really ultimately, as great as a film monkey man was, there is a certain....irreverance or detachment i have with ramayana as a story and mythology, i know it well enough to have appreciated the imagery and motifs in the film and how its woven in but from a political perspective, im like eh, not the most interesting take on the ramayaana i have seen in film

#might ramble on later#not as censored as i thought it was going to be#probably the most left mainstream western south asian diasporic content ive engaged with in recent years#like it endorses violence as a response to oppression and even critiqued and highlights the elevation of ahimsa#but still engages the ramayana in a surface level and that it critiques caste but not how caste shows up in the ramayana#like i doubt dev patel and the people he is surrounded by are going to have read riddles in hinduism or know about how the south#engaged with the ramayana and the context of dravidian critiques and retellings of the text

Look the thing about Marry My Dead Body is that it is very much bury-your-gays in that the gay comes pre-buried before the movie opens. But. Humour me a moment. It is also, arguably, a story about the birth of a queer. It's about a guy who goes around calling gay men whatever the Taiwanese equivalent of pansy is that I do NOT want to know about and ends it as the grieving but heart-gladdened widower of a man he loves more than life. You see what I'm getting at here? I'm not entirely serious because I'm not sure the movie is entirely serious but like. It's about the possibility of it. Some queer people are born this way and some are reborn this way.
