Argylle (2024)
⭐️⭐️.5
So, I expected a spy thriller. And it was. But it wasn’t so much James Bond as it was Maxwell Smart. If Smart had semi-predictable twists and some wickedly cool fight scenes. My friend and I sat in the 4D chairs for the first time at this show, and let me tell you, they were only worth it for the fight scenes.
Watch this if you:
enjoy cheesy dialogue, I did expect a darker reality but it very much mirrored the Argylle-verse
find comfort in the fact that Henry Cavill and John Cena are partners and Partners TM in this film
can get past the odd references to Apple (guess who’s studio helped out with this movie)

What a wild first 15 mins.
In my head, ballet does equal hell or something like it.
I think if I watched this movie in the 70s, it would have scared the shit out of me.

My Blind Brother (2016)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very complicated characters here. I really enjoyed this film for its real dialogue. For a seemingly simple plot, this was a very complex and layered story. A woman that wants to be better, a man that is in love with her, and his blind brother - as the title suggests.
Of course, the dynamic between the brothers is quite funny. It nearly felt that Kroll and Scott were related.
Watch this if:
you like Adam Scott’s characters with a façade (see: his characters from The Good Place or Inside Job)
an extremely bizarre love triangle is charming to you

Wonka (2023)

I’m not a Timothee Chalamet fan in the slightest, but he really puts his whole pussy into every movie he’s in. So, props. He has such a quirky take on Willy Wonka that made the movie fun. I loved the musical numbers, too! Great choreography and super fun lyrics!
The meshing accents did make the setting of this dilm slightly confusing, but the cute comedy was enough to push that aside for me.
Don’t watch this movie if you ever want to see Hugh Grant in the same light again.

you’re a whimsical chocoholic
you appreciate a go-getter, an underdog

TW: There are scenes of sexual assault and necrophilia (I know, what the hell) in this film (all after the 1 hour mark). Be aware of triggers.

Such a strange, glitzy bildungsroman. I loved the colour palette, lighting effects, and the secondary characters that molded Jesse. However, some scenes are very uncomfortable to watch, given her age.

the themes of exploitation, youth, and beauty aren’t too on the nose for you

The Call (2013)

My butthole was clenched for the entire last half of this movie. Yes, it starts slow, but it also mostly takes place from a call centre, so what do you expect.
I was very obsessed with the motive for the serial killer. My friends and I were trying to piece it together as the movie progressed and it caused a lot of debate. It was very well done.
Was the end worth it? I was left slightly frustrated, but understanding why the plot unfolded the way it did.

you like unconventional crime dramas

TW: The entirety of this film revolves around Tonya Hardings’ experience with emotional and physical abuse from her mother and ex-husband.
“I thought being famous was going to be fun. I was loved for a minute, then I was hated. Then I was a punch-line. It was like being abused all over again, only this time it was by you. All of you. You’re all my attackers too.”
Gut-wrenchingly perfect. Robbie’s performance as Harding was so spectacular. Especially during the makeup scene. The most hated woman in the US, and possibly the world, getting ready to appease the masses.

The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

I’ll be the first to say: she ate that!!!!
I’ve already declared on this blog that I don’t think I’m a found footage fan, but this film caught my eye because of the plot about dementia. I recently had my last grandparent diagnosed with mixed dementia and some days are very good for her, while others cause violent outbursts, irrational phobias and barely any English to express herself. I’ll be the first to admit that I never liked my grandmother before or after her diagnosis, so I guess the demonic aspects of this film was also fitting.
This film did a good job showing how gradual the changes in dementia occurs, I was honestly very intrigued by the informational aspects at the beginning of the film. The editing in the documentary parks may have been a bit cheesy, but I think that it led to a more successful and frightening impact.
Watch this for:
absolutely stellar special effects
very suspenseful POV shots
the helpful information about dementia

Saltburn (2023)

He goddamn masterminded this, but in the weirdest way. I almost wished it was more insane at points, just to really sell the soullessness of Oliver. I did thoroughly enjoy this film, but based on how disgusted/unnerved/fascinated other reviewers were when watching this film, I wanted more sickness.
One cool thing I thought during this movie is the included nudity. During scenes that included kissing and sex, there was no nudity. Instead, nudity was mostly used during scenes of little to no sexual nature, where the character is just sort of bearing it all. The true self is shown during their singularity, not with anyone else.
The class commentary and the theme of needing more, more, more was really well done. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m off to have a nude dance party now. 🪩🕺
Watch this if:
Barry Keoghan being a Sicko is a favourite sub-genre of yours
you like sitting through crazy disturbing sexual tension

Better Watch Out (2017)

What no bitches does to a mf.
The dialogue knocked me off my feet so many times for being stupid and funny. I have been looking for more Christmas horror movies, and this one was such a great one to start with.
The actual meat of this movie is crazy, I kept gasping because of how fucked some sequences were. I was genuinely afraid of the antagonist at times. Especially by the ending. The only thing that could have made it more terrifying was the addition of gore (because most of it is shown off screen or in a flash bang), but I am nitpicking at this point.

you like that poem about ‘the crime of being small’
home invasion with a twist is your cup of tea

Hanukkah on Rye (2022)

If you normally don’t often watch Hanukkah movies, this one is very sweet. Besides the cute love story (times two, sorta) and rocky family dynamics, the food looked so good.
I really liked the intertwining love stories between the main characters in person and by writing the letters. And the comments from their Bubies were hilarious. They really nailed the holiday stress you feel when your family starts asking about your personal life.

you have been looking to expand your holiday movie repertoire (I learned a bit more about Hanukkah while watching this movie)

Mistletoe Connection (2023)

I like a good meet-cute, okay? What’s cuter than bumping into a handsome businessman while being dressed as an elf? Plus, it is easier to like a Hallmark movie when the characters aren’t one-dimensional. I think Kate was a good choice as the main character because she had a bit of mischief in her eyes. Within the first ten minutes, she is sneaking past a secretary, traipsing into a meeting and demanding that she speak to the boss. Does this mischief stay through the entire film? No, which was a letdown.
Watch this if you:
enjoy a festive, romantic movie and can get past the Hallmark dialogue
need a MEET CUTE !!!!!

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan are such an unstoppable duo. This pair with the unsettling score and unconventional camera angles made this super uncomfortable to watch - but in the best way.

Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget (2023)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my favourite movie at two years old, so this is obviously not biased.
This one is up there for my favourite movies within the last two years. Bella Ramsey was such a great addition to the already lovable group.
I love the continuation of this story because the first movie ended with a neat and tidy finish. It was such a good representation of new generations changing the status quo. Every character is just as funny as the first film, and while this one may not be as quotable as the first one, it is a future classic.
(My favourite from the first film is said by Babs: “My whole life flashed before my eyes! …It was really boring.”)
I would not be upset if we got another Chicken Run in the future.
