Merry Widow
Tumblr media
Era: 1950’s
Introduced by: Warner’s (1952)
Design Purpose: Cinch waist, Support bust, Smoothen out torso and hips, Hold up hosiery
A Merry Widow is a supportive foundation garment that enhances a wasp-waist silhouette that many women tried to achieve for decades even prior to the 1950’s. This garment can be referred to as a basque in the UK. Since it is typically strapless, it is best to be worn under a strapless dress or an off the shoulder garment. It starts at the chest and ends at the hips. It is fastened in the back with hooks and eyes and has boning, thus aiding in underbust support. Most have suspenders to attach stockings to. Warner’s was inspired to create their Merry Widow’s in response to the 1952 film The Merry Widow starring Lana Turner. Turner can be seen in the movie wearing long-line corsets. When speaking about this garment, Turner has once said, “I’m telling you, the merry widow was designed by a man. A woman would never do that to another woman.”

Carole Lombard’s tragic death always makes me wonder if her being onboard the plane was a contributing factor in the crash. I know that the flight was supposed to have landed and taken off from a different airport and then the flight crew failed to change their flight plan after rerouting to Las Vegas. However, I can’t help but wonder if the pilots of that plane were perhaps a little distracted by having this beauty on board. What a tragic ending to this beautiful woman’s life.
