Fujimoto is absolutely brilliant at designing good visual horror but I genuinely think the absolute scariest panels in all of Part 1 are these two. The idea that history as we know it is already changed, but also that there is shit out there so horrible that it needed erasing that we, the real world audience, don't even know about is such a genius use of our fear of the unknown. He mixes in real-world tragedies with made-up ones to completely disorient the reader's sense of history so what we feel is matched by the other characters. To them, they don't even remember the Nazis or Nuclear Weapons or the AIDS epidemic. To us, SOA and Arnolon Syndrome and the Mt. Hio eruption evoke the same feeling. What the hell is she talking about? What is so horrible that it had to be erased from existence? It's absolutely incredible writing. I hope I can achieve that level of chilling horror someday.
