I've been rewatching all six seasons of Downton Abbey and concluded that basically every episode goes as follows.
Literally any character: The world is changing.
Lord Grantham: But I don't like change!
The World: *changes regardless*
Lord Grantham: Good god!

broke: upstairs carried
woke: neither could have "carried" as it is the contrast between the upstairs and downstairs—not their independent storylines—that is foundational to the show. it is directly oppositional to the premise of the show to separate the two in judgement. the class tension underlays everything and neither "side" could be contextualized without it. the show wouldn't even be downton abbey if it were one side "carrying" the other
bespoke: downstairs carried
