SUPERCUT . . ➯ CEDRIC DIGGORY

isha's notes: i am so sorry <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in my head, i play a supercut of us; all the magic we gave off, all the love we had and lost.
feeling the blades of grass tickle the bottom of her feet the young girl opened her eyes, the great expanse of the blue, cloudless sky almost blinding her with its brightness. she can feel the warmth of the sun gently caressing her face, drying her tears.
“sickle for your thoughts?”
a beaming boy sat beside her holding a bronze coin between his fingers, “that’s a knut.”
“i only have a knut, but sickle flows better with the phrase,” he replied, laying on the grass beside her. “i’m cedric, by the way.”
“y/n,” cedric slipped the knut inside her hand, “nice to meet you, cedric.”
his smile only got bigger, “now, pay what you owe me.”
“my cat, miso, died this morning,” y/n sighed at the thought of her late pet as she slowly wove her fingers through the green grass beside her.
“oh,” cedric said solemnly.
y/n turned to offer him a soft smile, “she was just a baby kitty when we found her under our car! but the muggle doctor said miso wasn’t feeling all that well - which i can’t really believe because i only give her the best kibbles! but oh, they said she still has to go.”
“i’m sorry, y/n,” the boy said. “is there any way i can make you feel better?”
“listening is enough,” she replied, patting the back of his hand.
in your car the radio up, we keep trying to talk about us.
“cedric, i swear to god, if we die tonight, i will hunt you down in the afterlife and shove a chainsaw up your arse,” y/n shouted at the passenger seat, a genuine look of panic in her eyes. cedric merely guffawed as he started the engine of his father’s car.
“then wear your seatbelt, l/n!” he replied, an annoying smirk on his face. y/n lightly hit the side of his head as she clicked her tongue before fiddling with the seatbelt.
cedric scoffed, “don’t tell me you don’t know how to fasten a seatbelt!” he exclaimed as he reached over to her side, clicking it together.
“muggle contraptions are so complicated! they make everything unnecessarily complex,” she defended with a huff, laying flat on the cushioned seat.
“you’re gonna thank that strange muggle contraption later,” cedric foreshadowed as he popped a tape into the car stereo. “you ready?”
the warped guitar sound of a zeppelin track pulsated through the speakers as the two teenagers hit the mostly empty 1AM road with no clear destination in mind. y/n set aside her doubts concerning cedric’s driving skills (or lack thereof) and decided to join in his fun, singing and dancing along.
as the album culminated, cedric parked at the side of the highway overlooking the sea. it was a bit past 1:30 AM when the two friends decided to hop on the concrete barrier and sit side by side.
“we’re going to be in sixth year when we come back in september,” y/n started, picking on the chipping yellow paint of the barrier. “crazy, isn’t it?”
“yeah,” cedric nodded as he looked over at the beach. “it seems like yesterday when we met at the field. we were only six!”
y/n laughed as she recalled the serendipitous day. it was bizarre how that seemingly sad day lead her to meet cedric diggory, who always made her life a tad bit brighter. she fixed her attention on the waves lapping at the shore, ascending and receding.
“a black jack that’s been in my jacket’s pocket for too long for your thoughts?” cedric said, a piece of candy resting in the middle of his palm. y/n took it, grimacing at the poor state the sweet was in.
“ew, ced. the wrapper is literally going to fall apart,” y/n giggled as she placed the candy on the space between them. “i’m thinking about how scary growing up is.”
cedric frowned at her response. “is it for you? i’ve always been excited,” he replied, unwrapping the black jack and placing it in his mouth.
“if you keep eating bad candy you won’t last long,” y/n laughed as her best friend’s face contorted into a disgusted expression before spitting out the confectionery.
“oh, that was gnarly,” he laughed along. “it tastes like shit.”
“how do you know what shit tastes like?” y/n joked, her eyebrows furrowed together in feigned confusion.
“sod off l/n,” cedric poked the side of her wait causing her to jump from her seat. “if any of us knows, it’s you because so much of it is coming out of your mouth.”
the sound of the crashing waves occupied the space as their laughter died down.
“i see growing up as an opportunity to try and experience new things,” cedric started, looking over at his best friend. “like, you know, eating expired taffy, or driving my father’s car through muggle london while blasting zeppelin and probably going over the speed limit.”
y/n nodded as she watched him speak with admiration.
“i can already picture it: me, promoted to head auror, and you, head-in-charge at st. mungo’s, sharing drinks in the three broomsticks competing about who’s the more accomplished one,” cedric said, eliciting a scoff from the girl. “being afraid can be good. it means you care. but if you let it get to you, you might miss out on a lot of things.”
in my head, i do everything right. when you call, i forgive and not fight.
“y/n, are you seriously going to crucify me over this?” cedric asked, his voice ever so soft and never rising in anger. “please stop ignoring me.”
“yes! yes, i will,” y/n, on the other hand, shouted, her voice reverberating in the empty second floor corridor. “because i’ve had enough! imagine, standing foolishly in the rain in the middle of hogsmeade waiting for someone who’ll never come.”
cedric sighed as he walked closer to her. he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, feeling the rapid rising and falling of her chest from all the screaming and crying, “i’m sorry, i really am, y/n. you know i have so many things on my plate right now. schoolworks, the tournament -”
“oh, fuck that stupid tournament,” she spat in anger as she yanked his hand off her shoulder. y/n’s mind was going haywire from all the frustration that was building up in her for the past months since the new term started.
cedric saw right through her, he always did. when he was chosen as the hogwarts champion, y/n was the most supportive of him and even organized a party in his honor. lately, with the pressure of the second task coming up and the extra responsibilities brought about by being in sixth year, it was getting a bit harder for him to balance his time between things and people important to him.
“i’m sorry,” cedric apologized again. “i’ll make it up to you, okay? i promise. i’ll sort my schedule out and we can hang out.” she wiped the tears from her eyes, feeling the tinge of guilt in her heart growing. slowly, she turned to face him.
cedric has seen his best friend cry a hundred times but nothing felt more heartbreaking than knowing it was because of him. he slowly wrapped his arms around her, rubbing her shoulders up and down as she repeatedly whispered apologies into his chest.
“this whole thing… it’s eating up all your time and i feel like i’m losing my best friend to the tournament,” y/n confessed. “it’s selfish, i know and i’m sorry. this is what you want and i should be supporting you.”
cedric hummed. “it’s okay, y/n. just don’t ignore me like that again, please?” she nodded in response. “i don’t think i’ll be able to finish this thing without you by my side.”
they separated from their embrace, wiping tears from their cheeks. “i won’t, i promise.”
because ours are the moments i play in the dark. we were wild and fluorescent, come home to my heart.
y/n pulled the large blanket closer together, shivering slightly from the cold breeze brought by the rain. she looked up at the grey, gloomy sky, the clouds hanging so low it’s like she can reach them if she stretched her arm as far up as she could.
thunder boomed from somewhere in the distance.
it has been a month since the maze, since she was last genuinely happy, since cedric emerged, limp and lifeless with a sobbing potter. the past month felt like a blur to her. she can’t seem to remember anything that happened - who the letters expressing condolences were from, who sent the now wilting sunflowers in her vase, who left the still warm oatmeal cookies on her bedside table. the only thing she knew was the feeling of perpetual grief and anger and confusion contained in heart and felt by her bones.
every morning, between opening her eyes and fully, consciously waking up, she basks in the momentary feeling of hope that her best friend will magically burst through her bedroom door sporting his neatly combed hair and bright smile like he’s back from a tedious quidditch training session. that split second of hope taken from her as quickly as it came, as realization dawns and she remembers that this world will never be the same.
but when i reach for you, there's just a supercut.

“Y/N, WOULD YOU look at that? we’ve got new neighbours moving in next door!” your mother beckoned you towards the window in the front room.
you climbed up on the sofa to peer out the glass. you saw a large truck parked in front of your drive. there was a middle aged man who came out of the driver’s side of the truck.
another middle-aged woman hopped out the passenger side of the truck, a small boy, around your age, attached to her hip.

Another tedious social gathering had compelled the majority of the ton to gather together again, like spiders flocking to a single web to discuss their latest plans of entrapping copious amounts of defenceless flies, and Lady Whistledown, the web itself. The only sense of relief found in these frightful events, was when a certain someone, the object of your affections, finally made her appearance.
She may not have been the diamond this season, but diamonds often lose their charm, for they are so attainable these days. No, Eloise Bridgerton was an emerald, a ruby, safely tucked away in a mountainside where you were the sole observer of her beauty, her shimmer in the sunlight, and sparkle in the moonlight. And each day, you wore her close to your heart, closer than any jewel.
You were not a sought after rarity, and could leave a night’s gathering largely unscathed, but rather lacking in fulfilling conversation, thus, often leaving dissatisfied still. At present, you idly watched the swarm of couples dance merrily in the centre of the room, while you, having not been pleasing enough to the eye of any gentlemen, were left without a dance partner as per usual. There happened to be a certain savvy in this, and you took pleasure in being one of the few who could really find amusement in it, for it was not the attention of any gentlemen you wished to attract.
Eloise entered your line of vision, dressed in a pale green, muslin dress with her curled hair pulled back into a loose bun, and her fringe flowing free. As always, she was utterly breathtaking, and her fine clothes and jewels simply exaggerated what natural beauty was already bestowed upon her from the Heavens. She caught your eye playfully, mischievously, and your heart leapt at such a subtle yet agonisingly obvious, intimate expression. Her lips were plump, no doubt from chewing them—a nervous habit she had adopted years prior in her infancy—but inviting nevertheless.
“Lady Y/N, you look exquisite tonight,” said a masculine voice from beside you, tearing your focus from Eloise, vexed by this interruption.
“Thank you, Lord Grayson,” you replied curtly, a small and feigned smile stretching over your lips.
“Would you care to dance? I have not seen you stand up yet,” he asked you, his manners lacking in his latter statement.
“I am honoured, but I am afraid I must decline your kind offer,” you said through gritted teeth, attempting to politely bow and take your leave.
“I am the only man who has offered you his hand tonight, it would be an insult for you to decline,” he protested, a pout upon his face like a little boy who had been refused ice cream before his dinner.
“I do not accept the hands of impertinent men who sleight women and think their hand the most honourable offer a woman can receive,” you spat, bowed, and left without a second glance.
Eloise has been watching the interaction from afar, examining your features, your body language, and muted expressions, realising it was a less than pleasant exchange. With this knowledge, she followed you across the dance floor, though not too closely as to attract unwanted attention, and let you guide her into the gardens where the two of you could relish in the crisp, evening air.
“Odious man!” You cursed under your breath, but Eloise was now close enough to hear your frustrations.
“Forget him,” she said softly, stepping closer, entering a proximity that, if you were found, would be considered compromising for two women, “He is nothing.”
Her deliberate softness allowed you to relinquish any vexations you held too tightly, leaving a genuine smile to grace your lips as you stared deeper into Eloise’s sapphire eyes. Her gloved fingers reached through empty air, all notions of propriety, and unspoken scrutiny, to meet yours, and delicately run her fingers along your wrist in a silent act of consolation. She longed and yearned, as you did, to act on her impulses, her desires and affections, but could not do so when so close to the open ballroom doors.
Her hand seized yours in an instant, pulling you down the stone steps lined with roses and tulips, freshly cut for her majesty, and through the newly trimmed hedge maze, deeper into the dimly lit gardens. What a scandal it would cause if you were to be caught, not just a scandal but mutually assured ruin. And yet, this only seemed to fuel the passion you harboured for one another, burning in your hearts every second you were torn away from each other to entertain an eligible gentlemen, every dance in which you were not together, every touch of which you did not share.
“No one will look for us here,” she whispered, her warm breath tickling the hairs on your neck.
“I wish I could dance with you in that room, and show everyone that my attention is solely occupied by you,” you said, playing with the ribbon that wrapped around her waist and fell into her dress.
“Perhaps we could dance here instead, with the stars and fireflies,” she giggled quietly, daring to rest a hand upon your waist.
The feeling was utterly sublime, her fingertips pressing into the dress over your waist, allowing a mere taste of what it might feel like skin to skin. From the very moment you beheld her, you were completely enthralled with the women who treasured character and state of mind over the expenses paid on dresses and jewels used to make the wearer the more desirable of the litter.
From so very far away, you could not hear the music playing in the ballroom, and instead danced slightly out of rhythm with one another, but knowing this time you spent together was more intimate than most who were engaged to be married. You seldom found time for such moments alone, but treasured any period of time, no matter the length, in which the minutes were yours and yours alone.
“I feel so very lost without you,” Eloise spoke suddenly, a whimper in her voice.
“I am right here beside you, always,” you assured her, pulling her in closer and resting your forehead on hers, breathing in her fragrant perfume.
“I feel as if I am missing you in preparation for when we are both inevitably married to the highest bidder.”
“Do not think about that. Life is not made up of guarantees, Eloise, please do not live as though it is. Let us enjoy this morsel of time we’ve been given here, tonight.”
“You are right,” she agreed, lifting her forehead away and leaning her lips in closer, begging a question she dare not ask out loud, for fear the wind might carry the words to someone with keen ears and loose lips.
But you answered her unspoken question, capturing your lips with hers in a soft, gentle embrace that left your breath trembling as you pulled away from her.
“You are the air I breathe,” Eloise hummed, echoing her parents’ love and knowing that if it was anything like theirs, then it could not be so wrong.

I have thoughts. Thoughts I would like to share… with you. What I am failing to say is that often, when I read something new or interesting or provoking, it is you who crosses my mind. It is you I would like to speak with about those thoughts. And so I am wondering if you might also have thoughts of me when you… think.

It's telling how much sympathy Phillip gets for a sec of a scene and Marina gets nothing close to it, how can you rationalize Penelope's situation and not hers? How can you say the world is unfair to P so her actions are ok but that same reason can't be applied to M?! I would respect more if they would just come out with "Yeah my fave and I don't care what they do" than this shallow defense not when if weren't C, P wouldn't do that, not when she had options to tell C the truth without ruining M
It's telling how little sympathy there is for Marina's character. They're basically like "well if she didn't want to end up pregnant maybe she should've kept her legs closed" which sounds like an echo from the 1950s tbh
Marina's story is heartbreaking because it reflects the fate of so many anonymous women in history, and this misogynistic view reflects society's view of these women too. I mean, I know in Marina's case the father of her child was her sweetheart from back home who loved her and had every intention of marrying her (which thank god, because she deserves at least that little bit of happiness) but just take a moment to think how easy it would be for a girl at her time to be seduced and abandoned by some bastard. We saw last season just how much women were kept in the dark about sexual intercourse, how difficult would it be for a man to sell a girl some tale of love and marriage and take her virginity before she even knows what the hell is going on? And she'd soon end up being an outcast if there was a pregnancy, shamed and scorned by everyone.
And if, like in Marina's case, a man willing to marry her turned up that's exactly how people would react: you were lucky enough to have someone take you in in the first place, you're lucky enough this man isn't a wifebeater or an alcoholic, just shut up and count your blessings.
And unfortunately that's what Marina has internalised too. We supposedly see her doing alright in s02 but what I saw was a woman who was disillusioned and weary and given up in any chance of true happiness, so she's just focused on being practical and making the most out of what she's got and loving her children.
And from any other show I'd expect that because women needed to be practical in order to survive unfortunately. But from what is supposed to be a series about romance, where everyone gets their HEA? It stings that this woman's story has been one of heartbreak and ultimately settling for a marriage that provides her with respectability and gives her children a future, but not happiness.
