I like to imagine Myrrine on Naxos trying to hold onto control and looking at the possibility of seeking outside help and she manages to hear about “the Eagle Bearer” but managing to miss all of the information that would have made her realize it’s Kassandra
Like someone suggests hiring this “Eagle Bearer” mercenary they heard about because she managed to really turn things around in Megaris and a few other places so Myrrine is like “oh great tell me what you know about this Eagle Bearer person”
and so they start looking into her and rumors and yeah she turned things around a few places but also gets caught creeping around Leader’s Houses a lot. Apparently she claims to be a god. Apparently she claims to be Spartan royalty and hates Athenians. Apparently she loves hanging out at Athenian Symposiums and hates Spartans and just rams into their ships all the time for no reason. Apparently she’s a psychopath that just likes sneaking up on people and kicking them off cliffs. One time she killed the leader of city, only to side with the leader’s side in the war after weakening their resources to nothing. And then did it again immediately after. In the same region. Apparently she’s a pirate who crews her ship with her lesbian lovers and they might be cult.
And like Myrrine manages to just hear all the batshit stuff Kassandra is doing and a lot of stuff she definitely isn’t actually doing but people claim she is but never hears her actual name or any details that would make it click that this is her daughter and she’s just like “we are absolutely not hiring this woman”
something something brasidas telling kassandra the displaced can always find their way home something something brasidas helping kassandra regain her home in sparta something kassandra believing home isn't a place but people...
“i hate it here” is peak escapism and hearing her talk about how she lives in a garden no one else has access to in her mind (unlike the rest of her life) for most of the year is sooooo. made up scenarios and imagining living in the 1800s… it’s giving the lakes except she’s alone and she can’t actually leave. so much of the album is about feeling stuck and this one is about feeling stuck in herself.
im sure lots of people will listen to TTPD and discount it because she talks about matty in it (and ofc people have their valid issues with him, but im not gonna go into that), but the whole lead up to the album has been “we’re investigating,” and imo a lot of us took that as her saying “we’re investigating why my relationship ended” whereas the album is actually about “we’re investigating this caricature of a girl who went through something life-changing, and she has apparently gone crazy” and she’s basically done a public autopsy of herself; something that the media/fans/public have done since the beginning, but this time around she was like “i’ll do it to myself.”
hence, the album aesthetic feels so sterile too imo. she’s trying to distance herself from the subject but!!!!!! she is the subject. and in conclusion, i think what she’s really putting down is “the summary of the investigation of this girl is that she went insane because of what happened to her, but it’s hopefully gonna be okay”
sidenote: i think what we need to take away from the album is to… let her live…
