Rating: SFW
Pairing: Zoethian
Summary: “I need to concentrate, and I can’t do that while you’re here,” she said. “I’ll be fine.” And she would be, really. Even if her hands were trembling so badly she had to hide them behind her back, and her goggles were down so he couldn’t see the panic in her eyes.
Note: I stumbled across this piece in the depths of my writing folder this evening while procrastinating from finals. I wrote it over six months ago, but I'm still rather fond of it so I figured I might as well share it.
Her waist was roped, ‘Don’t dare let go!’,
her voice resounded from below
“I’ve got this,” she told him, her hands on her hips and her chin jutted confidently in the air. “Go and run some errands or something; this’ll be all fixed by the time you get back. Promise.”
He gave her his patented ender-stare, and she gave him her best grin, hoping that just this once she’d be able to fool him.
“Are you sure you want me to leave?” He asked, and oh, it was not fair for him to give her that face. His eyes were soft, and she knew that if his mask were down his mouth would be twisted into an endearing half-frown as he tried and failed to hide his concern.
“I need to concentrate, and I can’t do that while you’re here,” she said. “I’ll be fine.” And she would be, really. Even if her hands were trembling so badly she had to hide them behind her back, and her goggles were down so he couldn’t see the panic in her eyes. She needed to be fine. Because while she wanted more than anything for him to stay with her, the thought of blowing Rythian to pieces because she couldn’t do something as simple as disarm a bomb was infinitely more terrifying to her than sending him away.
“Zoey—”
“C’mon, Rythian,” she cut him off, and she hated using this card with him, but: “Don’t you trust me?”
He went rigid. “Of course I do.”
“Then let me do this, okay?”
“Fair enough,” he conceded, and instead of triumph at her victory, she felt only a gnawing dread deep in the pit of her stomach. “But be careful, okay?”
“I will, don’t worry.” But she knew that he would and he should because she really had no idea that if what she was planning to do would work. “See you in a bit!”
He gave her one last long look before he disappeared up the stairs, and Zoey tried very hard not to think that this was most likely the last time she would ever see him as she turned to look at the bomb ticking away underneath it’s protective glass shell.
