Weekly Progress Report

That's right the habit's continuing! Still spinning my wheels, trying to manage a lot. I'm finding myself in a very transitional phase of my life right now, in...a lot of ways. This month in particular has seen me start a lot of the bigger ones.

Forewarning, I may no longer go by Timepool in the near future. I think I've already decided, but I...gotta wait a week or so til I can get a new domain and change my website-- I'd like to wait til that's secured before I switch everywhere else. At the same time, I'm working through the legal process of getting my name changed!

Even so, she doesn't even have any red in her design to begin with, she's wearing pink instead! The name still doesn't fit! "Rogue" still seems more fitting to me, even thematically.

I don't think it sounds particularly bad as a name either tbh, especially considering she's in a series where you see characters with names like "Knuckles," "Big," and even fucking "Doctor Eggman."

I've got what I call "mad facts"-- useless trivia/factoids that make me mad every time I remember them.

Here's a few;

- Rogue the bat's name is actually Rouge and pronounced "rooj." FUCK YOU. NO IT ISN'T.

- The fact that there is a difference between "lay" and "lie." My brain can't remember them. I re-learn the difference literally every other week and just forget. IT'S LINGUISTICALLY USELESS. THEY'RE THE SAME WORD NOW I WON'T PLAY MS. ENGLISH'S BULLSHIT GAME ANYMORE.

- The Outer Worlds / The Outer Wilds. EVERY TIME I TALK ABOUT EITHER GAME THERE HAS TO BE A STUPID TANGENT WHERE I SECOND GUESS WHICH NAME IS CORRECT, AND THEN SOMEONE ASKS WHICH GAME I MEANT AND WE BOTH LOOK LIKE FUCKING IDIOTS. I DEMAND A BOXING MATCH BETWEEN THEIR LEAD DEVELOPERS. LOSER CHANGES THEIR LEGAL NAME TO "THE OUTER WOIRLDS" SO THEY NEVER FORGET WHAT THEY'VE DONE.

As someone with (suspected) dyscalculia I fucking hated playing DND. Like this take is so bizarre to me, I don't know what game they're playing if they think it's easy on that front, because it SO is not.

Sometimes I'd find myself having to sit there and stop the entire game for a solid 5+ minutes to calculate like, 5 modifiers at once just to know how much damage I dealt. I'd have to redo my math like 3 times or have someone correct me often. It's awful I hate hate hate that. And it got SO much worse when I started DMing!

Anon here is gonna have their socks blown off when they find there are games that don't even use dice at all! There's a whole subgenre of coin toss games! I've even made one! Some games have zero random resolution mechanics and rely on "yes, and" type play!

If you've got math problems similar or likely worse than me who, again, is only suspected of having dyscalculia-- you are probably having similar friction points with DND that I used to. I'd very strongly consider looking into other games on the lighter end of the spectrum, you will have a lot more fun.

Games like LUMEN, Lasers & Feelings, Risus, are all on the simpler end. Take a look through Itch and look for one pagers and the like! I'd recommend a coin toss game, but I'm physically disabled and coin tossing Hurts, so I honestly haven't played many of those. I'd love to see others pop in with some!

DND is probably hurting this anon like it did me and I hope they break free from it in due time.

You do of course understand that the reason most people prefer DND 5E is that it's one of the easiest systems to learn? Like I'm sorry it's all well and good to 'break up the cultural monopoly' but I have Dyscalculia and DND is seemingly the only tabletop system that doesn't consistently ask me to do a hefty amount of complex math. I've never given WOTC a penny but the reason I've primarily played 5E over basically everything else is it's the only system that was extremely easy to learn and completely self explanatory. (Also - I like elves and magic and shit.) You roll one dice to see if you can do a thing, you add whatever your plus or minus is, and then roll damage where appropriate. Easy. Meanwhile seemingly everything else is like "Okay so you roll two dice except sometimes it's four and then you take this stat and you divide it by that dice roll and then you add a number equivalent to the day of the week unless it's a leap year then you times that by three and if you get a prime number you can lift that coffee cup." Like have you ever heard of Villains and Vigilantes, for instance? It's fucking insane.Like I'm not saying I don't get why you wanna make this point? But I feel like I have to point out that most people who make indie TTRPG's don't seem to focus on accessibility when designing their systems and they are EXTREMELY intimidating for new players. And often, what people who are big into TTRPG's do is assume that because THEY fully understand this system and how it works, new players will too just as easily. The amount of times I've spoken to a GM, said "This sounds a bit complicated", and they've gone "No no no it's easy" and then described the most complicated set of rules I've ever heard is ridiculous.

Okay it sounds you’ve had a very narrow range of experiences with RPGs then because D&D 5e is on the higher end of complexity when it comes to RPGs and most indie RPGs are actually a lot less complex than D&D 5e. Like, Villains & Vigilantes is not the median when it comes to RPG complexity. There are systems even lighter than D&D out there. :)
