Explore mount otce forest reserve in Moyo district

Mount Otze is located in otce Sub County in Moyo District; it was gazatted in 1968 as otze forest reserve. It’s probably one of the westnile’s greatest secrete and surprise to many travelers, standing tall at 1,563 meters above sea level and the one of the highest in westnile , covering 188km2. Offering visitors impressive and stunning views of the River Nile as it leaves Uganda and flowing into South Sudan. You also get to enjoy views of the surrounding erende mountain ranges such as ilo, Nyeri and ilingwa which straddle along Uganda south Sudan border.

Mt. Otze sits to the south of Mt.Otze Forest Reserve, a wooded savanna dotted with bush and thicket a shelter to 168 unique bird species like fox kestrel endemic to otce, other bird species includes the spotted tree creeper, white crested turaco, Red-throated bee eater, Uganda spotted wood pecker, foxy cisticolas, bronze tailed glossy starling other bird species including the restricted 14 of 22 Sudan Guinea savannah biome species found in Uganda. Making otze an avi-best destination in westnile.

With 261 tree species; thus providing epic vistas and sun filtering canopies throughout the trail, otce is regarded as a botanical garden, it was ranked 10th out of 65th forest reserve by department of forestry in Uganda with unique tree species such as the encephalartos endemic to otze, other tree species here includes shea butter tree (viterlaria paradoxa) khaya grandifoliola, dry zone mahogany, calamus decrataus, aloe schweinfurthii, tamarind indica, African black wood ebony , Mozambique ebony and eucalyptus species like tectona.

Massive population of primates is also registered on otce with species such as baboons , monkey species , chimpanzee census carried here revealed that the number have dropped. It also a shelters to three unique butterfly species and a threaten mammals known as shew crocidura formerly known to be from South Africa and crocudura known to be in only mabira forest, bats such as grammomy sibeanus & Rwenzori thicker rats.
