So I just finished watching #Moxie... and I have a lot of feelings about it. A lot.
I decided to watch it after seeing the trailer. The characters seemed lovable, it was a diverse cast with LGBTQ and POC characters and a good soundtrack always suckers me in.
It was easy to get wrapped up in the movie in the beginning. The characters are fun to watch and identifiable in that cheesy "High School Movie" kind of way. But very quickly things began to go wrong.
As the movie progressed I kept waiting to get more story from the other POC characters in the cast and not just the main white female protagonist. They were lively and incredibly fun to watch and I wanted to know more about them. But the movie never gave me the chance.
Terms like white privilege and white savior began coming to minds and I felt myself falling into a very cynical spiral.
At the climax of the movie, as the again, white female protagonist laments and basically throws a tantrum of how "the world is against her and she's the only one who cares!", you can't help but roll your eyes.
Even when the movie tries to self-reflect it falls flat. It feels like a group of white adults sat in a room and just picked out hashtags till they had a movie. When Claudia calls her Vivian a coward for not taking the fall for Moxie, I thought, finally! We'll get some actual modern feminist story telling!
But no, Vivian pulls an even more brazen stunt and is suddenly the hero of the school again.
I would like to think that Amy Pohler had good intentions and really wanted to bring to the spotlight the issues that are important to women in a bright and exciting way. But it just doesn't quite get there.

“Books became her friends and there was one for every mood. There was poetry for quiet companionship. There was adventure when she tired of quiet hours. There would be love stories when she came into adolescence and when she wanted to feel a closeness to someone she could read a biography. On that day when she first knew she could read, she made a vow to read one book a day as long as she lived.”

there’s nothing quite like reading a book and being like AHA I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE, and feeling immensely clever when it’s just…….plot

25-35 is such a weird fucking age because you’re 100% a bread-and-butter Standard Edition Millennial but the cool teens are like “ok boomer” because you have a Real Job but the actual Boomers at your job are like “I’m not going to listen to a literal fucking child” as they download 16 self-replicating viruses and meanwhile the Gen Xers are telling you to refinance a mortgage for a house you don’t have and you’re sitting there at the Adults Table with the pretty tasty casserole you cooked because you’ve finally figured out how to do that now but everyone is eating the Boomer’s store-bought macaroni instead and admittedly they do sort of taste similar so it probably wasn’t worth all the trouble of cooking from scratch and you’re trying to comfort the freshly-graduated sobbing 22-year-old next to you because she just woke up here and doesn’t know where she is but you have like maybe 5k dollars in a savings account labelled RETIREMENT that grows approx. twelve cents a year and you keep eating dry macaroni while smiling incomprehensibly and periodically blacking out like ??????????
