online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted was sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.
and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.
there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.
i hope you're all okay out there. i hope the sun is shining on your face and you are breathing deeply. i miss you.

Tonight was the first night I never knew you.
The night I saw the things you never let me see behind those eyes,
The scared girl,
Running barefoot from her past into a future she did not know to shield her from a present she was terrified of,
Broken glass shredding tired feet and trembling legs breath ragged from torn up lungs trying to feel something but
you were numb
Or at least that's what you told yourself to escape the shadows in your mind, to try to let go the past but you cannot let go the past without accepting that it is no more.
for it is no more
no more but also everywhere you look i look there we find each other and we cannot move on
I cannot move on
but you can
and you did
and you hurt me used me in the process
and i let you because i didn't want u to hurt any more
I was your shield and I do not have to be that any more but I will still be there for you every time any time you need me because I cannot let go of this girl I never knew who took my world and made it bright and held me high like I held her -
high above the mountains which cast their dark shadows upon us
but i was not strong enough then and how can i be strong enough now when you who held me tight when I needed it are not there now when i need it most
because i need you
you held my life together and now you are gone i am shattered like glass
like every night when i did not give you what you needed because i was selfish for my time and you broke a little bit more
and you found a guy who showed you the love you needed and i did not see until it was too late
too late and i could only watch my life shatter because i was not there when you needed me most
and so i paid.
Tonight was the first night you didn't know me. The first night you saw me and saw a stranger there, someone once so familiar now so distant.
And you ached
Because that wasn't supposed to be how this story went and we both knew it
And so you ran, barefoot over broken glass, running from the present to the past, through a future you were scared to witness
But the shards you stepped on, left over from our shattered hearts burned in your feet and you knew why you left this place
And still you forged on, toes bleeding, heart shaking in its cage to reach me until I didn't see that you cherished this pain
But you told me
you did not care about the future, the shadows of the now, you wanted the past, the shield i was
and every word you dragged through your burning lips and scorched lungs hurt you more
and you felt real
but you also felt dead
tonight was the first night i never cared and the only night i ever cared and every night i didn't care every night you cared too much the first night you knew me the last night i didn't know you and every night in between
and i cared too much and not enough and it hurt that I could not be your shield because I was the weapon in your hand as you turned them on yourself
now i know
but it is too late
too late
to care

Humor: A mix of surprise and joy caused by obtaining unexpected information or insight
Gloating: A mixture of satisfaction and pride caused by the reassertion of one’s position or privilege over another
For years I’ve wondered why conservative political commentary fails SO BADLY at comedy. I mean, I recognize that I’m biased to appreciate humor that agrees with my existing worldview, that surely can’t account for all of it.
After all, humor should be one of those traits that is spread pretty evenly across the political spectrum, right? Like a talent for writing, public speaking, or playing a musical instrument, you’d think it would be relatively easy to find examples on both sides of the aisle, but that hasn’t been my observation.
But I recently realized that may be tied to the way I define humor, and what it takes to make me laugh. See, I believe that the majority of humor is derived from the mixture of joy and surprise that occurs when our brains make a new, unexpected connection.
Maybe someone helps us see the world in a different way, or articulates a concept that we’re aware of but have never put into words before. Maybe it comes from relating two ideas that had previously been totally unrelated, or finding that a word or phrase was more versatile than we’d thought before.
The bottom line is that it requires some amount of unexpected insight or information (no matter how simple or mundane it may be) to find a nugget of humor. And that often means that introspection and a flexible mindset are important ingredients for a comedian.
In short, a good comedian should always be on the lookout for truth and wisdom in unexpected places.
And in the past, I think this may have been possible across the political spectrum. But the more radicalized and extreme someone’s beliefs become, the more difficult humor becomes. Because that constant search for unexpected insight may just lead you to ideas that challenge your pre-existing worldview, and that can be dangerous when you’re entrenched in a radicalized group.
This isn’t a problem exclusive to Republicans and other conservatives, but it is evidence of how much more radicalized those groups have become in recent years. (Especially because I believe any Republican who is truly moderate and introspective would come to the inevitable conclusion that Trump’s presidency has been absurd.)
So if the cost of humor becomes too high, what can a radicalized individual turn to if they’re in need of a laugh? Gloating.
Gloating is often mistaken for humor because they’re both often expressed through laughter. But they’re definitely NOT the same. Gloating is like the ugly counterfeit of humor.
Gloating is a feeling of pride and satisfaction that occurs when you maintain the status quo in a way that elevates you and/or diminishes someone else. When you tear someone down to keep them in their place, or reassert your superiority that justifies your status in life.
Again, this is not exclusive to conservatism, and I’ve known countless radicalized liberals who replace the humor in their life with self-satisfied gloating. (And I actively work of making sure I don’t go down that path myself.) But again, it does seem particularly prevalent among the most famous conservatives in the current political environment.
(Side note: I think that gloating can sometimes give off a false glimmer of humor when it leads to the unexpected insight, “Hey, I can’t believe I got away with saying that, but it looks like the people around me approve after all!” This is one of the reasons that people often get so angry when you tell them their gloating isn’t actually funny. It both unmasks their gloating and undermines what it’s meant to accomplish.)
What is my point in all of this? I dunno. “Humor is better than gloating, so if you want to be funny don’t be a jerkwad,” maybe?
I think ultimately I just wanted to share something I had been thinking about, and see if it can help reframe the way we view quality humor as a tool to avoid idealogical extremism, instead of just something that silly, juvenile people do.
Maybe we can learn something if we all take humor a little more seriously.

This was inspired by two things:
1- I’m a bisexual woman dating a cis straight man. That doesn’t make me straight, and that doesn’t make my relationship a straight one. That doesn’t mean I belong less in the LGBT+ community than a gay person.
2- The fourth example was not a joke. I’m in a fandom where two genderless entities with a temporary human shape are paired together. I’ve seen artists get hate because they drew them “looking straight”. The characters are still non-binary, still in love, STILL NOT STRAIGHT. Do not allow this toxic rhetoric in your fandom. Protect artists.
**Note– Forgot I meant to add aro and ace in there, sorry, but this TOTALLY INCLUDES ARO AND ACE PEOPLE.
THERE IS NO HIERARCHY OF WHAT IS MORE ACCEPTABLE IN THE LGBT+ COMMUNITY.

I’ve been having fun with a Sultai Gaea’s Blessing deck. Yoou play two or 3 Unmoored Ego and the rest is removal and card draw, plus 3 Gaea’s Blessing. I don’t know if you would enjoy it (I’m a die-hard control mage) but if you want to see the soul leaving your opponent’s eyes this is the deck for you.
gimme some fun/weird standard decks
I’ve played all the Bant Scapeshift I can and lately Yarok Brawl has me enjoying myself (yeah, I want Brawl on Arena so bad that I’m playing my Brawl deck despite it not being supported) but I need to mix it up
I tried a combo deck with the Arcbow but didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected.
What’s good, Tumblr?

How to confess to your crush
Wake up after a good night of sleep. Look at the ceiling of your dark room and be grateful for what you have.
Take your time to properly wake up. Your mind is still clouded and sudden movements can irritate it. You need to be fully conscious today.
Pick out clothing you like. A shirt you love and a pair of trousers you feel comfortable in or a dress or skirt if you want to. Wear your favorite shoes and wash your face.
It is optional to listen to music while making your way to that significant someone, but if you prefer not to, it’s fine.
If you feel your heart starting to beat fast, stand still and close your eyes. Your body will understand and try to relax. Thank it for that.
Look into the sky. Wonder about the many things mother nature has achieved. You will be amazed. Let that feeling fulfill you.
As you get closer to your destination, you will start to get uneasy. Don’t worry, it is natural and there is no need to worry.
If you made it up until this point with ease, congratulations.
When the person comes into view, remind yourself why you’ve grown to like them. If you swoon, do so. It’s cute.
Stop a few steps away from them. Call out their name. How you do it depends on you. Let your feelings seep through your words.
When they turn around to look at you, catch their gaze. Admire their beautiful eyes and tell them you think they’re pretty if you want to. They will be flattered.
Start your meaningful sentence. They will be aware of your words, watching you curiously.
“I like you. A lot”.
Their cheeks will turn rosy. You will find it to be the most adorable thing this earth has to offer.
You will feel your heartbeat in your throat. Don’t let the sick feeling fool you. Good things are about to come.
They will tell you they like you too. Wait, they like you too?
Excitement. That’s what your mind will sense. The smile on your face will be unstoppable. Don’t try to suppress it.
You will ask them to repeat themselves, just to be sure. They will say the same as before.
Without saying anything else, your body will want to hug the other. You will give in to that urge without hesitation.
Don’t worry if the corners of your mouth hurt from smiling. The pain will be worth it.

Help Odric Move
So here’s the short version of it:
-starting next week, I’ll be moving into an apartment with @istux
-I have enough money to pay this past month’s rent and get myself some food
-what I do not have enough money for is the U-Haul that I plan to rent for a day, and the potential night that I may take off of work to make this move happen (I have not completed my first 90 days of my new job and therefore do not have any PTO that I can use)
I’m not hurting too badly for money, but it’s enough to where I could use some help.
If you’re able to donate, you can find my PayPal ✨here✨.
If not, a reblog is always appreciated!
And thank you to those who took the time to read this!

BIG DISCLAIMER: i was 9 when 9/11 happened, so this might be more about my own crystalizing tastes than anything else. i think it’s a pretty darn good theory tho and other people have validated it.
BIGGER DISCLAIMER: i am not saying that country music prior to 9/11 was free from nationalist, racist, misogynist undertones - i just think that these themes became more the norm!
MY HOT TAKE:
with very few exceptions, including goodbye earl, before he cheats, and daddy Iessons (side note - all women!) 9/11 ruined country music. around 2014 onward we’ve got margo price, sturgill simpson, jason isbell etc., who are making country music great again (wink), but those folks are mostly considered “alternative” country. the mainstream country music for well over a decade now is a glut of trash performative patriotic / working-class-but-not-really lab-crafted budweiser-sponsored nonsense that has managed to sound rebellious (or has convinced its fans that it sounds rebellious) without ever actually questioning any power structure. so much so that artists who ACTUALLY criticized the government were literally blacklisted for nearly a decade (the dixie chicks)
pre-9/11 country music, though not perfect or ideologically pure by any stretch, did not have the raging american flag painted truck boner that comes to mind for a lot of people who say “i like everything except rap and country”
SPECIFICALLY, toby keith’s “courtesy of the red, white, and blue (the angry american)” (2002) literally destroyed country music. it was a direct answer to the 9/11 attacks and war song in support of the invasion of afghanistan. the lyrics read like a disjointed feverish email chain letter forwarded from your great uncle sprinkled with glittering american flag gifs and heavily saturated pictures of bald eagles. the entire song is lifted from an estimated 248 peeling bumper stickers collected from rusted trucks on cinder blocks in overgrown yards, cut up and arranged to fit a catchy, formulaic tune that is almost certainly the background music playing in george w. bush’s head at all times.
“we’ll put a boot in your ass, it’s the american way and uncle sam put your name at the top of his list and the statue of liberty started shakin’ her fist and the eagle will fly, and it’s gonna be hell, when you hear mother freedom start a'ringin’ her bell”
country music and the new country musicians that toby keith paved the way for became so pro establishment and so unquestioningly nationalistic that, again, the dixie chicks who went against this grain were blacklisted by the industry and received death threats from country music fans. hell, there are folks who STILL froth at the mouth at the mere mention of the dixie chicks.
9/11 killed outlaw country - how can you sing the praises of law breakers when your main circuit consists of singing to troops? there are some great classic country songs critiquing the police state - especially from johnny cash and merle haggard - now country music artists hold fundraisers for FOPs. new country music is basically in-law country music.
you don’t have to write a pro-bush patriotic anthem to be part of this post-9/11 ruination. playing meaningless songs about living in the heart of (read: white) america, eschewing the city (read: not white), and cracking open a cold one with the boys for “authentic” country music is also important to the war effort.
there’s a progression of themes here:
post 9/11 top tier: war anthem, vocally patriotic, directly used as pro war propaganda; which paved the way for: “things used to be so much better” thinly veiled racist laments, good for campaign ads; which paved the way for meaningless party anthems - attempts to make things “like they used to be” and craft a reality that neither the artist nor listener likely ever experience.
that brings us to what most people think of today when they say they hate country music: the country party anthem - “tiny hot gal in tight jean shorts who can drink beer like the guys, she doesn’t like beyoncé Like Other Girls, oh she’s so into me and my truck, i’m gonna take her fishing after i finish sowing my corn - sung by a guy who’s never touched a tractor” - has overtaken the tragic, done me wrong, despairing country ballads of tammy wynette, george jones, and even up into pre-9/11 contemporaries like reba mcentire and george strait. you didn’t necessarily have to be country to relate to their pain. now you have to perform suburban redneckness to enjoy luke bryan.
when was the last time you heard a sad country song?
after 9/11, cowboys (whether or not they had ever been near a cow) weren’t allowed to be sad anymore (no more done me wrong country), and they certainly weren’t allowed to question authority (no more outlaw country). partying hardy became the most important American Thing and if you don’t sing about that, our Enemies Will Win.
so - understanding that country music has always had bad stuff, and that like any genre it suffers from commercialization, 9/11 DESTROYED COUNTRY MUSIC. and toby keith gleefully helped destroy it.
for some further evidence of the decline of country music, please listen to the dixie chicks’ “long time gone” which is an indictment of the industry (i believe it was written before 9/11 but my point still stands - the genre was on the decline and 9/11 was the major cultural event that hastened the decline).
maybe i am a curmudgeon - almost every generation of country music has had its own “country music is not what it used to be” anthem, but i really think something distinct happened with 9/11.
