I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you’re at a low point:
If you were a fictional man right now, there would be *at least* ten people if not a large portion of the fanbase that would call you their wet beast poor little meow meow

While I was in inpatient the main group therapy guy (who looks weirdly like Mads Mikkelsen) asked me what I aimed to do with my writing and I said, "Make people suffer. Some good, cathartic suffering." Which I've struggled with recently because I felt like that was a kind of malicious goal (since, like my friend Dirk said once, I always need to do the math so that I = bad). And he was very pleased with that answer. He said that it was a good thing, that I was introducing children to suffering and the ways that people process suffering in a healthy space (since it's not real) and that makes children feel (and he pointed to the word "safe" on the whiteboard). He told me I was a suffering person who could reach out through my suffering to help others with theirs, and that was good, that was important, it was transformative, and I was protecting children.
I just sat there fighting back tears and quietly said "Oh...I never thought of it like that."

I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:
Fictional characters are objects.
They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.

or, according to other popular AO3 ships, your bosses, who are either 3 ex wives deep and hate your guts, or in the middle of a messy divorce with two children and being used by the Illuminati.
Can you imagine being in Adam Jensen's romantic situation? Like you get fucked over by the girl you were in love with and you're left with the romantic options of sad little punk twink who desperately wants to take you apart and study you or annoying ass redditor who looks like an evil high mage in Dragon age who wants to sell you red lyrium. That shit is ROUGH

btw edit/continued thoughts re: fanfic & money post i rb'd; if things happen off the site, that's none of my business. my concern is with the involvement of the archive and legal liability.

I’ve seen discussions sometimes about how fanfiction-based fandom culture is heavily influenced and dominated by people who are not cis men.
One thing I haven’t seen discussed as much though is how much of fandom in general is shaped by neurodivergent people.
I mean, you have autistic and ADHD people with special interests or hyperfixations collecting information and writing detailed meta, connecting very strongly with characters and fandoms. I would not be surprised if the percentage of autistics in fandom communities was significantly higher than in the general public.
And that’s not even getting into other types of neurodivergencies and how they influence fandom culture.
I sometimes see people try to divorce fandom culture from the idea of being a “geek”, and I understand that this is sometimes because of the association with the sexist geek stereotype, but I also know that there is a connection between the two concepts, and it’s probably us neurodivergent people.

Our fandom forbearers did NOT suffer through Anne Rice, strikethrough, and other bullshit for fucking ACOTAR and Harry Potter fans to fucking ruin it for all of us by selling fanfiction. I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.

Sometimes it's useful to look at your dialogue and ask yourself, "would a real human being talk like that?" But it's also good to ask the follow-up questions of "would the way a real human being talks sound good here" and "does this character actually talk like a real human being or are they weird about it."
