Lisa McVey was 17 years old when she came home from work with a plan to commit suicide. However, on her way home she fought for her life instead. While riding her bike, Bobby Joe Long threatened her while blindfolding and binding her and then putting her in his van and thing driving away into the night. McVey was raped numerous times in the his apartment.
McVey was able to escape Long by gaining his trust. She pretended to pity Long and then made up a story that she was an only child who was taking care of her sick father. Long took sympathy on McVey and dropped her off at a trauma center. McVey was thankful to be alive.
Because of Lisa McVey, Bobby Joe Long was ultimately caught and put on death row. Long died by lethal injection on 23 May 2019.
Lisa McVey is now a sheriff’s deputy and attended the execution.

Ted Bundy admits to psychiatrist Dorothy Lewis that on the night of the Chi Omega murders, his primary victim was Cheryl Thomas. He also admitted to watching her through her window for most of the night. Fortunately, she later survived his brutal attack but was left with permanent injuries.
Ted: [..] I remember on a particular night going down there, decided to do something… watching her through the window, she was getting… ready to go out. Her leaving the door open. And going in, going in and setting things up so that I could get in later on. And then waiting, going home and drinking some more, drinking heavily. Of course I’d been in jail for a year or two, so the alcohol was particularly potent. And then going back at midnight or so and seeing that she’d just got home, but the light was still on, and then saying I’ll wait ‘till she goes to sleep, I’ll go back and drink some more.
Lewis: So twice you went back there.
Ted: Yes, but between the place where I lived and the house I was walking back, just happening to be walking along the road, and I was just all aroused full of energy, you know peaked for this. I happened to look over across the street casually and I saw a door open to a sorority house. And I just turned and walked right for the door, That’s what happened.

On 8 March, 1921, the battered body of a young boy aged between five to seven was discovered floating in pond in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He had been bludgeoned to death before being dumped in the pond. It was theorised that he could have been in the pond for a number of months before being found. He was wearing expensive clothing which indicated that he may have come from an affluent background. He became known as “Little Lord Fauntleroy.” Despite coming from a seemingly wealthy background, nobody ever claimed his body. He was displayed at a local funeral home and a $1000 reward was offered to anybody who could identify him but this failed to generate any information and his true identity, or why he was brutally murdered, remains unknown.

Born on the 5th of August, 1990, Asha Jacquilla Degree grew up to be a quiet and shy young girl. She was a good student at Fallston Elementary School in Shelby, North Carolina, and enjoyed playing basketball. She was somewhat isolated from the outside world; her parents forbid the internet and TV and were god-fearing church goers. Asha was an extremely timid little girl, in fact, she was wary of almost everything.
At approximately 8PM on the 13th of February, 2000, 9-year-old Asha went to bed. When Asha’s father, Harold, returned from work at approximately 12AM, he checked on his children who were fast asleep. He checked once again at 2:30AM and saw them both fast asleep once again. She slept in the same bedroom as her brother who later recalled that he heard noises in the early morning hours but just assumed it was Asha turning and tossing in her sleep. However, in reality, Asha was actually packing her book bag with clothing and personal items. She then crept out of the house in the dead of the night.
At around 3:45 - 4:15AM, two drivers saw her walking along Highway 18. Another witness saw her and turned his car around to ask her what she was doing. A young child out on her own at that time of the night certainly wasn’t normal. Especially considering the weather was so grim - it was windy and the rain was lashing down. When he went to approach her, she darted off into the woods. This was the last time Asha was ever seen. When her mother, Iquilla, went to wake the children up for school at around 6:30AM, she found her missing. Police dogs were unable to pick up any scent from Asha. That was potentially because the heavy rain had washed away any scent of her. When the news of her disappearance broke, the three drivers who had spotted her walking along the road came forward to relay what they had seen. There was absolutely no sign of Asha until two days later, when candy wrappers, a pencil, and a Mickey Mouse hair bow were found in a shed in the woods where Asha was spotted running into. They were identified as her belongings by her parents.
Investigators announced that they believed she had left her home on her own accord. They later announced that they theorised she had been abducted along the way. This grim theory was even more believable when Asha’s bookbag was unearthed during a construction project along Highway 18. It had been wrapped in a plastic bag and then buried. In 2013, Asha’s mother took to the media to express her disgruntlement that Asha’s case didn’t garner much media attention. She believed it was because Asha was African American: “Missing white children get more attention. I don’t understand why,” she said.
The leads eventually dwindled to a standstill until 2016 when the FBI announced that there was a new lead. Asha may have been spotted climbing into an early 1970s green Lincoln Continental Mark IV or a Ford Thunderbird. The case currently remains open and these leads are being investigated.

“One of the reasons it seemed so organic for Will to go over the cliff with Hannibal at the end was that, in his mind, as he understood the universe in his world, he had peaked. It’s also stopping a monster and stopping himself from becoming a monster, but I think part of him was thinking, “That was beautiful. I don’t think I can do that again and feel as high as I do now.” Everything overwhelmed him and he went over that cliff because there was an apex to his experience, in a way that was poetic and dramatic.” — Bryan Fuller

Very rarely do we hear about kidnap victims escaping alive, and those very same victims sympathizing with their captors. Such is the case of Natascha Kampusch, who was abducted at the age of 10 on March 2, 1998, in Vienna, Austria. Her kidnapper, Wolfgang Přiklopil, confined her in a small cell beneath the garage. The hidden room was dark, soundproof, and had no windows. For the first six months of her captivity, Natascha was barred from ever leaving her chamber, but slowly, she was granted permission to spent time upstairs only when her captor was home. Every night, she was sent back to her chamber. On a typical day, the two would get up early each morning and eat breakfast together. Natascha spent much of her time cleaning and cooking for her captor, and her favourite pastimes were reading, listening to the radio, and watching television, although she was only allowed to watch taped programs and listen to foreign stations so she could not be aware of the nationwide search for her. As punishment, Přiklopil would beat the young girl so badly that she was unable to walk and starve her, threatening to kill her if she ever tried to escape. Often, Natascha fantasized about chopping his head off with an ax. Shortly after her 18th birthday, she was allowed to go out in public with Přiklopil but was warned she would be killed if she tried to attract attention. They even went on a skiing trip at a resort where Natascha claimed she had no opportunity to escape. But finally, on August 23, 2006, that opportunity arrived. While the pair were in the backyard washing his car, Přiklopil stepped away to take a phone call. Quickly she made her escape, running through streets and jumping over fences and calling for help. She was promptly brought to the police station and Přiklopil, knowing for sure the police were looking for him, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. After eight years of captivity, Natascha was finally free.
Natascha cried profusely upon learning her captor was dead. She seemed to sympathize with him, even lighting a candle for him at the morgue. She stated she felt ‘’more and more sorry for him’’ and referred to him as a ‘’poor soul’’. Many psychologists proposed she was suffering from Stockholm syndrome. However, Natascha strongly rejected this diagnosis, saying that it’s disrespectful and disallows her to reflect on and talk about the complex bond she shared with her kidnapper. Today, she is now a spokesperson for the animal rights group, PETA.

On February 19, 2015, 16-year-old Becky Watts had vanished from her home in Bristol, England, without a trace. She had taken her phone, tablet, and laptop with her, but didn’t seem to take any clothes or money, nor did she tell anyone where she was going. The following day, her parents reported their daughter missing. Word spread around quick about Becky’s unusual disappearance and an online campaign was launched using the hashtag #FindBecky on social media which garnered the attention of 2 million people worldwide. Sadly, all hope of the teen girl’s return was spoiled when less than two weeks later, Becky’s body was discovered in eight separate parts and a 28-year-old man and his girlfriend were charged with the crime. The man was confirmed to be her very own stepbrother, Nathan Matthews. An additional five were also charged with assisting an offender. Nathan and his girlfriend allegedly shared twisted sexual fantasies that centered around teenage girls. On February 19, 2015, Nathan entered his stepsister’s room with the intention of kidnapping her. He immediately applied Sellotape over her mouth and warned her, ‘’As long as you do as you’re told you are going to be fine.’’ He then handcuffed her and tried wrestling her into a suitcase, using his hands to restrict her breathing which resulted in her being suffocated to death. When Nathan checked for a pulse and found none, he took her to a garden shed owned by friends, dismembered her using a knife and saw, then carefully packaged her body parts into bags and boxes. Nathan was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 33 years, and his girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, was sentenced to 17 years.
