Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Herbal Medicine
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of practices based on over 3,500 years of Chinese medical practice that focuses on the health and wellbeing of an individual. Several practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) include but are not limited to acupuncture, cupping, herbs, meditation, and tai-chi. Unlike Western medicine where the focus is mainly on treating or curing a certain illness or disease, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses on one’s entire wellbeing through the balance of yin and yang and the natural flow of qi. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) seeks to find a balance of opposing energies and the body’s vital energy. The belief is that the imbalance or blockage of qi flow affects a person’s health and any disturbance in one’s health is due to one’s “external or environmental factors, emotions, and lifestyle habits, such as poor nutrition” and sleep hygiene (Wang, 2016). The examination of the tongue and pulse are amongst the principle diagnostic methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). With just the examination of the tongue and pulse in addition to questions asked regarding a patient’s condition, a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician is able to put together a list of ingredients of herbs, raw goods, or powders to give the patient as medication. Such medicine is derived from several elements ranging from plant, animal, human, and mineral products. During examination, the physician may also use the traditional categorization called the Four Natures which consist of hot, warm, cool, and cold. Depending on what the physician may classify as a heat or cold disease, its opposite cool or cold herbs and hot or warm herbs will be used to in a way, counteract and create a balance. In Western medicine, the administration of pills such as antibiotics or vitamins are most common when treating certain illness or deficiencies. When it comes to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the use of natural herbs, elements, and powders form a concoction that is then brewed to a, most of the time, bitter drink.             When it comes to having the ability to afford certain care, not everyone has health insurance that helps cover the cost of medication. Such medication prescribed by physicians can be used to treat or aide in the recovery of certain illness. Due to various reasons, not every individual has the capability to access such medication. This may limit an individual’s chance to a cure or something that may help with one’s symptoms. For Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), anyone has the ability to purchase the necessary herbs and raw materials needed to brew up the desired medicine. A store that provides common herbs to form a concoction specific to a certain medicine is not rare and can sometimes be easy to locate. In terms of availability to a larger population, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) helps to cure or ease symptoms and illnesses and is also a more holistic approach to those who may seek it.  Ratini, M. Guided Imagery
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here
Did you know that your imagination can be used as a tool to improve your overall health and well-being? Guided imagery sessions can help do just that. It is a mind-body connection technique that uses both your senses and mental images to make you feel as if you are actually there (Guided Therapeutic Imagery, n.d.).
“For example, if we imagine slowly sucking on a lemon slice with great detail – the sour, tart taste and the soft, juicy texture – we will soon begin to salivate” (Smith, 2017). Another example, the therapists would use verbal prompts to encourage participants to take notice in visualizing the senses of the scene such as the sound, texture and smell. This can also cause the participant to have more control of their breathing while their muscles relax to be in a calm state (Guided Therapeutic Imagery, n.d.).
The goal of this is to improve a person’s health both physically and mentally. These sessions can be done with a group led by a trained practitioner or it can be done at the comfort of your own home using audio recordings.
Research has shown that with just 10 minutes of the session it can help improve your immune system, foster weight loss, fight depression, fatigue, reduce anxiety, and lower blood pressure and glucose levels (Urban, 2019). According to Duke Integrative Medicine (2017), research has also shown that these sessions improves hospital recovery time, reduce pain and insomnia, and improve self-confidence and self-control.
At the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, sessions are offered by appointment and free audio recordings are offered by advanced practitioners and behavioral health specialists. These audio recordings offered include accessing inner intuition and wisdom, autogenic training, breathing deeply for relaxation and stress relief, comfort in the face of grief and loss, easing pain, preparing for surgery or something procedural, and more.
These practice sessions are mostly considered to be safe however, some studies have shown that it can lead to producing false memories. You should let your physician know if you're doing alternative therapy or combining it with your medical treatment (Guided Therapeutic Imagery, n.d.). Guided Imagery. (n.d.). Apple Cider Vinegar
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here  What is apple cider vinegar? Well, apple cider vinegar mostly consists of apple juice but with the addition of yeast. The fermentation of the yeast turns the sugar in the juice into alcohol. This is why vinegar has such a strong smell and a sour taste! (WebMD, 2019). For a long history, apple cider vinegar has been used to treat medical conditions or sickness such as sore throats and varicose veins. Vinegar has been used as a remedy for centuries dating back to the ancient Greeks. The ancient Greeks would treat wounds with it. In the recent years, some researchers have been taking a deeper look into the possible benefits of apple cider vinegar (WebMD, 2019).
Apple cider vinegar is known to kill pathogens including bacteria. This is why vinegar itself is used in foods! It is used as a food preservative that inhibits bacteria such as e. coli from growing in food, causing spoilage. Therefore, vinegar has been used for cleaning and disinfecting wounds or other infections (Gunnars, 2018).
Are you struggling with high blood sugar levels? Well, you may want to consider using apple cider vinegar. The application of vinegar in patients with type 2 diabetes has shown numerous benefits for lowering blood sugar and insulin levels. Studies have shown that 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bedtime can reduce blood sugar in the morning by 4%! Having vinegar with meals improves insulin sensitivity and reduces blood sugar levels (Gunnars, 2018).
Not only will you decrease blood sugar levels, but studies have shown that it can help you lose weight and reduce belly fat! Human studies have shown that vinegar increases the feeling of satisfaction and fullness which results in consumption of fewer calories. But of course, you can’t rely solely on vinegar to do its work! Diet and lifestyle play a part in order to see effective results (Gunnars, 2018).
From personal experience, apple cider has helped my dog Kiba as well! He had yeast infection on his paws and I had to let his paws bathe in apple cider for a few minutes. The apple cider has helped cure the yeast infection for my dog.
Given all of these wonderful benefits, why not try apple cider vinegar yourself? Don’t drink too much in one sitting, it may cause nausea and other injuries such as burns to the digestive tract (Wong, 2019).

Elderberry
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here
Did you get your flu shot? If you didn’t, you should. In the meantime, why don’t you go buy some elderberry to prevent exposure to influenza?
Elderberry comes from a native tree in Europe and North America. Elder, also known as Sambucus nigra has held importance in traditional and folk medicine for its assistance in various health issues but most importantly, colds and the flu.
“Elderberries-are small, antioxidant rich fruits that are commonly consumed as a jam or wine. Elderberry extract is also available commercially in tablet or syrup form” (The Australian Homeopathic Association, 2019).
A recent study by a group of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering researchers from the University of Sydney identified how ripe elderberries help with influenza. They performed “an assessment showing how phytochemicals in Elderberry can inhibit the flu virus’s entry and replication in human cells, and help strengthen a person’s immune response to the virus” (The Australian Homeopathtic Association, 2019). Elderberry also reduces symptoms and severity of influenza.
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, phytochemicals are naturally occurring plant chemicals. They help stimulate the immune system, block substances we eat, drink, and breathe from becoming carcinogens and prevent DNA damage amongst other health benefits.
The study also proved the direct effects of elderberry extract by “blocking viral glycoproteins, as well as indirect effects by increased expression of certain cytokines, these are secreted by certain cells in the immune system and work together to coordinate a defense against invaders” (The Australian Homeopathetic Association, 2019).
Elderberry was termed “the medicine of the chest” by country people in traditional European medicine. It is said that Elderberry works as the prescribed drug, tamiflu for those who have had the flu. Elderberry reduces flu symptoms and the length of time the flu lasts.
The following is an elderberry recipe beneficial to your health:
3 1/2 cups of water
2/3 cups of ripe elderberries (dried or 1 1/3 cups fresh or frozen)
2 tbsp of grated ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 cup of raw honey (if giving it to an infant less than 12 months, you can use maple syrup as a substitute to honey)
Pour water into a medium sauce pan and add the elderberry, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves
Bring to boil and then cover to reduce a simmer for about 45 minutes to an 1 hour until the liquid has reduced by almost half
Remove from heat and let it cool enough to be handled
Mash the berries carefully using a spoon or flat utensil
Pour through strainer
Discard the elderberries and let the liquid cool down
Add honey or maple syrup and mix
Pour the syrup into a mason jar and store in the fridge
1 tbsp 3 times a day for adults
1 tsp 3 times a day for children
Enjoy!

Yoga Therapy
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here  One may ask, what is yoga? Does it actually provide any health benefits? Today, yoga is known as a popular form of exercise and meditation but in the past, yoga was used to master the mind, control emotions, and grow spiritually (Nichols, 2018).
Yoga originated in Northern India over 5,000 years ago (Burgin, n.d.). One of the oldest types of yoga would be Ashtanga yoga, which uses six established sequences of postures that rapidly link every movement to breath (Nichols, 2018). This is typical of ancient yoga as it focused more on the mental aspect and spiritual energy of the body. Now modern yoga focuses on stretches to help stimulate inner peace and physical energy (Nichols, 2018).
Today, yoga can be used as a holistic approach to improve health, headaches, pain, and prevent sickness. Yoga improves flexibility over time. You might be thinking, how can flexibility benefit me health-wise? Some people have improper alignment of the thigh and shinbone which can lead to knee joint pain. With the tightness of the hamstring, this can stress the lumbar spine causing back pain (McCall, 2017).
So, if you have muscle ache due to tightness in the hips and hamstring, yoga can help relieve your pain as your flexibility increases over time. Not only does your flexibility increase, but since you are using your joint’s full range of motion, you are actually preventing degenerative arthritis. By constantly using your joints, you are keeping your joint cartilage constantly supplied and renewed (McCall, 2017).
Yoga has several breathing techniques that promotes relaxation and positive thinking. Those who practice yoga tend to take fewer breaths of greater volume, improving lung function. Yoga encourages slow breathing, balancing from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system which provides a restorative effect (McCall, 2017). The body is able to relax with calmer breathing, relieving one of stress, inner peace, and an improved cardiovascular and circulatory health system (Economidou, n.d.). Since yoga is interconnected, once you have experienced changes to your breathing, not only does your lung function improve but your entire body and mind will improve as well.  Burgin, T. (n.d.). The Power of Ginger
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here The season is changing, the weather is getting colder, layers of clothing start to increase, this can mean one of many things! During the colder days of the year, a common cold can easily be caught and spread amongst people within the same vicinity. As a substitute for cold medication, ginger can be brewed to make the perfect cup of antidote. It is important to realize that medication isn’t always easily accessible to everybody, especially for individuals who don’t have the support of the healthcare system. Luckily, ginger can be purchased from any local market and prepared to make the perfect remedy. Not only is ginger common and easily attainable, it is the perfect remedy for individuals seeking a more holistic approach rather than the usual prescribed pill or liquid medication from a healthcare provider.      Ginger belongs to the Zingiberaceae family which is a family of flowering plants that is said to have originated from China. Ginger contains gingerol, a compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties responsible for its medicinal properties. Scientific research has revealed that ginger possesses numerous therapeutic properties including “antioxidant effects, an ability to inhibit the formation of inflammatory compounds, and direct anti-inflammatory effects” (WHFoods, 2019).  Ginger can be used to help with any discomfort and sickness. Besides treating a cold, ginger also helps with gastrointestinal distress like digestion, reduces pain and soreness, and relieves nausea. In one study, ginger was shown to have a greater affect in reducing and relieving motion sickness symptoms. Such symptoms include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and cold sweating (WHFoods, 2019). The study compared ginger and dimenhydrinate (dramamine) in the treatment of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, ginger presented similar if not greater effects as dimenhydrinate (dramamine) but with fewer side effects. Dimenhydrinate (dramamine) is an over-the-counter drug that can be purchased and used to treat motion sickness or nausea. For individuals looking for a more holistic approach in nausea relief, ginger is a perfect alternative as it can be less expensive and more effective without having to suffer any side effects.            There are many different ways ginger can be consumed, from dicing it up and eating it raw to slicing and brewing it to drink as if it were tea or soup. The rhizome or the underground part of the stem is called the ginger root and is commonly used as a spice that can be added into food when cooking. Rather than a dried form of ginger spice, fresh ginger is best for consumption due to it having higher levels of gingerol. One way to consume ginger is eating it raw. It is optional to wash ginger but one should peel the tough skin off first before dicing it up or grating the ginger into tiny pieces. Depending on an individual’s preference, one can swallow mouthfuls of ginger or chew on it to break it down. Another way for ginger consumption is to cut up ginger and boil it with water to make ginger tea. Preparation for ginger consumption is extremely easy and can also be an alternative remedy for anyone who may seek it.          Leech, J. (2017, June 4). 11 Proven Health Benefits of Ginger. Biofeedback
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here
Biofeedback Training. Its intention is to improve one’s health by learning to gain voluntary control over processes that were thought to be involuntary with the help of training. Some of these processes include managing heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and temperature (Cherry, 2019). The goal of each session is for an individual to be able to use positive reinforcement outside of the clinical setting on their own.
The training is usually done in a clinical setting where the patient is guided by a therapist. First, sensors will be placed onto the skin which records signals from the body that are then displayed through a monitor. Patients will then be asked to complete a series of activities that would increase their stress level. After that, they will learn how to read their own physiological responses and practice different relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and imagery while keeping track of their own progress on a monitor (Cherry, 2019). From the article “Biofeedback Therapy” (n.d.), some of the relaxation techniques used in the training sessions are deep breathing, muscle relaxation, guided imagery and meditation.
Biofeedback training is rapidly growing in the United States. It does not have any negative side effects like medication does. From the article, “Biofeedback in Medicine,” a table is provided displaying different levels depending on how effective this training is for different medical conditions in which it has helped. The level goes all the way to 5 where all the medical conditions in this level listed is fully supported by many evidence and reviewed over many times. Biofeedback training has been shown to be the most effective in treating  anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), headache, hypertension, constipation, and chronic pain (Frank, Khorshid, Kiffer, Moravec, & McKee, 2010).

Coloring the Mind
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here
How often would you see an adult color? Not many adults use their spare time to color. Coloring is often associated as a children’s activity. Despite the obvious reasons as to why many kids color, this form of art is actually therapeutic for us! Coloring apps for adults, printable coloring papers, and coloring books are becoming more and more popular these days! One of the more popular coloring pages are Mandalas which originated in India. Due to its unique symmetrical, repetitive patterns and representations, these features help oneself experience mindfulness leading to a meditative state (Olesen, 2019).
Many adults experience stress and anxiety throughout their career due to various factors. Coloring pages has been proven to be beneficial for adults to de-stress. Carl Jung was one of the earliest scientists to study the benefits of coloring pages (Olesen, 2019). Mandala’s concentric circles and geometrical patterns has helped patients become calmer and experience less stress. Not only does it reduce stress but it also activates both parts of the cerebral hemisphere and can also spark creativity!
Anxiety is a common mental condition that is often seen in adults. Many symptoms include excessive worrying, headaches, and negative thoughts. Through the act of coloring pages, adults can feel more relaxed. Coloring can help patients reach deep levels of relaxation which also increases the effectiveness of other forms of therapy (Olesen, 2019).
The benefits of coloring are not due to its medical use but it can also brighten a patient’s inner self. Coloring has helped adults re-discover themselves! Many adults feel lost and often stuck in a repetitive routine. Coloring helps adults connect with their inner child. The Inner Child therapy is popular within disturbed adults who tend to be harsh towards themselves. Inner Child healing therapy may help break negative thinking patterns due to the fact that a child is full of innocence and love (Olesen, 2019). This form of therapy can turn a disturbed, negative adult into a confident and radiant person!
From personal experience, coloring is something I enjoy doing on my free time because it helps release stress and enhances creativity. It is like being in your own world without any distraction. There is no right or wrong when it comes to coloring!
Why not try coloring for yourself?

Aromatherapy 101  Do you use essential oils? If you don’t you should start thinking of doing so because there are many health benefits in using essential oils! The use of natural plant extracts, also known as essential oil therapy is a holistic healing treatment and promotes the health and well being of an individual by enhancing both physical and emotional health (Cronkleton, 2018). Aromatherapy has many health benefits and is a term coined by a French chemist and perfumer, Rene Maurice Gattefosse. Aromatherapy can be used for managing pain, soothing sore joints, boosting immunity, fighting bacteria, viruses, fungi, and many more issues. The use of essential oils is therapeutic and helps your mind, body, and spirit.   You can use essential oils by simply applying them directly on your skin or inhaling them. For the inhalation method, you can pour the oil straight into a diffuser mixed with water. Additionally, you can use essential oils by applying drops to your bathing water, moisturizers, clay masks, perfumes, air fresheners, and cleaning your home with them. Essential oils are non-toxic and also kid and pet friendly. Essential oils are very concentrated so just a few drops diluted in water would do the trick.  Essential oils have been used for centuries. “Ancient cultures like China, India, and Egypt used their aromatic compounds to make resin, balms, and oils” (Cronkleton, 2018). There are a variety of essential oils but the most commonly used for its beneficial properties are lavender, peppermint, lemon, tea tree, and eucalyptus.  Lavender has many benefits and is a personal favorite of many. It is anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, an antidepressant, and antiseptic. It gives a sedative effect when used and it can also be used as a preventative treatment. Lavender also helps with relaxation and promotes sleep. Those who have trouble sleeping should try lavender as an essential oil in a diffuser instead of taking sleeping pills to promote better sleep.   So go ahead and try it out! Diffuse yourself into relaxation!

Acupuncture, A Traditional Chinese Medicine
Tumblr media
Image sourced from: here Believe it or not, acupuncture can be used to relieve symptoms of many different diseases, disorders and pain conditions. Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in which acupuncturists insert thin needles in certain areas of the body to restore the flow of qi, balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing and promote relaxation (Wong, 2019).
Acupuncture originated in China, dating several years before the Common Era. Unlike acupuncture today, the earlier age used sharpened stones and bones for these treatments (Mandal, 2019). There were several theories stating that acupuncture moves qi throughout the body along the 12 meridians. These meridians are believed to improve the function of major organs and the body (Mandal, 2019). It works by stimulating the release of endorphins which are chemicals that help relieve pain and stress. Conditions such as depression, headache, body aches, and nausea can benefit from acupuncture. These aren’t the only conditions that can be cured with acupuncture. On the University of California San Diego School of Medicine’s website, there is a whole list of conditions and diseases that had clinical studies done, proving that acupuncture has been an effective treatment (UCSanDiego School of Medicine, n.d.).
Several studies have shown that acupuncture had a noticeable physiological effect relating to anxiety. Stress and anxiety is controlled by the body’s “fight or flight” system. This system can cause shortness of breath as one’s anxiety increases. With acupuncture, the signal that controls the “fight or flight” system is normalized (Booth, 2019). Results can be seen immediately in some patients and is a holistic treatment compared to the usage of antidepressants.
As scary as needles may sound, acupuncturists are trained to insert the sterilized needles properly and the needles are much thinner than the average needle. Upon insertion, you should feel a slight pinch and feel relaxed during and after the treatment. At the end of the session, one should feel refreshed. Acupuncture can take multiple sessions to see results or change depending on treatment type so do not be surprised if you don’t notice any change immediately (Wong, C. 2019).  Booth, S.
