | Absolutely beautiful during fall time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
> Potential angles for photos with the Cloud Gate for your information
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) | Cool concepts, large collection, worth a visit

> But most of the time
Tumblr media
The Sky Deck
Decide for yourself if you also want to go all the way up to the 103rd floor during zero-visibility. I actually did not mind but will definitely go again in the future on a clear day!
Tumblr media
Jazz Club (Howl at the Moon) | great crowd, fine performances, loved the vibes
Tumblr media
Cindy’s Rooftop Bar | if you like rooftop bars
TBH we came here because my name is Cindy and rooftop bars are my favs, and the location was close to our hotel. Unfortunately the weather that night wasn't ideal so we did not go outside to see the view. Drinks were not bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FOOD | holiday season all year round (meaty, salty, plus all the deserts)
> Purple Pig ( Fried pig skin, octopus// touristy, expect a 40-60 mins wait)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
> Little Goat (cozy vibes)
Tumblr media
> Arthopolis (greek deserts// AMAZING and a local fav)

[squat down, be humble: worm’s-eye view]
Guys, I think I am having “my photographer’s block”.  To be honest, school and job search have occupied most of my days, but I guess I should still be able to make time for photo shoots. It has been a while since I  last took out my little compact camera and just went out to shoot. Although I am taking photos here and there on my phone, I just felt a little unmotivated and uninspired. Hopefully I can work through this and reconnect with my passion for photography soon.
Okay, all that sounded a little too dramatic. Life still surprises me with some interesting content ideas from time to time, like food, architecture, and even street markets. It’s New York City after all!  Here’s a round-up of my most recent captures.
- Union Square Park/Green Market
Tumblr media
(The perfect “BASIC” fall aesthetics am I right??)
- Brunch in Greenwich village   @butchersdaughter
Tumblr media
- Tribeca/Financial District
Tumblr media
- Word Trade Center/ Westfield shopping center

Absolutely. Breathtaking.
Alrighty now this wraps up today’s post. See you soon, hopefully ;p

September 2017 NYC (T&B 2 years!!)
Tumblr media
[New apartment who dat?? (me!) ]
Finally, finally I am writing another post on TravelnBabble. I was looking back at my first post and realize it has been 2 YEARS since my first post on here about my trip to Dublin. It’s crazy to think that a blog I orginally created to share my study abroad experience has lasted for so much longer than I intended to and has became a go-to space for me to document all the bits and bobs in my life.
As I sit in my Python class trying to form complete sentences on here, I realize just how important this blog has become to me and how much I value this little well-preserved space for spontanous self-expression. So, in celebration of 2 years of Travelnbabble, <still thinking and will insert later, maybe>.
Without further ado, a roundup of my latest millennial life doings in NYC.
- Impromptu B-day Brunch with best friend @ Jack’s Wife Freda  in Soho
Tumblr media
Try their melon juice
Tumblr media
- Cats on Broadway, classics are the best
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(About 1/2 second between these two photos but look how incredible the lightings have changed)
pro-tip for getting good seats for less: go to Tkts in Lincoln Center or 44th street/Broadway
(definitely worth it to sit in 2nd row orchestra aisle seats for $90/ea)
- US Open in Flushing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- MoMA, Midtown (for like the 5th time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Finally, my room in a real apartment that is not a dorm!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So much for today and a bonus pic of Morningside Heightssss<3
