witchy ingredient: dandelion roots
Tumblr media
I have a huge fondness for dandelions. They’re sunny little flowers and their weedy resilience inspires me. I too would like to unexpectedly grow through the cracks of things without a care in the world.
Every part of the dandelion is edible–the leaves are a bitter green and the yellow flowers can be used in teas. Like many bitters, the plant has a mild diuretic effect (in fact, one of the folk names for dandelion is “piss-a-bed” which… how can you not love that?). This is supposedly good for your liver and digestion. Dandelions have been used in herbal remedies all around the world and across time, from Chinese traditional medicine to the indigenous nations of the Americas.
Today though I want to focus on the roots. They’re quite extraordinary! Dandelions are actually a taproot plant like carrots, meaning they have one big main root with several smaller ones reaching out of it. Their roots are notorious for growing really deep into the soil if left unbothered, and can be used as companion plants in gardening to help funnel nutrients up into the top layers of soil for surrounding plants. The roots too are edible with, again, a bitter taste.
Tumblr media
How to Harvest Dandelion Root
Firstly, it’s not advisable to just eat any old dandelion you find. They often grow in places that have been treated with pesticides, which you don’t want to eat.
Once a reputable dandelion is found or planted, timing is everything. It’s best to let the plant grow for a couple of years, and to harvest the root in the fall.
In the fall the dandelions typically won’t have their signature yellow flower any more, so be absolutely sure that what you’re harvesting is actually a dandelion!
Depending on how soft the surrounding soil is, you can use your hands to dig up the root or a gardening fork. Ideally, you don’t want to break the root, so try jimmying around the plant to loosen the soil before going in.
Tumblr media
Preparing the Roots
Wash the dirt off!
The roots can be eaten raw in salads, but typically they are dried. First take off the stringy excess roots. Then cut the taproot in half longwise and chop those pieces into shorter wedges, about ¼ to ½ inch or smaller.
To dry, you can use a dehydrator or you can dry them out in a cool, dry spot over a couple of weeks. You can then use the dried roots for whatever witchy applications you desire, such as powdering them or using them in spells.
The dried roots will keep for about a year.
Dandelion Root Tea & Coffee
Once dried, the roots are tastier if you roast them. A lower heat for a longer amount of time is best, such as 250 degrees (F) for 2 hours.
After the roots are roasted, grind them into smaller bits in a coffee grinder or with a mortar and pestle. If you store the roots in a jar and grind handfuls of them right before making them into coffee or tea, this makes the taste slightly stronger.
You can use the ground roots as you would coffee grounds to brew dandelion root coffee!
Alternatively, you can make a decoction tea, similar to how you’d make ginger tea. In a saucepan, combine a cup of water for every serving you’d like to make + 1 tsp of ground root for every cup. Lightly simmer for about 10 minutes. Afterwards, drain the tea and it’s ready to drink.
The taste is earthy and a little bitter, so feel free to experiment with sweeter elements such as cinnamon sticks or mixing with other teas.
Tumblr media
Possible Correspondences
Along with resilience, dandelions personally remind me of joy and luck. The association with granting wishes in their seed head form can also be borrowed for spells.
The English word “dandelion” is a bastardization of the French “dent de lion” meaning “lion’s teeth.” Dandelions can therefore be associated with Leo.
Roots in general, due to their nature, can be grounding or can bear some connection to the underworld.

how to live life like a ghibli film
1. go out in nature more. every studio ghibli film has some aspect of nature intertwined with the storyline. sometimes its hard to get the energy to go outside, but just going out on your deck or opening the window in your room or taking a walk around the block is enough. if you feel like it, go for a hike! go into the woods and look at every flower, and every tree. look at the mushrooms and streams and notice the beauty of them. look at nature like you’ve never seen it before. wake up at 4 and watch the sunset. put plants around your room. realize how beautiful the world is around you. appreciate it.
2. get a hobby! this step is certainly easier said than done, but its so worth it. struggling with mental illness makes it especially hard to get a hobby, but its very important that you don’t spend the majority of your time on social media. Start small. If you want to start drawing get a coloring book and fill in a picture with beautiful markers! If you want to write find a random prompt online, give yourself 30 minutes and see what you can come up with. Want to try baking? Start with an easy recipe, like chocolate chip cookies, and share them with your family or friends, or just yourself! Try out a bunch of hobbies, and see what you like best. Maybe you like making jewelry or writing poems or creating digital collages or making video edits or decorating your room or riding a bike or sewing or reading. The possibilities are endless, and getting a hobby you enjoy is very important, and fun.
3. start appreciating small things and noticing details. I don’t know how to explain this step, but in studio Ghibli films, small things always stick out. There are beautiful tiny details that make the story so much more magnificent. small details make the studio Ghibli films what they are. maybe on your way to school/work the sky was a really pretty color. Or the tea you made in the morning was perfectly steeped. appreciate small details of life that you don’t normally notice.
4. appreciate food. Pay attention to your food. If you can, try and make/bake your own food! But if you can’t, just be mindful of your food. Try not to eat while you’re on your phone. Dedicate times to just eating. Appreciating the food in front of you. Make yourself the ponyo drink with milk and honey, or ponyo ramen! Make yourself your own blend of tea like the Baron!
5. be kind and help others. Being kind doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, it can be smiling and waving at a baby in a café, or helping your mom finish the dishes, or paying for a friend’s coffee. Small gestures not only put good out into the world, but they also make you feel better. When you can, help others. Try volunteering at an animal shelter, or babysit for your aunt without charging her, or just listen to your friend when they’re going through something and be there for them. In every Ghibli film, the main character is always helping others, and being kind. Try to be like kiki, when she returned the pacifier to the mother who forgot it, or like chizuru from the cat returns, who risks her life to save a cat. Kindness comes in all shapes and forms, so just try your best to do what you can!
6. be your most authentic self. Stay true to who you are. dress how you’d like. Cut your hair like you’ve always wanted to. Stay confident and true to yourself. We all feel insecure sometimes, but we need to remind ourselves that we are great. Don’t try and force yourself to be someone you aren’t. Kiki felt insecure in her abilities as a witch, but she stayed true to herself, and believed in herself, and it paid off. Love and appreciate yourself, just the way you are.
7. (not really a tip but a fun suggestion) start collecting something! This is just an extra step that I wanted to include because I think its nice. But start a collection of things that interest you. It could be anything! Candles, stamps, teacups, antique figurines, 19th century photos, lip balms, books, key chains, flowers, hats. The choices are endless.

A WITCH’S COZY BUTTERNUT WINTER SOUP
This soup is sooooo good! It really puts me in the spirit for yule, and the ending of fall, into the transition of winter. Stir in a clockwise motion to bring cozy vibes into your houses atmosphere and dance to some winter songs to release stagnate energy from a days hard work! P.S. Yule Log Cake recipe coming up in a few day so look out for that !
Ingredients:
1 large butternut squash
1 large yellow onion
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 red pepper
2 cloves garlic
Salt and Pepper
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 sweet potato
3 cups chicken stock
Sprigs of thyme and rosemary
2 (28 oz) cans whole tomatoes
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp cinnamon
½ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp cayenne pepper
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375 F. Cut your butternut squash in half and scoop out the seeded part. Do the same for your red pepper and sweet potato. Brush with olive oil and season with the spices listed above. Bake for 1 ½ hours.
2. In a deep large pot, cook your onions and garlic until fragrant and translucent. Transfer that into a large food blender and add your tomatoes, pepper, flesh of your butternut squash and the insides of your sweet potato. Blend until very smooth and transfer back into the pot.
3. Add more seasoning to taste, chicken stock, and your sprigs of thyme and rosemary. Bring to a boil over high heat. Then turn it down to a lower heat, cover, and let simmer for at least 30 minutes.
4. Serve with grated parmesan, toasted bread, and laddle into bowls. Enjoy!
