Discuss Josef Albers's reading and keep doing Assignment #3

Today, we discuss Josef Albers's reading and my professor emphasizes the important of practicing. It relates to my last assignment doing a collage. She hopes we can do various options of the colors collage to figure out what the best one is. I think it is interesting to make many options and it becomes crazy to choose which the best is but I enjoy doing it🤣

[Reading - Due March 8th, 2023] The Artist's Voice Josef Albers

After reading The Artist's Voice by Josef Albers, I have to open my mind a lot and think more about how to make anything as Graphic Designer. I love the way he shared what he thought of colors such “color, in my opinion, behaves like man in two distinct ways: first in self-realization and then in the realization of relationships with others”. Color can be the center of the painting but somehow it becomes a factor to govern things around. Also, he mentioned practicing as he said he made any number of preliminary sketches small and kept doing it until he realized what he wanted to do. I think as a creative person, practicing is important. I can make something wrong but what I can learn from this wrong is the important matter. Keeping to practice and trying new experiments for any come-up ideas will help me complete my artwork in the best way.

The reading reminds me of one of my favorite artists Zach Lieberman, he is an artist making art with code. I have followed his Twitter for a long time and he practices and tried new experiments about colors, textures, and everything every single week, and he also completes various versions. It is super crazy when looking at his artwork but he gives me a lot of motivation to do something.

Exercise #5: Emotions in Color

In the exercise, we were initially required to read the article "Beyond the Blues: Poet Mary Ruefle’s Stunning Color Spectrum of Sadnesses" by Maria Popover. After reading it, I realized color is an important element to describing emotions, especially sadnesses. Color helps to express more clearly the nuances of sadness. Moreover, the color becomes a means to help better convey the messages that the author brings through the eyes. Therefore, choosing colors to describe moods is an exercise to deepen my color analysis.

My idea for the assignment I want to express happiness through color. That was why I chose the organic shapes to break the idea down because I think these shapes would help the visuals become more lovely. For the palette, the first one I chose is the color related to spring, I think spring is the season in which everyone feels happy. It has yellow, red, pink orange to metaphor the flowers blooming and green is present for the plant. The second one is a little my bias, I chose those colors to remind the dawn because this time is the healing time for me. I was born and raised in beach city, I saw many beautiful dawns. So whenever seeing it, I always feel calm and tranquil. I want to make the second palette more healing, hence it has some pastel colors but is not too pale.

I finally chose the photo for my final project. I did not know who the author is but the photo is impressive, it has many colors to analysis and do a collage.

[March 3rd, 2023] SCAD Fibers Open Studio

I attended SCAD Fibers Open Studio, an event that is open to give experience the versatility of the SCAD Fibers program and browse work by undergraduate and graduate students. When attending this event, I had an opportunity to participate in hands-on demonstrations and learn more about various techniques such as weaving, dyeing, screen printing, knitting, felting, and embellishment. Therefore, I plan to choose Fiber for my minor. However, I am unsure about this decision because I need to gain knowledge or experience with textiles and fibers. However, I attended the event, and I felt more interested in Fibers, and I want to learn more about that even though it will make me struggle a lot.

One thing I love about the event is that I can know and experiment with various techniques. Besides, I can go through the projects made by undergraduate and graduate students. Looking at their processes making project, I accumulate some inspirations for my future projects. Besides, I was interested in Color Lab, which shows how they make color on fabric scraps in a different medium. I also learned some eco-printing techniques and want to experiment with them in my free time.

Making shapes in PS and Illustrator & Working on the final assignment

Today we learned how to make the shapes in PS and Illustrator so that they can support the final project. I am familiar with those programs, but I still have struggles sometimes. So I think to keep practicing will make it better.

Also, I started to find some articles for the final assignment. I aim to find articles about nature because it contains many colors to analyze. Therefore, I am not still deciding which I want to go with🥹

[Field Trip - February 28th, 2023] SCAD deFINE ART 2023 at SCAD Museum of Art

I went to the SCAD deFINE ART 2023 opening party, and I had an opportunity to experience many works of art from different mediums. I thought Graphic Design is just working on the computer but after the show, I accumulated various inspirations to open my mind to my creative work. It helped me think further about the medium which I can use to break down my idea into the graphic. And the color which the artists used in their works were very impressive and helped me learn more about how to mix colors.

I was impressed with Jorge Pardo's installation when he set up everyday items within the formal setting of the art space. These lamps are alive with color and form, hand-blown glass meticulously arranged.

Critique: Book Cover Resources

[Final Due - February 27th, 2023] Book Cover Resources Assignment

In this assignment, we have to do a book cover front and back and render it in three different ways. I always want to do something to introduce everyone to my hometown, so I think this assignment is an excellent way to do that. I chose “Chò Nâu” (sorry, I do not know how to say it in English), which is a plant that everyone can see a bunch of it around the street when walking or driving. This plant is associated with my childhood and brings many memories between my best friends and me.

For the implementation, I have always struggled with time for building up the ideas. Looking at my Tumblr blog, I sketched many versions and made the final decision at the last minute. My first idea is to present these plants falling in the front and zoom in on one in the back. But after thinking for so long and researching around, I came up with an idea when you open the window, you can see Chò Nâu falling. Then, I researched some pictures of the type of window in my hometown and sketched them. After having the final sketch, I used colored pencils for the monochromatic section. Unfortunately, I thought I matched the wrong colors, so the outcome was not the same as I thought. The color aid took me a lot of time to complete because my sketch had many small details. And I also spent so much time on the painting section it took me time to mix the colors to create the color which I wanted. Moreover, painting some small details was a nightmare.

After doing this assignment, I think I further understand a bezold colored scheme (which I was not familiar with and scared of at first), a triad color scheme, and a monochromatic scheme. Moreover, I did my digital versions and then used those as references. Thus I realized it is too hard to mix the colors like the digital ones. The whole process took entirely of time, but I enjoyed it. The outcomes remind me of many things about my hometown. I have missed home already.
