ooc: my warlock in my in person game might be changing sub classes from fey to fiend... but he's a changeling and i want to keep fey presence but his charisma modifier is plus 7 so if he ever kills anyone on fiend sub class he gets that plus his warlock level added for temp hit points... do any of you dnd enthusiasts have suggestions for how i handle this (mind you my dm is open to homebrewing some stuff like he is very likely going to allow me to keep fey presence but i would have to give up the level 1 fiend thing which is the temp hit points)

Caleb laughs, "I don't mind, you are a wonderful teacher." The laugh turns into a smile filled of mirth. "I learn more than just magic from you Schatz," he said as he planted a gentle kiss on the other's mouth as Essek cupped his cheek.
"I meet Beauregard tomorrow at first light," he said the smile he had slowly fading, settling on something bittersweet at the promise of a memory. "I would like that. I shall be as hasty as I can, as long as you aren't," he said that mirth returning again, this time more in his eyes.
HE SMILES AS CALEB PRESSES THEIR FOREHEADS TOGETHER, and issues an innocent command. The compliment is flattering, though a little uncomfortable. He knows he's slightly smarter ( they'd seen it in Aeor, with their flight speeds ), but it feels vain to acknowledge it. Caleb was brilliant, and intelligent in ways Essek was not.
" Only for now, " he said, with a smile, " I have a few years on you, young man. " Caleb would likely grow equally intelligent over time. Essek leaned his head back, cupped Caleb's cheek, and ran his thumb over the human's bottom lip.
" How long until you depart? " he asked, and smiled, trying to make the expression playful despite the pain in his heart, " I want to give you a memory. Something to encourage you to return to your drow as quickly as possible. "

That might be the case. Caleb would beg to differ, but that was years of training and trauma that were speaking. Caleb's sense of self worth is still working on building itself back up. "I am certain you will, and I want it no other way." Caleb would only want to be reprimanded by Essek. It is the only time he felt fully okay with it, because he trusted Essek implicitly. He knew if something happened Veth would lecture him as well, but that was different. His relationship with Veth was not something he could compare to his with Essek. And things that could happen that were similar had different notes to them. "I am sure we will both do something to deserve it."
He smiled a bit, "I know, but you must be careful. Stick to the plan, do not come as a first reaction." He went and touched Essek's forehead with his own sort of like a cat, "You have a very good brain, use it. No one is smarter than you Schatz."
HE FELT SO SECURE IN CALEB'S GRASP, and it was at odds with the fear in his stomach. He'd be losing this- the very comfort that was given to him now. Gods, what if he was wrong? What if he was sending his lover to his doom?
He rubbed Caleb's back when he said he was scared, one hand going up to grasp the nape of his neck. " As are you, " he said, his voice muffled in Caleb's shoulder, " As is Beauregard. . . . Yasha and I will give you both such a talking to when you return. " He hoped the humor would lighten the mood. " . . . We will save you. If anything happens, we will come. "
But there was a distant horror in Essek's eyes, knowing that he had no way of being certain. There were fates beyond the scope of their skill. But his determination would never waver. He'd search for a way to save Caleb for the rest of his life if that was what it took.

Caleb's fingers curled in gripping Essek's clothes, maybe even his back as he tried to hold the other closer to him. Caleb could not blame him for being scared. Caleb was scared. He was going to the source of many of his problems, he may have assisted in cutting off the hand, but their was still the heart, and the brain to contend with. "I am too, schatz." He squeezed even tighter, "But their is not other way, you are far too important to be put out of commission if things go sour."
ESSEK SAW THE LOGIC IN IT, though he didn’t wish to. He wanted to say anything, do anything in order to come with him. The thought of this being the last time in each other’s arms . . . Or what if Ludinus’ used his magic to further traumatize Caleb? What if this moment would haunt him for the rest of his life?
Essek looked down, fidgeting with the human’s lapels. “ I . . . Caleb, I’m scared. ” He leaned forward, hugging his partner.
Because ultimately, that was what all of his thoughts amounted to. This path was the best they could think of, so they didn’t have any other choice. Essek’s mind flashed back to the fight with Ikithon. He’d said the same thing then. Caleb, I’m scared. At the end of the day, he had all of this Shadowhand training, but he still couldn’t compartmentalize like Caleb.

He shook his head, he was resolute with this. He loved Essek, but he needed someone here, to speak when he couldn't. He knew this was dangerous, he knew how dangerous Ludinus was, he knew first hand, Trent was a prodigy of his of sorts, and Caleb was Trent's. He knew. It was why Beau had selected him, instead of Eadwulf. It was why they did things the way they were. He needed someone to not go that he trusted, that could do what he did. And that was Essek.
"Beauregard is helping me, Veth is in Nicodranas and the rest are at sea. I do not think this will affect them. But Veth has access to Yussa, and the others are far enough away." Yasha was different because she was in the city, and he was letting Beauregard deal with that, they were probably having a very similar conversation. He looked sad as he spoke, he clearly didn't want this, but he also was thinking what that rational part of his brain that shut down the emotional side from speaking. He would love Essek to be there. He would love that help but he could not risk. Essek did not deserve it.
"Things are not going to be easy here, and they will need your help here. We cannot all go to the front lines, then none of the heavy hitters will be left." Caleb was trying not to put all their eggs in one basket. Ludinus was old and powerful, but also very smart, he could not afford to fall to the traps he was certain Ludinus was setting.
ESSEK WAS CONSUMED WITH ANXIETY, his pulse racing, his head starting to throb. He knew how dangerous Ludinus was. He’d met with him multiple times, and the wizard had magic like no other. He couldn’t stand the thought of watching Caleb walk away, and then never seeing him again.
“ Caleb, please, ” he said, breathily. He rested his hands on Caleb’s chest near his collar bones. It was partially to comfort himself, and partly to plead. “ Could we not . . . leave word with the Nein? Tell them to start looking if they do not hear from us in a few days? ” Then he wouldn’t need to stay behind. But he worried Caleb would think they shouldn’t involve the others in this, that they had lives of their own.

He could play stupid, but that was not wise. Because he wasn't stupid, nor was Jesster. He looked down, "My worst nightmare," he told her, and frowned. But then he smiled, even if it was sad. "Its over now."

He cupped Essek's cheek with his hand and gave him a very tender kiss, but it was sad. He shook his head. "Not this time. I need you her." it wasn't that he did not think Essek was not capable. No. It wasn't even that he wanted Essek safe. It also was not that he didn't think Essek could help he had been invaluable this entire time. It was if something went wrong Caleb wanted to ensure that there was back up somewhere with someone he trusted implicitly. Not that he did not trust the rest of the Nein, but they were not involved like he Essek, and Beau were.
