Masterharper Robinton and his Bronze firelizard Zair. For you dragon fans out there if you're really into modern dragon riders books, check out Pern. It's the place most your fave lore bits started!
Robinton here is my favorite character! Not only is he an incredible musician and composer, he's also a really stand up human being. Great teacher, good friend, my husband ... Oops did I say that aloud lol.
Dragonriders of Pern won my fanart poll for this month! Check my page for future polls and have a say in what I draw next!

When a Pern fan procrastinates…
8th/9th pass Weyr leadership
Between the red lines every cell is one year, otherwise they’re just roughly proportional. I have no clue who this helps, but I had fun with it!

Gold Asterath was caught by Green Hecatath in a surprise upset at Ista Weyr after a long and stormy flight! That means we are opening for our second PC clutch. This clutch is player-run and will have a theme of Beasts of the Wild. We're open now for OOC candidate signups and taking volunteers for egg writing, with eggs due and Touchings starting the week of April 7th.
Ista Weyr is a traditional faction and this clutch will deal with the fallout from the nontraditional pairing, mutations, and lots of other fun, toothy RP scenarios.

Another random one from the collection: the Colin Saxton edition of Dragonsinger (Sidgwick & Jackson, 1977).
Sariel's Guide to Pern has a whole page dedicated to him (here), and while it's hard to find images of his work online now the old Pern Museum did have the colour version of this artwork.
It's only available on the Wayback Machine now: check it out here.

It's much easier to find photos of his cover art for Dragondrums (here), which was originally created as a poster for the World Science Fiction Convention in 1972 by Anne.

I've been lucky to get my mitts on a lot of Pern editions, but some of my favourite are the (signed!) original Analog magazines featuring the short stories that went on to become Dragonflight (Weyr Search, Dragonrider Parts 1 and 2)!
Whatever you think of the text, you had to admit John Schoenherr did a great job of the illustrations! In McCaffrey's own words: "You did me and my dragons real proud" (Reactor Magazine, 2014)
The text is different in places, but both begin with the fantastic first line: "Less woke, cold."
(Shown below, the second page of Dragonflight, Corgi 1982 edition, and the first two pages of Weyr Search.)

the mad queen's first clutch with her last mate.. i had to do a little rough sketch showing the beak haha
Lenath (pictured in threat display, scrunching her muzzle to display the wicked point of her internal beak) later became known as the 'mad queen', but it's debatable on whether she was truly irrational and murderous, or whether she was being harshly controlled by her rider and made a scapegoat against her will.
she actively interfered in the hatching of this clutch, trying to prevent the weyrleader's enemy's son from impressing a hatchling - first by corralling the bronze babies away from the candidates, and then, when that didn't work, trying to kill the hatchling, Nelath, that eventually did show signs of impressing the kid. she snatched up Nelath in her jaws and would have crushed him to death had bronze Mercith, Lenath's ex-mate, appeared from between to fight her in the nesting grounds. Her current mate, the weyrleader's dragon, came ostensibly to subdue her, as well, but in the chaos it was impossible to tell whether he was helping or hindering her (their riders were having a fistfight in the stands probably)
the dust cleared, revealing smashed hatchlings and candidates, and Mercith dead on the ground (and his rider, the boy's father, comatose). Lenath, her rage spent, fled the arena with her mate. But within Mercith's coiled paws were both baby Nelath and his new rider, injured but alive, and protected by the bronze's last actions.
with the junior queen of the weyr being still too young to replace Lenath and the dogmatic loyalty of dragons to their queen impossible to contend with, Lenath continued her duty.
muddying the waters was the harper boy who'd snuck into the hatching and impressed a green; it was later reported that his presence, as someone who was not chosen or Searched, was what enraged Lenath and caused her to lose her wits.
in truth, it was a deliberate conspiracy by the weyrleader and weyrwoman to secure their own futures in power, cutting out any potential rivals, or their rivals' children, from being able to unseat their dynasty.
the fact that their rival's boy ended up impressing a brown dragon was his only saving grace; had he gotten a bronze, they would have found some other way to remove them from the picture.

A few Pernese dragon head concepts, based on different animal skulls, the author's descriptions, and Michael Whelan's art. To meet the book descriptions, Pernese dragon must have eye ridges, head knobs instead of ears, a wide field of vision through multifaceted eyes, smooth suede-like skin, and jaws capable of both grinding stone and predating large animals. I also decided to play around with the spectrum of Bronze while coloring the designs. I decided the Bronze palette should be a blend of Gold, Green, and Brown.
Equine: Classic horse headed Pernese dragon. Anne McCaffery described her dragons as having 'horse-like' heads, which could mean anything from wedge-shaped with large cheeks to recognizably equine.
Giraffine: This is how I pictured the dragons while reading the books as a kid. Giraffe and Okapi skulls look very draconic, have both knobs and ridges, and big globular eyes.
Ursine: Leaning more into the predatory nature of fire lizards and dragons, here is a design with bite power. Based on a Giant Panda skull with the snout elongated. This design has a bulky skull with massive jaws. A well-developed cranium, zygomatic arch and sagittal crest.
Varan: As much as Anne McCaffery insists her dragons are not reptilian, a monitor lizard skull makes a great design base. They have wedge-shaped heads with incredible bite force, perfect for crushing firestone. The fire lizard progenitor to the Pernese dragon is a coast scavenger and piscivore; a monitor head shape is perfect for both tasks. Perhaps fire lizards would look more delicate, like a tree monitor, while dragons would look more like a rock monitor.
Whelan-like: Michael Whelan's amazing cover art was what drew me to pick up Pern books in the first place. But his designs do not have head knobs and the anatomy is very 'shrink-wrapped' so I've tried to address those issues while keeping it recognizably "Whelan."
Alien: Not based on any earth skull. Bulbous eyes oriented high on the head to see Threadfall. Large surface area for nasal turbinates to warm/humidify the vast quantities of air required by a flying creature, and to filter out Thread char. Head knobs less bony, more fleshy and flexible. Still vaguely "horse-like" shape to the head.
