I’ve probably reblogged this before but it is still an accurate representation of my life.
the other night i tried to make a curry and i got chilli burns all over my face, so i thought to myself ‘hang on, doesn’t milk soothe chilli burns? it does’ and i couldn’t google because i couldn’t see so i just had to blindly feel my way to the fridge and pour out a bowl of milk, and then plant my face in the bowl of milk, anyway at that point the rice cooker went off and triggered a power surge which turned my electricity off, which i didn’t notice at first because i had my face in a bowl of milk and when i did emerge from the dairy prison i thought i had gone blind with chilli burns. so no i don’t really cook much.

If you ever need proof that men hate women, just watch how violently and how angrily and how indignant they act when a woman says “my personal experiences combined with the experiences of my female loved ones have made me afraid of you collectively”.
“Fuck you, that’s stupid, not every man is like that.” Maybe not, but you clearly are.
When men say this, it has nothing to do with making women feel safer or changing women’s minds about men. It has everything to do with silencing women through insults and fear. It is an entirely self serving act when a man tells a woman not to fear men. They don’t care about women’s safety or peace; they care how women’s suspicion going into any interaction with them is affecting a man’s ability to do what he wants with her later.
I have never seen a man say “not all men” and come from a place of “I want women to feel safe because I want them to be happy”. It always comes from a place of “I want women to feel safe because their fear is inconvenient to me; it prevents them from going on dates with me, it makes them question my intentions when we are alone, it makes them more apt to notice when they are being treated unfairly, it makes them less likely to leave themselves vulnerable to me emotionally and physically, and it makes me uncomfortable that I may have to tell other men to behave, so I’d rather continue to harass the women who are already afraid of me by silencing them.”

You Are Not My Responsibility
Can we talk some more about how guilt tripping someone for not being interested in you is a really shitty thing to do? Look, I’m sorry you’re lonely or depressed or  whatever. Those are bad things and having to deal with them isn’t fun. But I am not responsible. It is not my job to sacrifice my autonomy to make you feel better. Your attraction to me does not make your well-being my responsibility. And to use your unhappiness as a tool to coerce me into a relationship or a sexual situation that I’m not comfortable with makes you a bad person.
Anybody who’s had to put up with this kind of emotional manipulation - you deserved better. You always deserve better. And you aren’t wrong to say no.

This actually makes me really, really frustrated--no, angry--because they copped out of this by having Natasha refuse to touch the hammer during their “can you lift it?” hero pissing contest, which still allowed her to have the “I’m such a monster and so awful. PLEASE LOVE ME AND VALIDATE ME, BRUCE BANNER!” scene later. Because if Nat had actually picked up the hammer, she would then have reason to come to terms with her personal history and realize that she is capable of redeeming herself on her own without earning the love of a man.
We couldn’t have that after credit scene because it would mean the MCU would have to stop giving Nat the short shrift, and they’re obviously not ready to do that.

I get a lot of messages asking whether or not mental illness “counts” as invisible illness. Mental Illness is, unquestionably, a form of invisible illness. It requires daily attention and can be just as life threatening as physical disabilities. Accessing care is difficult and often stigmatized.
You are not alone. Do whatever you need to do to break down barriers and get better care.
This is a great masterpost filled with mental health resources .
This is a list of some phone apps for mental health.

It is time to continue our mini-series of Andrew Lang fairy books! This post will be featuring three of these beauties: The Olive Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, and The Yellow Fairy Book.
First up is my personal favorite, The Olive Fairy Book, which was published in 1907. The cover features two fairies: one that is the focal point of the cover design, and another smaller one riding a bat that can be seen in the lower right-hand corner. Luckily, this is another one of Lang’s fairy tales in our holdings that still has its dust cover! The back of the cover advertises the previous books in this series, along with other stories Lang edited.
Published in 1892, The Green Fairy Book was originally supposed to be the last in a three part series of fairy books by Lang. Lang states in the preface “To the Friendly Reader - This is the third, and probably the last, of the Fairy Books of many colours.” It is safe to say that the popularity of these tales attributed to the continuation of the series.
Finally, we have The Yellow Fairy Book, which was published in 1894. Along with the fairy design on the cover, this book also has a little cat and mouse image on the spine. The last illustration, which comes from The Yellow Fairy Book, is from the Estonian fairy tale “The Dragon of the North”.

Jurassic World, Mad Max Fury Road, and Little Girls
For her birthday, we took my soon-to-be six year-old to Jurassic World. Prior to that, she had watched a bootleg copy of Fury Road with me after I had confirmed that it fit the levels of violence I consider acceptable based on what I know of my daughter.
The most interesting thing to me was her reactions after each film.
After watching MMFR, she talked incessantly about it. (She had talked during the film as well, making observations, etc.) Her name was suddenly changed to Angry Cereal, mirroring two of her favorite characters. She made a new Sims game, spending more time than she ever had before perfecting the characters - and giving them all pets. A Lego car set was turned into a crazy car that could fit into the Mad Max world. Barbies were now the Wives and her dad’s Diablo figurine was now Immortan Joe. It’s been a little over two weeks and she still talks about it.
When the credits rolled on Jurassic World, she said, ‘Can we go see another movie?’ –And that was it. The only other comment vaguely related to the movie was her assertion she liked dinosaurs. Nothing else. No elaborate recreations, nothing.
I had thought with MMFR that my excitement had rubbed off on her but that doesn’t seem to be the case. After Jurassic World, I was excited, encouraging her to talk about her favorite parts. She asked for a Happy Meal. When we went to spend a gift card at Toys-R-Us the next day, I pointed out all the Jurassic World toys. They had Blue! She barely gave them a second glance.
It didn’t jive. She had tons of dinosaur books. Why was she infinitely more interested in an adult movie that was pretty much one big car chase rather than a movie about dinosaurs? Was it because despite the differences in ratings, Jurassic World had frightened her more? Maybe. But when she picked out a new stuffed animal to buy with her gift card, she informed us the little owl’s name was Splendid.
And that was it.
She had watched Fury Road in almost complete silence until the first shot of all the Wives. Then she turned to me and said, “There’s so many girls!” That was her takeaway from MMFR: there were lots of girls! All the girls were fighting together against the bad guy! The girls were the heroes! That was important to her, seemingly even more important than it was to me. Maybe because she’s just getting her first taste of playground culture where boys and girls are separate and the two don’t mix often and it’s been confusing. Maybe because she just really liked seeing girls on the screen. When I ask her, she just shrugs and says, “I don’t know, mommy, I liked all the girls. I liked Toast.”
As an adult, I’m aware of issues with representation. I don’t remember consciously noticing it as a child but I remember Leia and Uhura and Janeway being my favorites. I remember dressing up as Dana Scully. As a mom, I watch my daughter gravitate to girls and women on screen. A movie I thought would a sure thing because DINOSAURS! became a total miss because for her, there was no one on screen that she left the theater wanting to dress up as. There was no incentive for her to change her name to mimic favorite characters. I left grinning because holy shit, raptor squad! She left wanting a cheeseburger.
