Sven Saw Contribution to TRAKS
Tumblr media
Tools of the trade, but most notable the 21″ Sven Saw!
A big shout out to Sven Saw for their contribution to the Trails Association of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (TRAKS)! After years of use and abuse, and numerous gifts of these tools by your committee to trail fairies, we received two complimentary saws from Sven. Thanks Jon and team!
If you are ever in need of a great tool for doing work on our trails, you can find them here: Sven Saw
Alternatively, you can buy them at REI where the two companies have had a long history together. You can find the great read here: REI/ Sven History
Tumblr media
Again, many thanks to Sven for their contribution to our work in Malaysia.
Kind regards,
Your TRAKS Committee

Parks & Rec P's & Q's - An Interview with TRAKS’ President
Tumblr media
All hail Megat, TRAKS' President! But thanks as well to Juliet Jacobs and BFM Radio - The Business Station for inviting him to speak. We have often said that awareness drives change, and by politely reminding people via the radio, social media, news papers and more is an oblique method. Having seen similar things effect change in Malaysia over the past three decades, we are ecstatic to see the same approach being applied to our parks like Kiara.

Now that Kiara is finally gazetted as a permanent green lung, we are working with FoBK, JLN and other stakeholders to implement formal SOPs that will govern our park.
If you wish to join the committee, we welcome you! TRAKS comprises of hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners and even equestrian members. The latter of whom we would love to see back in Kiara.

Play-Rewind/ Play-Rewind - Upper Short in Bukit Kiara on 3 May 2019
Tumblr media
History repeats itself. JLN and their contractors have gone back in and laid aggregate (gravel) on Upper Short leading all the way to Lookout. A couple of JLN personnel, the foreman and a lorry were seen there yesterday. Going back on this trail today ... voila ... lovely scene that was encountered.
While we have subsequently heard that JLN, and strangely “JKR”, are doing rectification work in Kiara, once again this action has polluted Sungai Runs Through which “was” a Grade 1 river (you could drink from it upstream). No longer. Also, JLN didn’t engage stakeholders of Kiara in advance. As all would have said, there is no need to dump all this aggregate to conduct any remedial work. Completely unnecessary. Well done folks.

TRAKS Annual General Meeting - Saturday, 27 April 2019
Tumblr media
It’s time for the Annual General Meeting of the Trails Association of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (TRAKS). If you want a voice in building or maintaining trails, especially in Bukit Kiara, please make sure you attend.
Date: Saturday, 27 April 2019
Time: 4 pm
Venue: Dewan Komuniti, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail Jalan Athinahappan, 60000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
GPS Coordinates: Click Here
This is a follow up to the AGM that we had last year where a quorum was not met. As most may not be aware, we are a society/ NGO with a formal committee comprising of a president, vp, secretary, treasurer, web guru and committee members.
In order for trail users to continue having a standalone voice, regardless of whether its for Bukit Kiara, KDCF or further afield, we need that committee to function! No committee = no more TRAKS = no more voice!
United we make a powerful statement. Hiding on the trails doing your own thing is the same as sticking your head in the sand like an Ostrich!
See you on Saturday!
Signed
Your out-going committee!

It's that time of the month again. Time to get out and give the trails in Kiara a bit of TLC.
The September Trailwork Day is this Sunday, 10 Sept. We'll meet at 4 Ways and then split into groups depending on how many people come along.
As per usual we'll meet at 10am so you've got time for a ride beforehand.
If you have any tools please bring them along. We will have some tools to share but we always need more 😉
And if you're willing to buy tools, bring them along and leave them on-site after the session that's even better! Cangkuls and shovels are always helpful tools to be left behind.
We look forward to another great session. See you there 😎

Bukit Kiara Thanks You - Trail Day Complete
Tumblr media
Today we had TRAKS' third monthly trail work session and we're clearly gaining momentum. A huge turnout that surprised us all. We didn't do a full roll call but it was at least 30 people including a lot of new faces.
We all headed up to the top of Twin Peaks and started working on some serious water management issues on the feeder trails that join Twin Peaks with the top of Around the Mountain. Water channels and water bars that people wouldn't normally think of because there was so much digging to get the side of the trails below the level of the trail and therefore take the water off the trail and into the hill.
Then we moved on to Around the Mountain. Long story short we cleared a fantastic new flow line at the top of Around the Mountain for the bikes and in the process built a number of water management features to help with the masses of water that has been slowly digging the trail deeper into the hillside.
Because we had so many people we got two sessions worth of work done in one. Next time you ride or walk this trail have a look at the work that was done and you'll see how much digging went into it all.
Kudos to everyone for showing up. Mother Kiara really appreciates the TLC....and so does everyone else.
Signed,
TRAKS Committee

Trail Day @ Bukit Kiara - Sunday, 13 Aug 2017
Tumblr media
Our third iteration of a routine trail maintenance day is upon us. Sticking to the plan to have it on the 2nd Sunday of every month so that you can organize yourself to be there!
Date: Sunday, 13 Aug 2017
Time: 10 am.
Where: Meeting point is Four Ways inside Bukit Kiara
Directions: Google Maps here. Waze here . Note that you need to walk there and not drive!
Trails to be worked:
 Around the Mountain
, Flintstones and Carnival
Trail Leader: Gillie (just look for the scruffiest person hanging out at 4Ways with a Cangkul)!
Please do not be late. We will conduct a safety briefing describe what our objectives are for this trail day and then move to the location together. We need PEOPLE since this is an ambitious project to get done in one day/ four hours. BYO cangkul, pick and/ or shovel.
Note that the last trail day ended up focusing on 2K which was another greatly needed effort. That now done, we will do the more challenging trail. What we cannot accomplish on the 13th of August will be tackled on the next trail day. However, we hope that there are a TON of folks to ensure that we can get it done in one shot.

Bukit Kiara - Stop back door development of green and open spaces
Pola Singh
Bukit Kiara is one of the few remaining green lungs in urban Kuala Lumpur. Strategically located in the heart of the city, this “gold mine” is increasingly being eyed by opportunists and the well-connected.
On June 27, 2007, the Cabinet decided to gazette the 189ha Bukit Kiara into a green lung. After a decade, however, Bukit Kiara has yet to be gazetted.
The public have now been assured that the gazetting will be completed next year but the area to be gazetted will only be 159ha due to parcelling out of land over the years. In other words, the 10-year delay in gazetting has cost the public 30ha of prime green space. Will this trend continue?
Even as I write this, there are many opportunists waiting to grab a slice of Bukit Kiara for commercial exploitation. The area is slowly but surely being stolen right under our eyes. For instance, the eight high-rise condos at Taman Rimba Project (TRK) in Bukit Kiara represents a further nail in the greens’ coffin.
More importantly, the devastating impact, especially on the environment, ecosystem, peace and quiet, and flora and fauna is hardly considered. Many will only realise this after the forest is gone but it will be too late to do anything then.
Bukit Kiara is an open space that is loved and used by thousands of people, especially the Taman Tun community and nearby neighbourhoods.
The open spaces in Bukit Kiara provide an important amenity for recreational purposes. It is a welcome haven to de-stress, relax, re-invigorate and sweat it out.
We walk, hike, play, cycle and run on them. Our families enjoy a picnic or sit and enjoy the view.
We patronise such open spaces to relax, exercise and breathe fresh air to not only raise our quality of life but also make a big difference to our overall well-being.
Bukit Kiara in its present condition is our precious gift to future generations.
Can you please help us preserve and protect existing Bukit Kiara green lung? Can you please assist us to leave a positive and sustainable legacy for future generations in the spirit of rakyat didahulukan (people first)?
The way forward is to expedite the speedy gazetting of the whole of Bukit Kiara as a forest reserve as promised by the Government in June 2007.
Pending that, DBKL must come up with an unequivocal and strong written statement that they will not entertain any new development plans in the vicinity of Bukit Kiara.
This message should be made loud and clear so that developers and opportunists would stop eyeing Bukit Kiara for commercial exploitation.
In this regard, the Government should totally reject and stop “backdoor” ways to develop and monetise green spaces.
In the name of transparency, all transactions related to green areas (names of those applying to lease a plot of land in the green areas, the lease agreements, change of status in usage of land, developers who have submitted development plans, and etc.) must be plotted on a map in real time (a kind of green space atlas) and this information must be made available for all to see.
If this new SOP were to materialise, it would surely contribute to curbing corruption and strengthening the green integrity governance system in Malaysia through improved transparency and accountability.
It would also make us one of the “champions” in the world in addressing corruption in the development of green spaces in the city.
Since Kuala Lumpur has always tried to pride itself on being a green city, the relevant authorities such as City Hall should walk the talk and strongly endeavour to preserve all the green lungs in the city.
I hope and pray that common sense will prevail.
