Lucy loved the scent of the lilacs that grew in her hometown of Jamestown, New York so much that she had some shipped from out east and attempted to grow them in her yard. Though California lilacs exist, Ball preferred the northeastern variety that thrives in cooler areas of the U.S. and Canada and bloom in May or June. Not discouraged by the mixed results she had attempting to grow upstate New York lilac trees in warm, sunny Southern California, she finally had one take when she planted it in a shady, cooler corner of her garden, delighting in the sweet-scented purple blossoms every time they bloomed.
