When we think of queer life, we often think of metropolitan areas like New York and LA, or progressive places like Portland, Seattle, and Oakland. Many of us grew up watching Queer as Folk and the L Word, and just a generation or more ago, it was common for queer folx to move away from their hometowns to find likeminded communities. But more and more, queer and trans folx are staying put in their own communities.

I think it’s fair to say that trans and gender non-conforming (or TGNC) folx have it worse, because despite the giantude of the fashion industry, there are almost no clothes made just for us. Both& is a new brand that’s addressing a style world devoid of gender affirming clothing. FOLX Is Bringing Healthcare to the Queer and Trans Community. At this point, it's hard to argue against the idea that healthcare is a human right. But even outside a global pandemic, for too many queer and trans people, the unfortunate reality is that receiving any type of adequate, respectful and affirming healthcare can be extremely difficult. After all, between discriminatory insurance policies, harassment. I hate it being used exclusively because it will ultimate relegate the meaning to that one word. Besides that, my only gripe is the lack of pluraling done sometimes regarding folk/folks. My reasons for doing it are (and probably everyone else's): 'Folk(s)' is one syllable, 'people' is two syllables. Feminists Appropriating Reactionary Transphobes because TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) is too kind a term & assumes they still consider trans folx feminists & what kind of feminist excludes so many from their their movement. Why Folx Vs Folks

In 2019, the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law published an important report about the demographics of LGBTQ Americans. They found that the majority (63%) of LGBTQ Americans live in the US South, Midwest, and Mountain regions.

More than half of trans folx (54%) in the US live in majority rural states.

We know that most LGBTQ folx live in rural or red areas, but the exact number of trans folx living in rural communities is not fully understood. About 54% of trans folx live in majority rural states, which means that some folx will live in suburban or cities within these states, and some will live in the rural parts. Estimates of trans folx living in rural communities range from 16-29%. The largest numbers of trans adults live in the US South, and about ⅔ of the South is rural. The Census Bureau defines 'rural' as any population, housing, or territory NOT in an urban area, and an 'urban area' as a continuously built-up area with a population of 50,000 or more.

So what does this mean? It means that if we want to take care of LGBTQ folx, we need to recognize the unique needs of folx living in rural, and often politically red, parts of the US.

Trans folx in both rural and urban communities experience discrimination and deep lack of access to resources. But folx in rural and red areas have far fewer resources - affirming sources of healthcare, community organizations, social support, and other vital services. Incredible queer and trans community clinic resources are growing in bigger cities, but that progress isn't usually accessible to folx in more rural areas.

For over a decade, researchershaverecommended telehealth as a way to increase access to affirming care for LGBTQ folx - and FOLX is here for it.

What are the unique challenges for rural and red state queer & trans people and what is FOLX is doing about it?

Access to affirming care.

The lack of knowledgeable providers is the biggest barrier for rural LGBTQ folx seeking care. All rural folx have less access to care due to a variety of issues including provider shortages, transportation, geographical distances, lack of resources. But for LGBTQ folx, and particularly trans folx seeking transition-related care, it can be extremely difficult or impossible to find competent providers.

When trans folx do find a provider who considers themself to be competent, they often receive lowquality care. 1 in 3 rural trans folx report mistreatment from healthcare providers or insurance companies within the past year.

A lot of folx avoid the healthcare system altogether to avoid transphobic treatment, which means life saving treatments and preventative services like cancer screenings are put off. About half of rural BIPOC trans folx report delaying care. A third of trans folx of all racial backgrounds avoid seeking care for financial reasons as well as fear of discrimination. Heightened stigma, which is prevalent in many rural communities, decreases the likelihood of whether trans and nonbinary folx will seek care.

FOLX connects LGBTQ folx to providers who are experts in HRT and all aspects of LGBTQ care.

Distance to care.

Finding a provider is hard, and rural folx often have to drive extraordinarily long distances to get there. Driving an hour or two away means having to take time off of work, find rides, or paying for gas and wear and tear on a vehicle. Most rural trans folx have to travel more than 25 miles to find an affirming provider and about a quarter of rural trans folks will travel more than 75 miles; a third of BIPOC rural trans folks travel more than 100 miles for care.

At FOLX, our members never have to leave the comfort of their wifi or cell phone data connection, wherever that may be.

Isolation from support.

Social support is essential for optimal wellness - this is true in general, and especially true for folx who are transitioning. Studieshave shown that rural trans folx experience higher levels of anxiety, but that social support is a protective factor - meaning that having support can alleviate some of the anxiety trans folx experience.

FOLX addresses this need in a couple of ways. First, FOLX providers and our member support team are always here for our members. They can schedule time to talk with us or send us messages when needed; it’s all included. Second, part of our mission is to build community. We are working hard at figuring out the best ways to do that and have lots of community building events in the works. Cost of care.

Rural trans folx are 2x less likely to have health insurance compared to rural cis folx, and rural BIPOC trans folx are 3x less likely to have insurance. One in three rural trans folx of color do not have health insurance. For the rural trans folx who do have insurance, about a quarter are denied insurance coverage for HRT.

At FOLX, we bypass insurance so that we get our members the care they need without the hassle and extra cost associated with their bureaucratic mess. The cost of our HRT subscriptions are lower than any other telehealth provider and include most commonly used hormones, labs, and all visits. Of course, the cost is still inaccessible for many, which is why we’ve teamed up with Trans Lifeline to create an HRT Care Fund to offer as many microgrants as we are able to cover the cost of care.

Trans Folx Meaning Slang

We recognize that there is still a lot of work to be done to provide accessible, queer & trans competent care for folx everywhere. The more options there are, the more our community thrives. We hope to be one of many in which queer and trans folx are seen, supported, and empowered.

The term womxn (/ˈwʊmən/) is an alternative spelling of the English word woman. Womxn has been found in writing since the 1970s, along with the term womyn, to avoid perceived sexism in the standard spelling, which contains the word 'man'.(1) The term 'womxn' began gaining more attention and use in the 2010s as intersectional feminists promoted it as explicitly inclusive.(2) It has been adopted by various organizations, including student university groups in the US and UK, who call it more inclusive than women and other alternative spellings.(3)(4)(5) Conversely, it has been criticized for being unnecessary or confusing, conflicting with the uncommonness of mxn to describe men.(6)(7)(8) It has also been criticized as being more divisive than inclusive, and particularly for having transphobic implications.(9)

The word woman is derived from the Old Englishwīfmann ('woman-person'), which is formed from wīf (the source of wife), then meaning 'woman', and mann (the source of man), then meaning 'person, human', originally without connotations of gender.(10)(11)Man took on its additional masculine meaning in the Late Middle English period, replacing the now-obsolete word wer.(12)

Second wave feminism developed several alternative political spellings of the word 'woman', such as womyn.(13)Brandeis University sociologist Keridwen Luis states that feminists have experimented for decades to devise a suitable alternative for the term identifying the female gender. Such terms have included 'wimmin' (in the 1990s), based upon the original Old English term, and 'womyn' (since at least 1975).(14)(15)(16)

Dictionary.com, which added womxn and 300 other words to its dictionary in 2019,(17) defines womxn as 'a woman (used, especially in intersectional feminism, as an alternative spelling to avoid the suggestion of sexism perceived in the sequences m-a-n and m-e-n, and to be inclusive of trans and nonbinary women).'(3)

In 2017 The Boston Globe called the term 'a powerful, increasingly popular label, encompassing a broader range of gender identities than 'woman'—or even older feminist terms such as 'womyn'... a nontraditional spelling for people whose gender identity doesn’t fit in the traditional boxes'.(14) In 2018 Jennie Kermode, chair of Trans Media Watch, stated that the organization would not use the term, considering that women already includes trans women.(18) In a 2019 Styles article published in The New York Times, journalist Breena Kerr stated that while womxn was difficult to pronounce, it was 'perhaps the most inclusive word yet',(15) using a similar approach to the term 'Latinx'. Sociologist Nita Harker praised the term's ambiguity in pronunciation, saying that it forces users to 'stop and think'.(14)

Womxn's March on Seattle, 2018

In 2017, the Womxn's March on Seattle chose to use the term 'womxn' to promote the march. Elizabeth Hunter-Keller, the event's communications chair, told The New York Times that they chose it based upon the recommendation of a core organizer, who was a nonbinary person, and to reflect the organizing group's diversity. Hunter-Keller reported that although there were some questions, most supporters encouraged the choice.(15) In January 2018, Portland held the Indigenous Womxn’s March, dedicated to missing and murdered indigenous girls, women, and transgender people.(19)

In October 2019, the Wellcome Collection, a museum and library in London, made an announcement through Twitter using the term to demonstrate their goal of including diverse perspectives; after complaints from hundreds of followers, the museum later apologized and removed the term from its website.(15)(20)Labour Party politician Jess Phillips responded to the incident by saying, 'I've never met a trans woman who was offended by the word woman being used, so I'm not sure why this keeps happening'.(18) Clara Bradbury-Rance of King's College London conjectured that the push-back was because the use of the term was seen as too simplistic and a 'fix-all'.(18)

On March 1, 2021, the streaming platformTwitch used the term 'Womxn' to promote events celebrating Women's History Month. The event was announced through Twitter, which led to immediate backlash from various users who considered the term transphobic. Twitch removed the tweet and apologised, stating that they wanted to use the word to acknowledge the shortcomings of gender-binary language and that they would use the term 'women' moving forward.(21)(22)

Christopher Mark Bailey (31 May 1950 – 4 April 2013) was an Australian bass guitarist and vocalist. He was a member of various rock groups including Headband (1971–1974), The Angels (1976–1982, 2008–2013), Gang Gajang (1984–2013), and The Stetsons (1987, 1997). Bailey died of throat cancer, aged 62.

Christopher Mark Bailey was born on 31 May 1950 in Keith, a rural town some 225 km south-east of Adelaide.(1) His parents Alfred 'Bill' Bailey and Gladys (née Spencer) were publicans. Bailey was sent to Prince Alfred College in Adelaide as a school boarder from the age of five.(1)

Chris Bailey is a productivity author and speaker based out of Kingston, Canada. He speaks to audiences around the world about the ways they can accomplish more every day, and is the author of two books: Hyperfocus, and The Productivity Project. Chris Bailey (born 1957) is the co-founder and singer of rock band The Saints. He was born in Nanyuki, Kenya to Irish parents. Bailey grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland until the age of seven, when his family emigrated to Australia. His family settled in Inala, in Brisbane, Queensland and he and his sister Margaret attended Inala State High School, Oxley State High School and Corinda. 3,060 likes 67 talking about this. From the age of 15, Bailey began playing bass guitar with various Adelaide bands. His earliest group was Tattered Sole, which he formed in 1966 while still at school, with James Ashby (guitar/vocals), Rick 'Fred' Frolich (lead vocals), Rob Tillett (lead guitar/vocals), and Bob Wiltshire on drums. In 1967 the band replaced Bob Wiltshire with another schoolmate, John Freeman (drums/vocals), Freddy Frohlich with Richard Tipping (vocals/percussion) and Jim Ashby with Robert 'Jakes' Jacobs on rhythm guitar.(2)(3)

In 1968, Tattered Sole morphed into alternative rock outfit, Red Angel Panic, featuring Rob Tillett (lead guitar/vocals), Chris Bailey (bass guitar/vocals), John Freeman (drums/vocals), Ken Skinner (keyboards) and Robert 'Jakes' Jacobs on rhythm guitar. Chris left the Red Angel Panic in 1971, by which time the line-up featured Rob Tillett (lead guitar/vocals), Chris on bass and vocals, Leon 'Moses' Carmen on keyboards and Peter McCormack on drums. The band reformed in early 1971 with Ron Anderson on bass guitar, Lee Cass on drums, Moses on keyboards and Rob Tillett on lead guitar and vocals. Later that year Peter McCormack rejoined the band, replacing Lee Cass. The band broke up in 1972, when Rob Tillett paralysed three fingers on his left hand after a motor cycle accident. However, Red Angel Panic reformed in 1975, with a stellar lineup, including Chris Bailey (bass), Mick Jurd (lead guitar), Russ Johnson (guitar), Graham Davidge (guitar/flute), Moses (keyboards), John Freeman (drums), and Rob Tillett (vocals). The band later included Graham 'Buzz Throckman' Bidstrup (drums), then when Buzz joined The Angels in 1976, JJ Hackett on drums.(3) Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, described the group's style as 'psychedelic/cosmic blues rock' and they were 'one of the first outfits of the day to espouse a social and political agenda. The band played the college circuit, as well as the usual round of moratoriums and protest marches'.(3) Bailey was recorded on Red Angel Panic's first single, 'Viet Rock'/'Private Investigator' (late 1970) and a number of so far unreleased recordings between 1970 and 1977, which are now being remastered to be released in 2015. In February 1971, Bailey formed Headband with Joff Bateman on drums, Peter Beagley (later known as Peter Head) on keyboards and lead vocals, and Mauri Berg on guitar and lead vocals.(5) McFarlane described this group's style as 'progressive/blues rock ... (they) played everything from blues and jazz to folk and country'.(5) They disbanded in 1974 and, in March the next year, Bailey issued a solo single, 'Sunday Too Far Away', on RCA.(5) Bailey rejoined Head in Mount Lofty Rangers, an 'ad hoc country rock outfit', which had a variable line up including Bon Scott.(5)(6) During 1975 Bailey hosted a music TV series on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Solid Air.(2)(7) Between 1975b and 1977 he rejoined Red Angel Panic (in its Dangerball phase) and recorded quite a number of tracks with the band, which are being remastered to be released in 2015. He had a short stint with another band, Salvation Air Force.(6)

In 1976, he joined pub rockers, The Angels, with Graham Bidstrup (aka 'Buzz Throckman') on drums, John Brewster on rhythm guitar and vocals, his brother Rick Brewster on lead guitar, and Bernard 'Doc' Neeson on lead vocals.(8)(9) Upon joining Bailey 'allowed Neeson to concentrate on his duties as frontman', Neeson had previously played bass guitar for the group.(8) During New Year's Eve 1979, The Angels performed on the Sydney Opera House steps, where Bailey and Neeson both received head cuts requiring stitches from bottles thrown by the audience.(8) Bailey left the band early in 1982 after working on their first five studio albums.(8)

Bailey worked with a range of artists including Gotham City (with former bandmate, Rob Tillett, in 1982),(3) PM, Invisible Men, Wendy Saddington Band, The Famous Nobodies, and Rat Tat Tat.(6)(9) During late 1983, Bailey was living in Sydney and was approached by ABC to join a songwriting team working on a TV pop music drama, Sweet and Sour (July–August 1984).(10) Bailey co-wrote tracks with Bidstrup and Mark Callaghan (ex-Riptides on guitar and vocals), together they formed a pop rock group, Gang Gajang, with Geoffrey Stapleton (ex-The Aliens) on keyboards, guitar and vocals.(11)(12) Bailey remained with the group until his death. Periodically from 2001 he also performed in various line-ups of The Angels.(1)

Personal life(edit)

Just prior to his death, Chris Bailey married his partner, Josie O'Reilly, an actor-comedian, with whom he had a son.(1) In January 2013 Bailey was diagnosed with mouth/throat cancer.(13) The Angels confirmed his condition with a media release in January 2013, '(we) are deeply saddened to learn that our bass player, Chris Bailey, has an aggressive, life-threatening cancer and is now undergoing palliative chemotherapy'.(14) Bailey died of the disease on 4 April 2013, aged 62.(1)(15)(16) A tribute concert, Adelaide Salutes Chris Bailey, was held in his honour on 17 April with proceeds donated to his wife and son.(17) The performers included Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Phil Small, and Don Walker (all of Cold Chisel); James Reyne, his own band Gang Gajang, Swanee with The Brewster Brothers, and The Angels with Dave Gleeson (of The Screaming Jets).(17)

Good Saturday, everyone. It’s another pretty ugly day for many across the bluegrass state as one storm system slowly pulls away. As it moves to our northeast, the next one rolls in from the west late Sunday. This will bring one heck of a temperature spread and a shot of winter weather for some.

Let’s begin with today’s rain as it pushes across central and eastern Kentucky. As low pressure deepens to the northeast, the air gets cold enough for a few flakes in the northeast. Later in the afternoon, the action becomes more scattered from west to east…

Sunday starts quiet, but ends with a bit increase in the action as our winter storm targets the Ohio Valley. Rain, snow and a mix of precipitation works from west to east late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. The north sees mainly snow, with the south seeing mainly rain. In between will be a mixed bag. Here’s the early look at how that may play out…

Accumulating snow is a good bet across parts of the north during this time.

As the low works into Kentucky and West Virginia on Monday, we are going to see a mega temperature spread from north to south. We may see a better than 30 degree difference from northern Kentucky to far southeastern Kentucky. Rain will be the primary precipitation type on Monday.

Once the low goes by to the east, much colder air swings back in from the northwest, giving us some wraparound snow Monday night into Tuesday.

The European Model is similar in bringing our swath of accumulating snow into northern Kentucky. It’s also a little flatter and farther south with the low, keeping the mixed precip line close to northern Kentucky through the entire event. It’s also beginning to see the flakes behind the system…

The Canadian is similar to the above models and looks a lot like the GFS Ensembles with some wraparound light stuff. Once again, check out the stripe of decent snow across northern Kentucky…

It’s been pretty cool to watch the GFS do what we thought it would do and come way south. A few days ago, the model had a low near Detroit. Now it’s crossing eastern Kentucky instead…

The GFS snow map is coming in line with most of the other guidance in targeting northern Kentucky…

As expected, Northern Kentucky is in the best zone for snow and winter weather with this system. Can it still come a little farther south? Yes, but I don’t expect some major deviation at this point.

My midday update may be a little delayed because I will be ringing the Salvation Army Bell at the Fayette Mall today from noon-2. Come on out and say hi and put some money in the kettle and do a little good this Christmas season. 🙂

Seeing as how brown lipsticks are trending right now, I thought I would introduce one of my new favorite lip colors – and compare it to it’s NYX dupe. Most MAC lipliners seem to have a similar color in the NYX line of lipliners, and after doing some research, word on the street is that the NYX liner in ‘Natural’ is a dupe for MAC’s ‘Stripdown’.

Personally, I don’t think these two liners are that close in color. ‘Natural’ is described as a deep-toned beige, while MAC describes ‘Stripdown’ as a creamy brown-beige.

As you’ll see from the above swatch, “Natural” definitely has more warm pink undertones, while ‘Stripdown’ is much more of a browny-beige. Both liners have great pigmentation and a similar creamy texture, making them both easy to apply.

Video games are supposed to be fun. But I often find them frustrating and difficult, which is how I know that they are actually a real hobby, like golf. And as with golf, in order to enjoy video games, you need to practice. That’s where the free tool Aim Lab comes in. It can improve your accuracy, precision, and reaction times in various first-person shooters.

Aim Lab is free on Steam right now. It debuted last year in Early Access, and its development team has continuously updated it to improve its features. Not long ago, it got a login system, so you can now save an ongoing profile. This should help you track your progress over time.

And I am keenly interested in tracking that progress, because my aim is bad right now.

Aim Lab gives players a number of exercises for improving different aspects of aiming with a mouse. You can work on improving your flick responses, your precision on moving targets, and your reaction times on unpredictable targets that require only minor aiming adjustments.

The program also tracks your performance to tell you how well you’re doing. It even gives you “awards” based on exactly how badly you are screwing up. I always get “slow hands” and the game makes a point of telling me that my shots are so wild that no one would refer to what I’m doing as “precision.” You can see how bad I am in the video at the top of the page.

But I want to get better.

My plan is to play through a battery of Aim Lab exercises every day for a month. I’m going to see if I can improve. And if I do, I’ll come back here and tell you all about it. And if I don’t improve, I will probably go spend too much money on better equipment — you know, just like golf.

A little over 22 years ago, my husband and I moved from the Netherlands to California. I found a wonderful voice teacher and a good choir to sing in, but I missed the strong Dutch tradition of hearing and performing Bach’s Passions in the weeks before Easter. I used to have my biggest bouts of homesickness around that time of year. The heartache was softened only by it being my most favorite blooming season in California: the few weeks when two native trees, the purple Western Redbud (Cercis Occidentalis) and the blue-violet wild lilac (Ceanothus) bloom at the same time. Last year I didn’t have any homesickness, because all Passions in the Netherlands or Belgium I could have attended or participated in were canceled, so I didn’t feel I was missing anything. And while the world locked down, at the same time it became more accessible to me, because performances were now being moved to the internet. This meant I could watch the dress rehearsal of Herreweghe’s St. John Passion without the 11-hour plane ride or the struggle with jet lag. This year there were so many online St. Matthew or St. John Passion offerings from the Netherlands it was almost overwhelming. I didn’t have time to listen to all of them before writing this today, because most of the videos didn’t go live until yesterday, Good Friday. So I’ll just focus on a few that stood out to me.

In the category “most interactive creation” I would like to mention the St. John Passion by Zing als vanZelf. An initiative of online singing instructor Bert van de Wetering, this organization invited thousands of singers to record themselves singing the chorales at home in the weeks leading up to Good Friday. They then recorded a performance with professional soloists singing the arias and the choruses with the excellent Combattimento Consort (Cynthia Miller Freivogel, concertmaster) as the orchestra, this all under the direction of Pieter Dirksen. Then they edited all this together into a video where you see the performance from a pretty church in a small town in the Netherlands, but every time there is a chorale you see the “choir” of individual volunteer singers pieced together on the screen. For readers who understand Dutch and would like to learn more about the St. Matthew Passion, I highly recommend the video program from the organization that every year brings performances of this masterpiece to the beautiful Bergkerk in the city of Deventer. This year they recorded four arias from the St. Matthew Passion, in the order they appear in the second half of the work: “Erbarme dich” (sung by countertenor Maarten Engeltjes), “Aus Liebe” (sung by soprano Renate Arends), “Komm, süßes Kreuz” (sung by bass Florian Just), and “Mache dich, mein Herze, rein” (sung by bass Marc Pantus). What I liked best about this video is the conversations director Klaas Stok has with each soloist before they sing their aria. Through these conversations, I gained a lot of new insights into the meaning of the different arias. I especially loved what Klaas Stok had to say about the architecture of the piece, the role each aria plays in the overall structure, and how different movements are connected. Of all the talks, I particularly enjoyed bass Marc Pantus’ take on “Mache dich, mein Herze, rein,” the final aria on the program. You can watch this until April 14. Just click here. Last but not least, the most impressive performance I listened to yesterday and today: The St. John Passion (1725 version) by the Netherlands Bach Society under the direction of René Jacobs. This was shown on Dutch television on Good Friday, so if you don’t understand Dutch, you’ll have to sit through a confusing excerpt from the St. Matthew Passion and a few ads at first, but then you can forward the video 14 minutes, to skip the pre-concert interview with René Jacobs. Soloists are Daniel Johannsen, tenor (Evangelist); Johannes Kammler, bass (Christ); Robin Johannsen, soprano; Alberto Miguélez Rouco, countertenor; Thomas Hobbs, tenor; and Arttu Kataja, bass. There is so much fluidity and phrasing in the orchestra, such a good blend in the choir, as well as excellent enunciation from the choir, it is extraordinary. All the choral movements are extremely transparent, I enjoyed that very much. Jacobs takes some risks with considerably slower tempi in the chorales than is usual in the Historical Performance Practice world, stretching out the pauses in the Evangelist’s recitatives, and taking long fermatas on ending notes, but it is never old-fashioned or too Romantic. It makes for a very engaging, one of a kind performance. All soloists are wonderful, but I would like to give a shout-out to the two tenors: Daniel Johannsen for being an excellent Evangelist, and Thomas Hobbs for his fabulous “Zerschmettert mich” aria (one of the arias that is not in the better known, 1724 version).
