Where should the Smash Bros series go next?
Tumblr media
Now that Super Smash Bros Ultimate is basically done, I've been thinking, what could be next for the series? Ultimate was definitely the biggest game in the franchise, and I don't think it would be a good idea to make the next game just add more characters and stages. That is, if there is a next game.
There is also Sakueai himself, would he want to make another Smash Brothers game after ultimate? If not, and Nintendo want a new game, then they'll probably just get someone else to develop it, which will cause a massive divide and controversy in the fanbase. People will be talking about how they missed the Sakurai era of Smash, and how this new era is awful.
Plus, if Sakurai was to make another Smash Bros game, then he'll likely change it up by a lot, and I don't assume many fans would really be on board with that. A change to the franchise like cutting down the character roster, will get less people excited. But at the same time, adding more new stuff will feel redundant.
So as for where I think the series should go next. I think it should go in the direction of an anime, or movie(but preferably anime). The reason being, from the reveal trailers it is clear that Nintendo is very capable of creating a Smash Bros animated series. Also, the Palutena reveal trailer started off in an anime artstyle, which convinces me even more that they are capable of doing it.
As for why I think this is the way to go, well after all of these years of playing smash, waiting patiently for the next reveal trailer to drop, this could be a nice little break and reward. This Smash Bros anime would be a huge love letter to the fans, seeing all of their favourite videogame characters, even the dlc ones they waited for, in an animated series interacting with one another. It'll be like subspace emissary, but entirely cutscenes.
As for how the structure of this anime, we'll they could do it in seasons. Each season representing each Smash Bros game. So season 1 will be based of the N64 game, with the roster there, and each season, more characters get introduced, like in the games.
As for the plot, well the Smash Bros universe has quite a lot of lore that hasn't been explored yet. Like the mystery of guys like Master Hand, Taboo, Galeem. This anime could really take a chance to explore that side of Smash which the games haven't really touched. Is every character really just a toy?
As for whether Sakurai should work on this or not, I'm not sure, probably, in a sense, this will also be a sort of love and thank you letter to him.
