Jamie and His Children: Fergus Addendum

When I made my Jamie and His Children post the other day, I unintentionally focused only on his biological children leaving Fergus out of my analysis. So here is my special Fergus Addendum. 

Fergus is the first of Jamie and Claire’s adopted children and how they arrive at that relationship in the show is far more pronounced than in the books. In the books, Jamie doesn’t really call Fergus his son until (Spoiler) Fergus and Marsali’s wedding. But in the show the emotional connections between the Frasers and Fergus go deeper faster and they claim him as their son jointly, as opposed to the book where it comes from Jamie) before Culloden. With these three, that familial relationship is very much a choice they each make. Fergus is originally hired by Jamie but because of Fergus’ age, there’s obviously a degree of protection both he and Claire feel towards Fergus. I’d say those feelings shift from general responsibility for a minor to genuinely parental feelings around 2x06 when Fergus accompanies Jamie to Le Havre. For me personally, that scene with Jamie returning to the house and having breakfast with Fergus feels like the shift for Jamie and then Claire comforting Fergus after learning of BJR’s attack in 2x07 feels like the final shift for Claire. One of the reasons I wish we had so much more of Lallybroch in 2x08 is because we didn’t get to see nearly enough of how all three of them dealt with the loss of Faith and settling back into life in Scotland. Either way, when Fergus rides out on that donkey, he claims Jamie and Claire as his. Not the Murrays but specifically Jamie and Claire. They’re still not using familial language with each other but that’s when they all acknowledge their choice to be a family. I loved that we have heard Jamie refer to Fergus as mon fils again since Claire’s return and her greeting of Fergus was quintessentially maternal. He may still call them milord and milady but that’s pretty much just his version of mum and dad and you can hear it in the way he says it. 

In many ways, Fergus’ relationship with Jamie (and Claire) is going to wind up reflecting Jamie’s relationship with Brianna. While Jamie is Bree’s biological father, in practice they’re strangers to each other. They won’t actively have a parent/child relationship until they both choose it. It is a choice they will make but also a relationship they will have to work at and find together. Just as Fergus had to choose Jamie and Claire and decide to follow their lead as parental figures, Brianna will have to choose that kind of relationship with Jamie when she finally meets him. Unlike Fergus, Brianna has preconceived notions of what having a father is like and that will be an added challenge for her and Jamie to navigate. But I am SO excited to see how all of this plays out on screen. I can see Fergus (and Young Ian) and how they interact with Jamie having an influence over Bree as she feels things out (and vice versa). 

I am not sure how I feel about this episode? 

I wasn’t too thrilled about the changes from the book...though at the same time I do kind of understand them...Claire’s need to be a doctor and her 20th century mindset, her way of living that she cannot easily forget.

I agree that the “affection” between Jamie and Claire that was in over abundance (not complaining at all - just observing) in the last episode was a little starved but...at the same time, with all that was going on, high tense situation, could really expect them to be making googly-eyes at each other? 

Jamie’s speech about how he’d give up everything for her was sweet and they did have a few hand touches and hand holds. Could there have been more? Yes. 

The arguing between them I think was normal - they haven’t seen each other in 20 years, they both have changed. The night before they were in their own little world, just each other, just enjoying the newness of being back together...but they can’t stay on cloud 9 forever and unfortunately they were thrust into a high tense situation where, as Jamie said in the previous episode, they know each other less than they did when they first wed. They need to understand the changes they both have been through...they will come around...they always do (the next episode not withstanding...) 

The reunion between Ian and Claire was so sweet! 

Young Ian is a precious muffin and I’m so excited we get to keep him around for a long while!

Also the relationship between Fergus and Young Ian is the greatest.

Not my favorite episode - probably my least favorite out of all so far but it happened, its over, continuing on..
